Prepare to be transported to a musical realm where the timeless melodies of 'Respect Yourself' by Otis Redding and the captivating ballad 'Push Me Away,' originally penned by Michael and Randy Jackson and recorded by The Jacksons, find a captivating new life. In this new episode, we journey into the world of 'Bossa Nova Noites Bahia Nights,' an album that seamlessly blends the vibrant rhythms of Brazil with the soul-stirring sounds of iconic American songwriters. We'll uncover the creative process behind this unique project, featuring an interview with producer Robert Hėbert, who masterfully guides two emerging Brazilian singers, Mari Bodas and Monique Ellen, on this captivating musical adventure. What are the three key elements Robert emphasizes in his production process? “The Brazilian meter, rhythmic meter is different than the American rhythmic meter. And as someone who's outside of this culture, I'm an American from Chicago producing in Brazil with Brazilian musicians, the last thing that I should do…is impose their meter sense of rhythm on Brazilian musicians.” – Robert Hėbert Robert's passion for music and dedication to authenticity shine through in his production, resulting in an album that is both innovative and respectful of its influences. Let's ginga!

According to Alexa, Shakira has been in a relationship with Gerard Piqué since 2010. But if you listen to her newest release, you won't think so. Apparently, salty post-breakup tracks are the stuff big hits are made of. The song not only not only drops Piqué’s name, but also that of his supposed paramour — and on top of that, goes into minute details. As of the release of this podcast, the video reached 157,891,318 views on YouTube. Believe it or not, Shakira gets even more heated during the third verse. “I wish you the best with my supposed replacement,” she tells her ex, before appearing to reference Piqué and Marti’s age gap again. “I'm worth two 22's/ You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo/ You traded a Rolex for a Casio/ You're going fast, slow down.” But we got some fun new songs on our show! Plus, Sebastian is back from his Holidays in the Dominican Republic. We have December 2022 releases as we hear echoes of the 2023 Carnaval approaching. The program features music by the artists that made my 2022 so special with appearances in my show and live performances in the Bay Area! It's going to be a fun hour as we reflect on how each artist made us feel! I remember being blown away by Venezuela's Nella at the Bing Studio. No wonder she is Latin Grammy winner! How about the crazy and fun time with Ozomatli at the Guild Theater? Brazil's Marisa Monte showered us with memories as she played music from her classic repertoire and the long-waited new album, Portas. Small Island Big Song beautiful performance at Bing Auditorium reminded us how important it is to take care of our planet and to preserve our culture. Pink Martini's night under the stars with the symphony at Frost Amphitheater was unforgettable! The show ended with their fabulous interpretation of the song "Brazil." There wasn't one person standing in that crowd! How about Lila Downs? OMG! What an honor to interview this amazing woman/artist/activist who has blessed the world with her captivating voice? She can inspire our senses singing about mole and mezcal and we are right there, dancing next to her like there is no tomorrow! Earlier in the year, Brazil's Monobloco had everybody feeling like Rio's Carnaval had just arrived in San Francisco in July! I never thought I would say this, but they played longer than my dance endurance! How about Bomba Estereo? More than two hours of music under the bright night sky in Berkeley prior to performing at the Latin Grammys. They were nominated for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Alternative Music and Best Alternative Song. They are winners in my book! For the third consecutive year, Michael Franti is my most played artist according to Spotify's Wrapped! As such, my year would not be complete without a live Franti performance! In 2022, he came back to one of my most recommended music venues, the Mountain Winery in Saratoga! It is always one of the most uplifting shows. The man is like Bob Marley - it's impossible not to want to be a better person when you experience the Franti music boost! Aloha! Hawaii came to Stanford! Thanks to Stanford Live, we had the Holo Holo Festival with the headliner, Kolohe Kai! Finally, we got to hear Sergio Mendes who had everybody dancing to "Mais Que Nada" at the fabulous venue, Yoshi's in Oakland. Some of our listeners got to attend the sold out show and guess what? We met the legend! To close out the season, we welcomed Okaidja Afroso to the Bing Auditorium to hear Jaku Humor, a well-grounded story of the beautiful and ancient fishing culture of the coastal Gãdangmé natives of Ghana. His angelic voice will uplift your spirit with the song, Luna. Life Has Been Good - Dirty Heads Enjoy Every Second - Michael Franti Mais Amor - Seu Cuca Sunsets - Ozomatli Blame it on the Waves - Kolohe Kai A Lingua dos Animais - Marisa Monte Ahí - Nella Ka Va'ai Mai Koe - Small Island Big Song Carinito - LIla Downs La Cumbia del Mole - Lila Downs Auld Lang Syne - Pink Martini Samba do Arere - Monobloco Samba da Bencao - Sergio Mendes Luna - Okaidja Afroso Wesley - Bontan Yalele
