Description

Welcome to Future Bound, a Podcast by Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC). As the world leader in combination carriers, KCC owns and operates eight CABU and eight CLEANBU combination carriers with three CABU vessels under construction for delivery in 2026. KCC’s combination carriers are built for transportation of both wet and dry bulk cargoes, being operated in trades where the vessels efficiently combine dry and wet cargoes with minimum ballast. Through their high utilization and efficiency, the vessels emit up to 40% less CO2 per transported ton compared to standard tanker and dry bulk vessels in current and targeted combination trading patterns.

The podcast will bring you episodes from the KCC team responsible for commercial, technical, and all day-to-day operations. We’ll from others in the Klaveness organization specializing in market analysis, decarbonization, and we’ll bring you discussions with industry peers and other external guests we interview along the way.

Hull coatings are no longer just about protection. They have become an important lever for fuel efficiency, emissions reduction, and limiting shipping’s impact on the marine environment. In this episode of Future Bound, learn how coating technology has evolved to meet rising demands on performance, sustainability, and asset longevity. Drawing on a long-standing collaboration between Hempel and Klaveness, the conversation explores how silicone-based coatings, such as Hempaguard, move from lab to vessel, and what it takes to scale them in a conservative industry. Together, they explore how owners and suppliers work together to test and validate performance at sea, why total cost of ownership matters more than upfront cost, and how environmental considerations, from fuel efficiency to biodiversity, are reshaping coating design and application. Discussion points include: Why hull coatings matter more than ever for fuel efficiency, emissions reduction, and long-term asset performance. How to balance energy efficiency with environmental impact, including biocides, microplastics, and biodiversity considerations. What it takes to introduce new coating technologies in a conservative industry, from shipyards to regulators. How collaboration with KCC goes beyond hull coatings, addressing the unique demands of specialized cargo holds carrying both wet and dry cargoes. How data, AI, and new application technologies are changing the way coatings are developed, tested, and applied. What coating innovation means for KCC’s strategy: long-term ownership, specialized vessels, and operating an efficient fleet over decades.

As climate regulation continues to evolve, the spotlight often falls on shipowners to deliver on emission reductions. But what about the cargo owners? In this episode of Future Bound, KCC’s Head of Decarbonization, Peter Rayers, sits down with Ingrid Kylstad, Managing Director of Klaveness Digital, to unpack the evolving role of cargo owners in the push for greener shipping. Together, they explore whether cargo owners are still in the driver’s seat when it comes to cutting emissions, and how they can influence real outcomes across the supply chain. The conversation covers how business model innovation, data-driven decision-making, and tools like the Sea Cargo Charter and KCC’s carbon-adjusted freight (CAF) setup are re-thinking commercial relationships between owners and charterers. Discussion points include: Why scope 3 emissions still matter — and how cargo owners are acting on them How carbon tracking and reporting are entering commercial decision-making The importance of data quality and transparency for new business models How initiatives like KCC’s carbon-adjusted freight (CAF) setup and the Sea Cargo Charter are shaping owner-charterer collaboration
The IMO’s draft Net-Zero Framework, developed at MEPC 83, marked a major step forward in maritime climate regulation. But is it enough to put shipping on track for reaching net-zero, and will it pass the final hurdle at IMO’s extraordinary session in October 2025? In this episode, KCC’s Head of Decarbonization Peter Rayers sits down with Helene Tofte, Executive Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Climate at the Norwegian Shipowner’s Association. Together, they dig into what still needs to happen before the framework is adopted in October, and how its design could impact the way shipping companies plan, invest, and operate in the years ahead. Discussion points: Will the Net Zero Framework be adopted in October? Which parts of the regulation still need to be clarified or developed: such as biofuels treatment, compliance rules, and pricing/rewards? How might the regulation evolve over the 2030s, progressively or regressively, and how should the industry plan around that uncertainty? What does the NZF mean for KCC’s strategy: supporting energy efficiency, future fuels, and the value of our vessel concept? Helene Tofte is the Executive Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Climate. She has the overarching responsibility for the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association’s international engagement and climate activities, with special focus on monitoring international climate processes and our participation in the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS).
In this episode of Future Bound, we’re turning our focus to the heart of our operations - our seafarers. Our unique vessels transport both dry bulk and liquid cargo, requiring highly skilled crews with deep operational knowledge across both segments. Joining us in the studio to discuss this were Captain Adrian Dima and Captain Lupsor Cornel, two seasoned seafarers with a combined history sailing on nine of our vessels. At the time of recording they were due to take command of MV Bass and MV Barramundi but before setting sail, they sat down with Future Bound for a candid discussion on what it’s like to sail with KCC. Together, they dive into the realities of life at sea aboard combination carriers, the challenges and rewards of managing dual-segment operations, and how technological innovation is reshaping the onboard experience. Central to the discussion is a topic we’re particularly proud of: our 90% seafarer retention rate. In an industry where turnover is common, this number speaks volumes and the episode explores what drives long-term commitment, the impact of career development and company culture, and what truly makes a difference in crew welfare and retention.

