In this episode of FutureX, Martin and Oliver speak to architect, academic, environmental activist and author of ‘The Re-Use Atlas: a designer’s guide towards a circular economy’; Duncan Baker-Brown.
Duncan has been a huge supporter of Ecobuild/ Futurebuild for many years. He built the Waste Totem back in 2013 and has curated several Waste Zones there too.
Duncan has practised, researched, and taught around issues of sustainable development and closed-looped systems for more than 25 years. He recently founded BakerBrown, a research-led architectural practice and consultancy, created to address the huge demands presented by the climate and ecological emergency as well as the challenges of designing in a post-COVID world.
Over the years Duncan’s practices (and academic ‘live’ projects) have won numerous accolades including RIBA National Awards and a special award from The Stephen Lawrence Prize for the Brighton Waste House - the prize money has since been used to set up a student prize for circular, closed loop design at the University of Brighton where Duncan teaches.
Listen to this inspiring podcast to hear how we can develop circular construction and circularity within our sector; how we should start testing in situ on construction projects, so the industry can accelerate the adoption of waste streams in newbuilds. You can also hear Duncan’s insights and takeaways from COP27 where he visited as part of RIBA’s delegation.
Finally, there's some chat around using duvets as wall insulation and how to reuse plastic toothbrushes that you don't want to miss…
You can also catch Duncan on the Futurebuild 2023 seminar programme in March. Register today and secure your place at this masterclass session.

In this episode of FutureX, Martin and Oliver speak to sustainable pioneer Professor Tom Woolley. Tom has always had a passion for tackling environmental issues after doing a lot of work with community groups.
In the 90’s he produced the “Green Building Handbook” which originally had funding from the Department of the Environment. Feeling later that the Green Building Handbook was a little negative in terms of its critique of conventional materials, he set about researching natural building materials and produced many other books such as; Natural Building: A Guide to Materials and Techniques, Hemp Lime Construction, as well as his latest book; Low Impact Building: Housing using Renewable Materials.
Listen to hear all about Tom’s journey through sustainable construction and learn about healthy and natural building materials such as hempcrete and the benefits of these materials.

Listen to the conversation to hear Joe’s incredible journey through sustainable construction. From studying architecture, practicing architecture and co-founding architect activist group; the Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN). Joe’s work at ACAN led him to his role of UK Networks Lead at Built by Nature and also teaching a programme on the theme of bio-based materials, back where he studied at Oxford Brookes University School of Architecture.
Joe talks through the amazing work happening in the nature-based solutions space as well as the challenges around fire safety and combustibility.

The cement industry produces 8% of all human CO2 emissions, that's almost 3 billion tonnes per year. Seratech can reduce this to zero. Listen to this episode to find out how.
Martin and Oliver speak to Dr Mike Cook, Barney Shanks and Sam Draper from Seratech on all things concrete and their passion and love for creating a truly net zero concrete is inspiring.
Seratech's aim is to ensure we can continue to build new homes, cities and resilient infrastructure so people can flourish but without impacting our environment. They have developed a unique process that delivers efficient, low-cost carbon capture and provides a product that is essential to support future low-carbon construction. This has the potential to reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere and to support construction to go green.
Visit Seratech at London Design Festival later this month, you can register here.

Carrying on the FutureX theme of talking to net-zero pioneers and ahead of COP26, Oliver and Martin spoke to Munish Datta, on his thoughts around the pathway to net zero.
Munish is a fellow at the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership and formerly led Marks & Spencers' globally-renowned sustainability strategy (Plan A) across its extensive property portfolio and is now director of the UK Green Building Council.
Since their conversation, the UKGBC has launched first ever UK Roadmap for achieving Net Zero carbon built environment by 2050 at this week's COP26.
The Roadmap quantifies, for the first time, the specific emission reductions across sub-sectors of the built environment that will need to take place year-on-year to meet the 2050 deadline. The analysis includes not only domestic emissions, but emissions related to the consumption of imported construction products and materials. The Roadmap establishes a net zero emissions budget and trajectory to 2050, consistent with wider UK carbon targets and budgets as set-out by the Climate Change Committee (CCC), enabling government and the UK built environment to benchmark progress over the coming years and decades.
