After last fortnight’s special 5th birthday show, I was back with another cracker of a guest mix for you, from Liverpool-based DJ and producer Ben Jamin. Ben’s had releases on loads of labels including Discography Lessons, Discoholics Anonymous and Hot Digits, and is a real master of the slow mo edit. He’s also a brilliant DJ, and has been kind enough to play some of my slower stuff in his mixes. My little show has turned five! Five years ago, just days before my second child was due to be born, I for some reason decided it was a good time to start a radio show. And so that’s what I did - the show was called Funkier Radio and it wasn’t a real radio show, because I prerecorded it and just put it up on Soundcloud. But now it’s live, on a real radio station and has been renamed Funkier Sounds. Over the years I’ve had some brilliant guests including The Reflex, Michael Gray, Danielle Moore, loads of less known but still brilliant DJs and a whole load of my friends, and for this celebratory episode I brought you another very special guest. My guest was Sam Redmore, a DJ and producer who I’ve loved for a few years now. Someone on the more funk & soul side of the sounds I’m into rather than the house and disco side, Sam was the perfect selector to help me mark the fifth birthday. I started this fortnight’s show with something brand new and unreleased from me, then wobbled around the tempos as usual. Largely kept quiet as I keep getting mic feedback and haven’t been able to sort it out yet. Ended my hour with a nice trio of obscure disco gems up at around 130bpm, in preparation for my guest! I had a nice time during my hour, playing a selection of disco and funk oldies, with a few promos in the second hour. Good to be back in business with my laptop fixed and my setup in its new and improved location - excuse a bit of feedback on the mic as i’m still getting everything just right. Episode 130 nearly didn’t happen - a few days after Episode 129 my mac broke in what seemed like a fairly conclusive manner, and I only just got it fixed in time. Had that not happened I could have played the tunes but would have had no way of broadcasting live, so it would’ve had to be a prerecord. In the end the show was able to go ahead as normal, but without any of the usual promos or new bits as I’ve been fully out of action in that regard. But I had fun delving into the depths of my USB to bring you a nice variety of funky goodness, including some African-flavoured beats from my recent Radio 1001 set, some hip hop and lots of the usual funk forward flavours. Then my guest in hour 2 continued the funky goodness. This one’s all about the guest mix really so I won’t talk too much about my hour, except that I premiered a new edit that I’m quite pleased with and which will be out soon! Anyway, on to that guest mix. Bit of a special one that has been in the works for ages and I wasn’t sure would ever happen… but here it is! It’s my massive honour to bring you an exclusive guest mix from none other than Danielle Moore of Crazy P. Crazy P are one of my absolute favourite acts, and they’ve been doing the business for literally decades now. They’re one of the world’s most in demand disco outfits… although with their unique take on the sound, calling them ‘disco’ is doing them a bit of a disservice. I’ve had the privilege of witnessing them do their thing a couple of times and they put on a hell of a show, led by Danielle’s wonderful voice and stage presence. I was totally trying my luck when I reached out to Danielle on Instagram to ask for a mix, but bless her she replied, she’s absolutely lovely, we’ve been chatting a bit and she sent me this monster of a mix. Full of the sort of deep, low slung, after hours disco that Crazy P are known for, it’s an absolutely impeccable selection, ending on a Crazy P classic. Possibly the biggest guest I’ve had on my show to date, and definitely one of the finest mixes ever to grace my little show. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did!

Episode 126 was another enjoyable one - I had a lovely time in hour one, mixing up all sorts of weirdness. Decided to start slow-ish and build up rather than jump around the BPM, so we go from moody Afro influences up to pumping disco, with a couple of brand spanking new bits from me in there. Quite smooth mixing from me for once, except at one point I hit the wrong button and completely stopped the music… but I don’t think anyone noticed! Hour 2 was bloody good! We were treated to an hour of disco delights from Loughborough-based party starting duo DiscoJam. True to their name, this was a wonderfully put together and expertly mixed journey through disco and nu-disco sounds with a great mix of favourites, lesser-known cuts and a few surprises. Show two of 2024 felt like a good one. This first hour of this episode was about two things - firstly the Discoholics Anonymous 4 compilation, that I’m featuring on alongside a load of amazing producers. I played my track and some of the other, much better tracks on there. The second focus was celebrating the music of the late, great Amp Fiddler, who we sadly lost recently. His tracks have been regulars in my shows and mixes, and I played three of his funkiest in this episode as a little tribute. RIP, you funky soul. My hour in this episode was mostly made up of stuff I’ve recently downloaded. Excuse a couple of technical gremlins in the first bit of this show, happens to the best of us. Anyway, once I got the mic sorted I was up and running with a slightly rebranded show - now called Funkier Sounds. I was all over the place in my bit of the show, covering obscure disco, red hot edits, soulful house, weird funky bits, and since our guest mix this time was only 45 mins I used my extra 15 mins to simmer down with some divine slow jams. I bloody enjoyed this episode! As usual I crammed in a few promos alongside the eclectic mix in hour 1. In a departure from my usual ways, I slowed things right down in the last 15 mins… to make way for my guest this fortnight, J-Felix, who started his guest mix with a generous slab of hip hop. I saw J-Felix DJ earlier this summer at a day festival in Crystal Palace Park which was headlined by Sister Sledge. I really enjoyed listening to his eclectic, funky selections in the sunshine, so decided to invite him on for a guest mix. He’s put together a wonderful mix that would suit a sunny day. It’s mostly hip hop, and that’s just fine with me. But the pace picks up in the second half - still some hip hop flavours, but some boogie funk and the like too. A bit different to many of the guest mixes I’ve had on recently, but all the better for it.
