Call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show!  My guest is Dave Bone, CEO of San Diego Flooring Pros. Dave is a third-generation flooring pro. For years he worked in his family business in his home town, then for other companies in San Diego, and finally decided to go into business himself.  He knew everything there was to know about selling and installing flooring but needed support in setting up a solo business. In the interview, he discusses the key planks of his success in creating a nimble, lean, and successful company that provides hands-on, personal, custom service to clients: He worked with a super business attorney (hey, hey!) who says: “The number one thing that any business needs to do, especially when they're starting out, is to make sure that they're starting on a solid legal foundation.” Critical first step: He incorporated his business, which (A) protects his assets, and (B) qualified him for Covid stimulus money. He put together a team of experts: business attorney, CPA, marketer, and business coach Kathy Nelson, who was featured in episode 33 of this podcast. Another key piece of the puzzle is the software he uses to organize everything from his initial contact leads to purchase orders and bookkeeping. Listen to the whole interview to learn more about going into business for yourself — with the right kind of professional help. Call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show!  Many small business owners are great with ideas and execution for the products or services they provide, but maybe not so expert on the equally important financial and operational sides of things. That’s because managing a business is complex, and usually requires a separate mindset and skillset from the core business. It’s easy for busy people to get lost in the weeds, and lose sight of — or never even envision — the big picture. That’s where Jessica Hornbeck comes in. Her company, Big Picture Results, provides outsourced CFO, and COO services that enable small businesses to deploy best practices that increase efficiency, profitability, and sustainability.  Best practices start with tight bookkeeping, which provides a platform for addressing different aspects of financial management that could result in growth by capitalization through small business loans or soliciting investors. Hornbeck’s services also include valuation, in case an offer to sell comes along, as well as strategies for weathering the rainy day storms of the COVID era. Her company’s website, bigpicresults.com is a font of timely and relevant information.  Listeners will take inspiration, as the Queen did, from Hornbeck’s own bootstraps story, and gain confidence from her background working for major financial institutions.  Also, if you already haven’t, get your FREE copy of my eBook Go Legal Yourself when you get my Go Legal Yourself app from your Apple App Store or Android App Store. Call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show!  My guest is Joe Molina, an ex-military man who’s the founder and Executive Director of the Veterans Chamber of Commerce.  Joe’s advocates “servant leadership,” an approach to citizenship that applies both to the volunteer military and civilian life.  His clientele includes vets, active duty military, and family members The Chamber’s mission includes several core agendas: Helping veterans start their own businesses, get jobs, find affordable housing, education, and training — and get free legal advice (from the Queen herself!). Originally based in the San Diego area, the Chamber now has several outposts nationally.  A key component of the strategy is to facilitate opportunities between military bases and local communities. They also work with municipalities and nonprofit organizations — and all the services are provided for free.  Donations are most definitely welcome! Contact the Chamber through their website. Call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show!  My guest is Jesse Morgan, an inventor, and manufacturer who helps other inventors take their ideas to market. After a near-fatal car accident, Jesse invented The Extractor Tool, for cutting yourself free of a seatbelt and smashing open the car window.   He also invented the Ortho-O-Grip, which goes around the handle of everyday utensils and tools to make them easier to grip for those who have arthritis or other conditions that make it hard to handle things. Morgan also makes and sells products he licenses from other inventors, and he’s generous with mentoring advice for how to take ideas from the drawing board to production to sales.  The big takeaway for inventors: He strongly recommends licensing your product rather than incurring the expenses associated with making and marketing it yourself.  Get your copy of the Go Legal Yourself eBook FREE when you get the APP from your APP Store and also get my latest book “Go Own Yourself” which is available on Amazon from this link. We’ll answer it on the show!  Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Alexandra Renee Poelstra, the CEO at ALL MAVEN, a full-service branding and digital marketing agency. You’re probably asking yourself, “what’s a maven?” Alex tells her story and how she became known as “the maven.” Like many young people starting out in life, attending many schools and programs to advance herself in her profession, the one thing that kept her going she says was and is her “faith.” Alex talks about the struggles she’s had in starting her business. Alex says, being a monster-preneur and at the end of the day, her number one challenge is staying focused on one thing. She says her number two challenge is not get distracted and... not buy into everything people are pitching. She says don’t spend your time around people that aren’t giving you “wise counsel.” And I agree. Alex is also known as the “crazy boss-lady.” She tells us why. Hint: it’s a creative thing. Alex shows us “how” a business stands out among the rest. Without marketing, it’s impossible. What she excels at is branding, and partially for this episode, that’s why this episode is a must-listen. Alex says you can be successful without branding, but without it, for the long-term, there will be struggles along the way. Branding is what sets a business apart from the rest. More on branding. Alex says your website is a critical piece. Why? Because it’s important to develop and use your website to tell your brand story and message. ALL MAVEN services and the branding assets they create: Web design  Logo design Email marketing Social Media marketing Event marketing Video marketing and so much more They don’t do pay-for-click themselves but work directly with two really good companies to serve their clients. Call the show at 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show!  