There are three powerhouse women on the show today. Three-time Grammy Award winner, Angélique Kidjo, is one of the greatest artists in international music today, a creative force with thirteen albums to her name At home, in Paris, in her new home studio, she recorded her 15th album, Mother Nature, currently nominated for the 2022 Grammy. The album’s central focus is the global environmental crisis, and the album’s title track already has the feel of a classic. After listening, some of you might conclude that this album is packed with socially charged messages. It’s impossible to not hear the call for action. Can socially or politically charged music sell? Angelique thinks that “it's about selling the story. Our human story. Everything is not beautiful. Nobody wakes up every day and everything is fine. You wake-up, you say, I'm OK. But you can't be OK every day. It is impossible. Then you are not a human being. I mean, look at Bob Marley. Bob Marley sold millions of albums. And all of his songs were packed with political messages.” One of the tracks on the album is a new collaboration with Burna Boy - Do it Yourself. According to Kidjo, “you got to do yourself. This is real Africa. Don't mess up with us. Because if we Africans let things scatter, everything breaks. We have got to fix Africa. It's our home, our country, our continent, everything. We have to do it ourselves, do it yourself. Don't wait for somebody to come help you build your own house.” “Mother Nature,” released in 2021, showcases a new generation of African talent, with contributions from the Nigerian pop giants Burna Boy and Mr. Eazi, the Zambian rapper Sampa the Great and more. some writing help from her daughter, Naima. Time Magazine has named Angélique Kidjo to their list of 100 Most Influential People of 2021. “The grace she exudes toward her fellow creators, and to humankind, is a reflection of her vibrancy, kindness, and generosity. Angélique is as real as they come.”— ALICIA KEY I added a Brazilian powerhouse to this episode. Elza Soares, 91, who pushed the boundaries of Brazilian music. In 2016, her “A Mulher do Fim do Mundo” (“The Woman at the End of the World”) won a Latin Grammy for best Brazilian popular music album. She died on January 20th, 2022. Lastly, I am featuring a couple of songs from Couleur, Dobet Gnahoré’s sixth album. Couleur has all the fearlessness and energy of a first album but in fact marks the rejuvenated spirit of a returning warrior. Ready? Set? Hit play!
Ready to have some fun? In today's episode, I'd like to introduce you to two major Latin male artists: Camilo and Juanes. Both are from Medellin, Colombia. It's Island Night on Global Ginga! There is an "island" element in today's episode that I hope will leave you mesmerized. To our local listeners, the best part is that you can watch these artists live here on our Stanford campus! Small Island Big Song is a music, film, live project featuring over a hundred musicians across 16 island nations of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, creating a contemporary and relevant musical statement of a region in the frontline of cultural and environmental challenges. The album & film were composed, recorded, shot and overdubbed in nature, on the artists' custodial land. The 2022 tour shares their new album "Our Island!" Drawing on a roster of respected first nation islander artists, the concert features musicians performing irresistible oceanic grooves to soulful island ballads. Combining music, spoken word and live cinema with AV projections featuring footage collected during a 3-year film trip across 16 countries guided by the artists on their homelands. They will be here on Feb 9th! Nella is a new voice hailing from the island of Margarita in Venezuela. She graduated from Berklee College of Music to immediately become the winner of the 2019 Latin GRAMMY® Award for Best New Artist. That same year, her full-length debut, Voy (I Go) written and produced by Javier Limón for Casa Limón Records, received acclaim from NPR and yielded the hit “Me Llaman Nella” (They Call Me Nella) which surpassed 1.4 million Spotify streams and 1.4 million views on YouTube. In addition, the title track was named the 14th best song of 2019, in any genre, by the New York Times. Nella’s music is a meeting place for the folklore roots of her native Venezuela, contemporary influences, and the music of Andalusia, Spain. At the beginning of 2020 Nella signed with Sony Music Records and released her new album “Doce Margaritas” on 2021 which you can hear on today's episode of Global Ginga. You will also hear "Me Llaman Nella," her signature hit, "Volaré," her 2022 release with Pedro Capo, plus a couple of songs more from her Voce Margaritas album and the single, Mi Guitarra, a sweet bolero with Juan Luis Guerra. I finish off