Host: Jean Sissener Project Developer, Klaveness Combination Carriers Guest: Ingrid Kylstad Sustainability Lead, ZeroLab by Klaveness “A big enough number to start conversations” The European Union Emissions Trading System, better known as the EU ETS, is the EU’s market mechanism that applies a price to CO2 and creates incentives to reduce emissions. Established in 2005, the goal has been to reduce emissions in energy-intensive industries and from 2024, it will include emissions from shipping. Under the scheme, all cargo vessels and passenger ships over 5,000 DWT sailing to or from EU ports, will have to surrender their emissions allowance as follows: 40% of their verified emissions in 2024 70% of their verified emissions in 2025 100% of verified emissions from 2026 onwards This will include 100% of the emissions from intra-European routes and from vessels berthing within the EU, as well as 50% of extra-European routes to and from a port within the EU. With the clock ticking, questions still linger over preparations, how the costs will be allocated, and how much the scheme will incentivize the industry. To answer these questions, Jean Sissener quizzes decarbonization guru Ingrid Kylstad of ZeroLab, with Kylstad then switching roles to probe Sissener on what steps KCC has taken for their own preparations. Discussion points include: What is the EU ETS and the background for shipping to be included How the mechanics of surrendering emissions allowances will work The current (and possible) cost of the EU ETS, and how customers may prefer to deal with it KCC’s ongoing preparations How KCC is ‘self-regulating’ with a carbon shadow pricing mechanism to its decision-making, and how its carbon adjusted freight (CAF) mechanism established with South32 works About Kylstad: As Sustainability Lead for ZeroLab by Klaveness, Kylstad is an inquisitive, inter-disciplinary professional who thrives at the intersection of business, politics, and society. With professional experience spanning EU public affairs (maritime, competition, climate, energy) and startup investments, Kylstad is passionate about turning sustainability into a business opportunity and enjoys working with people with a "can do"-attitude.
Host: Liv Dyrnes, CFO, Klaveness Combination Carriers Guest: Anders Mjølsnes Sørheim Sustainability and CO2 Performance Manager, Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC) / Klaveness Ship Management (KSM) “Sail in ballast all year if you want to" As stated by IMO to incentivize reducing the carbon intensity of vessels by 40% by 2030 compared to 2008 baseline: “Ships are required to calculate two ratings: their attained Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) to determine their energy efficiency, and their annual operational Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and associated CII rating. With requirements for EEXI and CII certification coming into play from January 1st 2023 and the first annual reporting to be completed in 2023, CFO Liv Dyrnes sits down with Sustainability and CO2 Performance Manager Anders Sørheim to discuss why KCC is not directly impacted by IMO’s EEXI and CII regulations - and why the AER is not a measure incentivizing the industry to reduce emissions.   Discussion points include: The EEXI and CII regulations explained The flaws of much-debated CII Meeting the expectations set out by IMO What the regulations means for KCC’s CABU and CLEANBU vessels Implications and expectations for the wider industry About Sørheim: Sustainability and CO2 Performance Manager with KSM, working directly with KCC on topics such as energy efficiency, decarbonization initiatives and regulatory environmental compliance.
