I kicked off hour 1 with my new (and free) Etta James edit (grab it here - https://soundcloud.com/evenfunkier/night-people), and also dropped a new one from my good friend Pete Ellison (grab that one here - https://www.traxsource.com/track/12760183/get-down-to-james-brown-original-mix) as I darted through the genres with some vintage funk, hip hop, deep and dusty house and a few disco belters to finish. I then handed over to the talented producer, in demand remixer, co-head of Hot Gorilla records and all round top guy Andy Buchan for the guest mix. Episode 142 of Funkier Sounds is dedicated to the memory of Danielle Moore from Crazy P. I played a good few tracks featuring her divine vocals in the first hour, and did my best to put together a set of the sort of deep, sleazy, low-slung disco that Crazy P do so well. For hour 2 it felt like the only right thing to do was to replay the guest mix she did for me earlier this year. I was so thrilled when she finally sent me this mix, and super proud to put it out on my little show. Loads of the songs in it have since made it into my collection - a marker of her impeccable taste, and it’s quite emotional to hear those voice drops she so kindly put in again. Like so many others I’ll really miss her - she’s gone way too soon. In the first hour of this show I played a mixed bag of bits I've downloaded reasonably recently. Still having all sorts of computer issues but I've managed to get them on a USB at least. Nice mix of vibes - some quite chilled and balearic stuff building towards a few soulful house numbers. I didn't manage to get a guest for hour 2, so I thought why don't I do a mix of my own stuff? I started this episode in a bit of a grumpy mood because rekordbox/ Mac issues meant that all of latest downloads that I was so looking forward to playing remained trapped on my Mac and not my USB. But I soon cheered up as I picked out some choice cuts from the 8,000 or so tracks that were on the stick. A mixed bag as always but keeping things more on the disco side of things for a lot of it… …and for good reason, as my guest this time was none other than Tatiana - part of The Disco Express. TDE are one of my favourite labels, and they should be one of your favourite labels too. And Tatiana is an expert selector, who put together a superb mix for your listening pleasure. Tatiana is a London-based DJ, audio producer, and music journalist. Her sound moves smoothly between disco, high-energy italo, and soulful house, all underpinned by funky basslines to keep you moving on the dance floor. She has played the likes of E1, 25 Paul Street, Colour Factory, Night Tales, Oslo Hackney, XOYO, and POW Brixton, and at festivals such as El Dorado, Queen’s Yard Summer Party, Access The Festival, and Brixton Disco Festival, as well as regular gigs in Berlin at venues such as the iconic KitKatClub, Bulbul, Klunkerkranich, and Crack Bellmer. In 2024, she made her Paris debut at Les Bains, and has just returned from playing her first run of gigs in Tokyo in the spring. She is part of the team behind The Disco Express - an East London label & event series renowned for hosting the world’s biggest names in disco. My little show has turned five! Five years ago, just days before my second child was due to be born, I for some reason decided it was a good time to start a radio show. And so that’s what I did - the show was called Funkier Radio and it wasn’t a real radio show, because I prerecorded it and just put it up on Soundcloud. But now it’s live, on a real radio station and has been renamed Funkier Sounds. Over the years I’ve had some brilliant guests including The Reflex, Michael Gray, Danielle Moore, loads of less known but still brilliant DJs and a whole load of my friends, and for this celebratory episode I brought you another very special guest. My guest was Sam Redmore, a DJ and producer who I’ve loved for a few years now. Someone on the more funk & soul side of the sounds I’m into rather than the house and disco side, Sam was the perfect selector to help me mark the fifth birthday. I started this fortnight’s show with something brand new and unreleased from me, then wobbled around the tempos as usual. Largely kept quiet as I keep getting mic feedback and haven’t been able to sort it out yet. Ended my hour with a nice trio of obscure disco gems up at around 130bpm, in preparation for my guest! My guest was Abby Daze, a multi-genre DJ from London. Abby’s mix went in quick and didn’t let up, keeping the energy high and the mixing fast throughout. I had a nice time during my hour, playing a selection of disco and funk oldies, with a few promos in the second hour. Episode 130 nearly didn’t happen - a few days after Episode 129 my mac broke in what seemed like a fairly conclusive manner, and I only just got it fixed in time. Had that not happened I could have played the tunes but would have had no way of broadcasting live, so it would’ve had to be a prerecord. In the end the show was able to go ahead as normal, but without any of the usual promos or new bits as I’ve been fully out of action in that regard. But I had fun delving into the depths of my USB to bring you a nice variety of funky goodness, including some African-flavoured beats from my recent Radio 1001 set, some hip hop and lots of the usual funk forward flavours. Then my guest in hour 2 continued the funky goodness. This one’s all about the guest mix really so I won’t talk too much about my hour, except that I premiered a new edit that I’m quite pleased with and which will be out soon! Anyway, on to that guest mix. Bit of a special one that has been in the works for ages and I wasn’t sure would ever happen… but here it is! It’s my massive honour to bring you an exclusive guest mix from none other than Danielle Moore of Crazy P. Crazy P are one of my absolute favourite acts, and they’ve been doing the business for literally decades now. They’re one of the world’s most in demand disco outfits… although with their unique take on the sound, calling them ‘disco’ is doing them a bit of a disservice. I’ve had the privilege of witnessing them do their thing a couple of times and they put on a hell of a show, led by Danielle’s wonderful voice and stage presence. I was totally trying my luck when I reached out to Danielle on Instagram to ask for a mix, but bless her she replied, she’s absolutely lovely, we’ve been chatting a bit and she sent me this monster of a mix. Full of the sort of deep, low slung, after hours disco that Crazy P are known for, it’s an absolutely impeccable selection, ending on a Crazy P classic. Episode 126 was another enjoyable one - I had a lovely time in hour one, mixing up all sorts of weirdness. Decided to start slow-ish and build up rather than jump around the BPM, so we go from moody Afro influences up to pumping disco, with a couple of brand spanking new bits from me in there. Quite smooth mixing from me for once, except at one point I hit the wrong button and completely stopped the music… but I don’t think anyone noticed! Hour 2 was bloody good! We were treated to an hour of disco delights from Loughborough-based party starting duo DiscoJam. True to their name, this was a wonderfully put together and expertly mixed journey through disco and nu-disco sounds with a great mix of favourites, lesser-known cuts and a few surprises. This first hour of this episode was about two things - firstly the Discoholics Anonymous 4 compilation, that I’m featuring on alongside a load of amazing producers. I played my track and some of the other, much better tracks on there. The second focus was celebrating the music of the late, great Amp Fiddler, who we sadly lost recently. His tracks have been regulars in my shows and mixes, and I played three of his funkiest in this episode as a little tribute. RIP, you funky soul. In hour 2 I handed over to Fray Bentos, a DJ and producer who I’ve been following for a while. He’s released on loads of labels that I’ve been on like Hot Gorilla, Discoholics Anonymous and Hot Digits, and always brings the funky vibes. He’s proved that in style here with an excellent mix - starting slow and moving through the gears very nicely. It’s mostly classic funk vibes, but with a bit of a disco-tastic finish.