Today I’m talking with Bhavin Mehta, the CEO and Founder of Fusion Factor Corporation, which specializes in helping small businesses become successful by leaving them to focus on their work and business while Fusion Factor focuses on solving their IT (information technology) problems. The three challenges facing Bhavin when he started his business, not uncommon for most entrepreneurs starting out: Acquiring new clients Having the right agreements and contracts in place Executing his marketing We discuss the importance of having the right contracts and agreements in place to protect yourself from litigation and lawsuits. Bhavin reached his first milestone when he hired his first employee, requiring him to put in place the right legal documents, employee manuals, etc.  About marketing when starting your business, Bhavin advises us to be on the internet, social media, and practice good SEO (search engine optimization) on your website. Also beneficial are to have testimonials, and for a business like his, be physically centralized to easily gain access to your clients.  Bhavin’s guide “What Every Business Owner Must Know About Hiring An Honest, Competent, Responsive and Fairly Priced Computer Consultant” is freely available on his website FusionFactor.com. Finally, I ask Bhavin… knowing what you now know, what would you do differently? Not surprisingly, he answers “I’d get my solid contracts in place early, and hire an attorney to understand the legality of what I can and cannot do.” Get your copy of the Go Legal Yourself eBook FREE when you get the APP from your APP Store and also get my latest book “Go Own Yourself” which is available on Amazon from this link. Call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show!  Today I have the pleasure of talking with Sophia Felix, the Founder of HBM Talent & Management. Sophia tells us why she took the path of entrepreneurship in the Talent Management Industry and as a self-made woman how she was able to build her reputation and business. At 19 Sophia worked at the Department Of Defense and was in charge of managing multimillion-dollar contracts where she learned most of her business skills and went on to have 5 mentorships in her career. I asked Sophia “How do you get recognized?”When I’m looking for talent, I look for: their energy; their ambition; and their heart. It’s also how you present yourself. I’m professional at all times. If I’m in a business meeting, I always dress professionally, which helps me to stand out and show people who I am, and they’ll remember me. I’m also a woman of my word. I have faith in my clients and what I do.  I look for those people that have that energy and charisma. I can make them look good and brand them, but if they don’t have that ambition, that heart, it’s a waste of time. Sophia walks us through an example of how she might help a clothing company and gives us advice on entering into the marketing world - and the importance of self-care. I quote myself here by saying, “Why blend in when you were born to ‘stand out’.” Sophia takes her clients through several “game-changing” exercises to help them “dream big” no matter how big their dream is. As usual with all my guests, I asked Sophia, what she now knows, what would she do differently when she was just starting out. Her answer may NOT surprise you. Sophia loves to create opportunities with her business to help others - especially for charities and children in need. With this, she steps up in her community to make a difference.  Some of Sophia’s Charities Southern California’s Chapter President of America's Children of Fallen Heros. Co-founder and President for the International Cannabis Business Women’s Association.  Get your copy of the Go Legal Yourself eBook FREE when you get the APP from your APP Store and also get my latest book “Go Own Yourself” which is available on Amazon from this link. Call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show!  I’m so pleased to spend time today with Angie Rupert from Rupert Law Group. Angie’s specialty is as an E-2 Investor Visa Attorney. The E-2 Visa program is for entrepreneurs all over the world that want to start a business here in the United States. E-2 stands for a statute in immigration law. It can be found here under E-2 Treaty Investors. Angie has combined her legal background, her love of entrepreneurship with business development to make it a perfect fit for herself and her clients. Angie shares with us how she helps international or potential international clients gain a US presence. These are the first things you need to figure out: What business do you want to start or buy? Where do you want to open or buy this business? How are you going to invest in this business? After you know those things, it’s now time to call a lawyer and walk-through how you’re going to get this idea off into a business. This is the process of getting the E2: getting it near operational before you go get the Visa. If the processes go smoothly, it can take about 3 to 4 months. Some clients can move more quickly. Some it can take longer up to a year. It depends on how quickly the client moves. Once Angie gets the documents together, it takes her about 2-weeks to put the filing together, at which point she then sends them off to the consultant at the country of the client’s origin. The consultant may then take from 4 to 12 weeks to review the documentation. The consultant will then take steps to setup up an interview with the client. The interview will take only 10 to 30 minutes. If approved, it then takes just a week to complete the process and get the Visa. Angie tells her clients that on average, from the time they sign with her to the time they receive their Visa, it takes about 6 months. Finally, Angie leaves us with this heartfelt message: “Wherever you want to be in the United States, I am here to help. And I am honored to help you!” ~ Angie Rupert, Rupert Law Group Get your copy of the Go Legal Yourself eBook FREE when you get the APP from your APP Store and also get my latest book “Go Own Yourself” which is available on Amazon from this link. Call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show!  