Some recommendations for Amanda, who's visiting NYC in June -- Rules of Civility by Amor Towles. It's set in 1938 and depicts a year in the life of a young woman. I think it captures the anything-can-happen feel of NYC. The main character has Russian roots, so you can go to the Russian baths as a book related activity. One I want to read (and plan a trip around) is Storied Bars of New York by Delia Cabe. She tells the stories of famous NY cocktail bars, and the writers who frequent them. Honorary mention - The Alienist by Caleb Carr - set in NYC in the early 1900s, it's like if Silence of the Lambs was set during the Industrial Revolution. I JUST saw that it's also a series on TNT.