with an album by World renowned BBC Radio 1 DJ Gilles Peterson, Gilles Peterson, on Far Out Recordings, released initially on vinyl in 2009. A bit of jazz, funk, soul and electronic. World renowned BBC Radio 1 DJ Gilles Peterson compiles a spectacular collage mix tape from the vaults of Far Out Recordings for this fifteenth anniversary celebration. A close friend to Joe Davis for 25 years, Gilles Peterson has been a constant supporter of the original and best UK based Brazilian record label. The pair released the original ‘Brazilika’ compilation on Gilles’ Talking Loud label 15 years ago and now go full circle with the fourth installment in Far Out’s series following block party mixes from Kenny Dope, 4 Hero and Andy Votel. Brazilian music aficionados Peterson and Davis introduced a new generation to the cream of Brazil’s bossa and post-bossa artists and here expertly blend the timeless with the new breed from Far Out’s vast catalogue. Gilles Peterson’s ‘Brazilika’ includes five exclusive unreleased tracks and is the definitive collection of Far Out’s work, taking us on a breathless ride through a beautiful and barmy Brazil. Stretch the circle wider! There are many music genres and artists coming to Stanford from all corners of the world!

What do Doubt Gnahoré, Idan Raichel and Novalima have in common? They are all artists working with Cumbancha, one of the most prominent world music labels. On today's episode, I speak with Jacob Edgar, founder of Cumbancha. Edgar is an ethnomusicologist and world music producer. His trajectory took him to work at record label Putumayo World Music before deciding to start his own label. Edgar was moved by the talent he found around the world and frustrated that Putumayo only produced compilations. In 2006, with the support of Dan Storper, Putumayo's founder, Cumbancha was founded. The first name on the roster? Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Local, from Los Angeles. Fast forward to 2021, Cumbancha launched many new albums for artists such as Dobet Gnahoré, Sangit, Kolonien and Havana Meets Kingston. But who is listening to these artists? Edgar says that the world has millions of people who overcome language barriers to make connection with artists and music from different parts. "My experience at Putumayo has taught me that international music is much more popular than is generally recognized. People from all generations and backgrounds are looking for music with roots in cultural traditions, even if that music isn't as visible as it should be in the mainstream media." If that is true, why isn't mainstream media in the United States giving sufficient coverage to these artists and their tours? Tune in and embark on this conversation about the current challenges and celebrations of world music presenters. If you are a musician, Edgar talks about his vetting process for bringing on new artists. If you are a job seeker with a passion for the music industry, listen to the struggles and wins of a successful music entrepreneur whose career also involved television. Hey there, party people! If you were in San Diego on September 2nd, you probably felt the rhythm of samba pulsating through the air, the scent of Brazilian street food wafting around, and the joyful laughter of a community coming together. This year, there was a special guest – Global Ginga - interviewing the stars of the day! Click play and listen to the music and chats that made the day memorable. I had the privilege of catching up with some of the festival's brightest stars. First up, we had a chat with **Saulo**, the headlining act, who couldn't hide his excitement about the festival. According to him, he doesn’t have an international career. Well, I had news for Saulo! His career is definitely international now! He says he is a “matador de saudade,” which is symbolic for being the person who helps transport thousands of people to the thumping streets of Brazil during Carnaval. Saulo had everyone dancing and jumping! Next, I got to spend some time with the dazzling **Karen Kardasha**, a queen who commands the stage like no other! Karen gives relationship advice in her busy social media life, but at the festival, she got into the singing and dancing, and expressed appreciation for all the attendees who are shining a light on Brazilian culture. We also had the pleasure of meeting the charming **Flor Jorge**, the daughter of Seu Jorge, whose enchanting voice and vivacious spirit capture the essence of Brazil. I think we made history together. This was Flor Jorge’s debut outside of Los Angeles! Can’t wait to see what where her young career will lead! And let's not forget the electrifying **Grupo Resenha**, whose lively rhythms keeps the crowd dancing to samba beats! I had to dig a little deep to understand their beef about Los Angeles. Listen to find out why these two cities can also be at each others throats. I am also thankful for spending time with Marquinho Cavaquinho, an American who fell in love with Brazilian music and the Portuguese language decades ago. Today, he represents Brazilian music at its best!