Today I’m talking with Brent Wilsey, the President of Wilsey Asset Management and we’re talking about how to make money work for you while you’re in business. Topics covered in this episode with Brent Brent gives advice for new entrepreneurs on what to do with their money - to be careful with cash but also not foolish about opportunities. Brent gives advice on “paying yourself” - which should be a small amount if you’re just getting started. Brent says money is very nice but believes it’s the by-product of doing a good job and the right things for people he works with. Once you get past that first stage or 4 or 5 years down the road, you want to make sure you have a reserve of at least 4 to 5 months to keep going during difficult times - and consider investing “long-term.” Kelly asks Brent his advice on three questions: from a money-saving point of view, what should a business do after their initial start-up phase? What advice would you give for a business that is now in the “growth” phase? What advice would you give a business owner that would like to retire in 3-years? His answers might surprise you.  Also, Brent advises that meeting with a financial planner early on can be a wise decision and is recommended. Finally, Kelly asks Brent if he could do one thing over again, what would it be? We talked about the three “Cs” of marketing: Customers; Competitors; and the contribution we would make (our competitive advantage). Companies that are above 100 million in revenues have people on staff that focus on this. But companies below that (revenue) typically do not because they simply don’t have that expertise.” ~ Don Sando Don works with companies in two basic areas: developing overall business and operational plans, as well as marketing & sales plans... assessing the market and developing the plans to grow revenue, market share, and profitability. working with organizations to create a culture of accountability, such that plans actually get executed. I’m so happy to have back on the show Kasey Ortiz the “Tax Tip Diva!” I first interview Kasey on episode 17 Kasey Ortiz: The Importance of Taxes and Clean Books. Be sure to go back and listen to that episode. Not people know but Kasey is a proud Marine Corp Veteran. What you need to know New tax laws put in place for 2018 have proven to be the most challenging to understand in 30 years. Meals and entertainment deductions are no more. Meal expenses for business presentations are deductible. The 199A deduction offers a 20% reduction of business income from your taxable income - and is a very complicated calculation. Please go to your APP Store and download our “Go Legal Yourself” APP to receive Kasey’s free PDF on this topic. The IRS views Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency as “property” so on your taxes, you’ll need to include the fair market value of that property. It will be taxed. There are a few tax credits business owners should be aware of: New business owners can receive a $5,000 expense deduction. This means your expense for Kelly’s “Go Legal Yourself! Start-Up Essentials” is completely deductible on your taxes! Finally, if you’re in California, be aware you could be subject to 8 different taxes! Otherwise investigate the required ABC’s taxes in your area. Make sure you visit Kasey online at TheTaxTipDiva.com where she educates individuals in bite-size pieces to help you take the fear out of taxes. Call the show! 760-784-9109 Today in our 3rd and final episode in the the 3-part series, I’ll be covering #11 through #15 of the Fifteen business laws every entrepreneur should know. So let’s get started on the final episode for this series! # 11 - The CAN-SPAM Act Regulates Commercial Emails The CAN-SPAM Act, a law that sets the rules for commercial email, establishes requirements for commercial messages, gives recipients the right to have you stop emailing them, and spells out tough penalties for violations. The law makes no exception for business-to-business email. The Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing Act of 2003, signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 16, 2003, established the United States' first national standards for the sending of commercial e-mail and requires the Federal Trade Commission to enforce its provisions. #12 - FTC Telemarketing Marketing Sales Rule The Telemarketing Sales Rule, which requires telemarketers to make specific disclosures of material information; prohibits misrepresentations; sets limits on the times telemarketers may call consumers; prohibits calls to a consumer who has asked not to be called again; and sets payment restrictions for the sale of certain goods and services. # 13 - FTC Sales Tax Collection # 14 International Sales Laws It instantly opens your business to a new audience but that exposure comes with regulations. It poses questions about shipping, taxes, and customs. Make sure you speak with your CPA or Accountant about his. # 15 - FTC Data Security Many companies keep sensitive personal information about customers or employees in their files or on their network. Having a sound security plan in place to collect only what you need, keep it safe, and dispose of it securely can help you meet your legal obligations to protect that sensitive data. The FTC has free resources for businesses of any size. Go back and listen to Ep. 7 Website Must Haves: Privacy Policy on your website Disclaimers on your website The Terms and Conditions (TOS) as to how a person can use your website. Call the show! 760-784-9109 Today in our 2nd of the 3-part series, I’ll be covering #6 through #10 of the 15 business laws every entrepreneur should know.
