My older Sister Jenny passed away on August 12th from Cancer. She was in her home, surrounded by love ones. The cancer was extremely aggressive and there wasn’t a lot time to prepare. I did an episode a few weeks ago and touched on our last visit. That visit my sister and I played it all out and shared our deep love, recounting the years of laughs, advice and tough conversations. Jenny made me a better man, Husband and Father. She inspired me to find a direction in life, supported my creative endeavors and was a champion of my decisions in life. This was an important episode to me and I had the great opportunity to tell fun stories and talk about my dear sister Jenny. P.S. There were a lot of jokes in there so don’t get sad….. I met Jaden back in the early days of Knife Talk Podcast . He was a young guy starting to learn about knife making and sending us at the podcast a lot of great questions for the show. Over the years we saw him as a growing knife maker, good guy and supporter of the show. A couple of years I saw that he was involved in a horrific car accident that changed his life. My friend Jared Thatcher is the Bladesmith of Boothill Knives, he and his wife Kylee run Three Daughters Farm, Boothill Kitchen and train and raise world class hunting Dogs at TDF Kennels. As if that wasn’t enough, they hold Knife making classes every other weekend and Jared is the Mayor of his town in Kentucky. Kay Foye is an incredible Knifemaker whose direction focuses on the the voice and memories of the objects she uses to create her work. A lot of that direction comes from her experiences ranging from working in the New York fashion industry to being a ranch hand in Colorado. The evolution of her work like many artists is influenced by her surroundings as well as the people she talks to. Her process has led her to finding patrons who give her heirlooms and keepsakes for her to use in knife handles that appear to be a sculptural collage. Contrasting with the impermanence of carbon steel, or even a farriers rasp, these intricately built handles on give the feeling of preserved memories with the expectation of making new memories as the patina develops.
