Future Based Podcast

This podcast is part of the Witchcraft made Science series, a collaboration with curator Lieke Wouters. In this podcast, we approach the witch as a stereotype as well as a new feminist icon. Making space for the spiritual, the scientific and the sceptical aspects of witchcraft, all seen from an artistic lens. Špela Petrič is a Ljubljana and Amsterdam based new media artist who has been trained in the natural sciences and holds a PhD in biology, currently working as a post-doc researcher at the Smart Hybrid Forms Lab at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Dr Elselijn Kingma is an Associate Professor in Philosophy at the University of Southampton. Between completing her PhD in Cambridge in 2008 and joining Southampton in 2013, Elselijn held positions at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda (USA); King's College London, and Cambridge. Elselijn's has research interests in philosophy of medicine, philosophy of biology, metaphysics and applied ethics. From 2016 she is Principal Investigator on a five research concerning 'Better Understanding the Metaphysics of Pregnancy'. Elselijn also has a part-time appointment as Socrates Professor in Philosophy and Technology in the Humanist Tradition, at the University of Eindhoven (NL). Before studying Philosophy, Elselijn obtained undergraduate degrees in Clinical Medicine (2004) and Cognitive & Neuro Psychology (2004) at the University of Leiden, the Netherlands. In this first podcast for the Creating Life project, our host Marjolein Pijnappels goes into conversation with Dan Molter. Dan is a naturalist, expert mushroom photographer, and lecturer of philosophy University of Tennessee Knoxville. His research is in scientific metaphysics, with a focus on questions of biological individuality. Rudy van Belkom is a futures researcher at the Netherlands Study Centre for Technology Trends (STT). He recently published his book about ethics in the design process (‘AI no longer has a plug’) that offers developers, policymakers, philosophers and basically anyone with an interest in AI, tools for integrating ethics into the AI design process. The main question of his research is always: what future do we want? We need to ask ourselves what purpose we want to use technology for, rather than seeing it as purpose in itself. How can we use technology to create a better world? And what exactly is a better world? Currently Rudy is focusing on the impact of technology on the future of Democracy. In addition he developed an ethical design game for AI, inspired by the scrum process, that can be used to translate ethical issues into practice. The essence of the game is based on the position paper that he wrote together with the HU research group on AI and was accepted for ECAI 2020: ‘An Agile Framework for Trustworthy AI’. Inverse Surveillance AI is a project of The Asimov Institute, funded by the SIDN Fund. The project is a think tank of scientists, policymakers, and philosophers in order to answer the question, “How can we use AI as a Panopticon to promote beneficial actions for citizens by organizations?” Based on the insights produced from this think tank, a first proof of concept will be developed in a hackathon. The project lasts 6 months and operates from a utopian and solution-oriented approach. The main goal is to deepen the subject of Inverse Surveillance, to explore how AI can make this possible, and sharing all information so that it can function as a launchpad for future research. This podcast series together with Asimov director Stefan Leijnen, we go into conversations with experts in the field of AI technology. The presence and increasing use of surveillance in our daily lives means our awareness and engagement need to be active as much as it is theoretical. During the course of this podcast series, host Abdelrahman Hassan and the The Asimov Institute Director Stefan Leijnen, will go into conversation with experts about the various areas of surveillance. Each episode examines the relationship between algorithms and power structures, how they shape each other and how they shape the governed subject. The most important part of the podcast, is how we can debunk existing power frames in order to create new ones: What rules or concepts can be employed to shift existing power structures? This podcast series aims to find a more unidirectional blueprint for future governance systems, and will be the point of departure of the hackathon in the Summer of 2021, organized by the Inverse Surveillance AI project. Dr. Anton Poikolainen Rosén is a Postdoctoral researcher at Aalto University School of Art, Design and Architecture. His research focuses on sustainable futures in Human-Cumputer Interaction and more-than-human design. He works with ethnographic methods, research through design, co-design, and speculative design.   Dr Catherine Oliver is a geographer and researcher currently working with urban chickens and keepers in London at the Department of Geography, University of Cambridge.     Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas is Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Animal-Computer Interaction at The University of Glasgow in Scotland (UK). Her research explores how animals interact with computer systems and how to designing and build methods to capture this interaction. Klaas Kuitenbrouwer studied history at the University of Utrecht, developed an art practice that moved into the field of digital culture. Viraj Joshi is a designer, technologist, and futurist based in London. He designd curious objects and fiction with great affinity towards our technological and social futures.
