Brandon Brabham
Brandon Brabham had a good paycheck and a secure path, but he felt called to move. In this conversation, Brandon tells Buster about the prayer and dream that led him to leave oil and gas, his fear of leaving what he knew, and his decision to move his family to Colorado.
They talk about trusting God with the next step, choosing the rooms and people that shape your life, and Brandon’s challenge to “surround yourself with rockets.” They also get honest about the cost of building a business that takes you away from your family. For men wondering whether to stay comfortable or take a bold step, Brandon’s testimony asks: Who is guiding your steps?
Five key points
Brandon’s testimony: growing up without a clear roadmap and learning to seek God’s direction.
The prayer, dream, and unexpected last day at the job he was afraid to leave.
Why the room you’re in matters—and what Brandon means by surrounding yourself with rockets.
How business success became a “successful prison” that competed with family time.
Moving to Colorado, resetting his priorities, and choosing to lead alongside his wife.

EP 85 Cause Joy | Paul Edwards
Buster first met Paul as his massage therapist. Somewhere between working through a bad back, talking ’90s music, and trading book recommendations, they became friends who challenge each other to grow.
In this conversation, Paul and Buster talk about caring for your body before pain becomes your normal, catching the words you use about yourself, facing everyday fears, and being present with the people around you. It all leads to a simple idea: cause joy.
Five things they get into:
How driving, desk work, and other daily habits can affect how your body feels
Why taking care of yourself deserves a place on the calendar
What changes when you replace “I’m trying” with an honest look at what you’re doing
How fear and negative self-talk can hold you back
Why noticing someone and saying something kind can change their day
Paul and his wife Tracy run Tabletime Massage in League City, Texas.

EP 84 Nathan Bennett
What happens when you stop trying to be just one kind of athlete?
In this episode of The Good Old Boy Podcast, Buster sits down with Nathan Bennett — a self-described “fitness butterfly” who has bounced from GORUCK events and F3 to running, strongman competitions, hiking, bodybuilding, and whatever challenge happens to catch his attention next.
Nathan shares how he went from being relatively inactive to discovering that he was capable of doing far more than he ever realized. Along the way, the conversation gets into the value of doing hard things, Type 2 fun, suffering alongside your buddies, and why sometimes the best way to grow is simply to sign up for something that scares you a little.
Nathan also takes us behind the scenes of preparing for his first bodybuilding competition — the meal prep, training, sacrifices, spray tan, posing, and mental battle that comes with getting stage-ready. But just three weeks before his original competition date, a serious health setback forced him to pull out and reevaluate everything he had been working toward.
Instead of quitting, Nathan recovered, reset the goal, and got back after it.
Buster and Nathan also talk about something that often gets overlooked when chasing ambitious goals: the impact those goals have on your wife, family, friendships, and everyday life. Personal improvement is great, but not when the people closest to you are constantly paying the price for it.
Ultimately, this episode isn't really about bodybuilding, running, rucking, or strongman.
It's about being willing to try.
Nathan's Good Old Boy wisdom sums it up perfectly: don't let the fear of failure keep you from trying something different. You're probably capable of far more than you realize.
Maybe you don't need to find your one thing.
Maybe you just need to become a fitness butterfly.

EP 83 - Billy Gaskey & Travis Green "Surrender the Glory"
Billy Gaskey and Travis Green, hosts of the Surrender the Glory Podcast, finally sit down with Buster for a conversation that has been a couple of years in the making.
What starts with homeschooling, raising kids, and building community quickly turns into a much deeper conversation about faith, fatherhood, mentoring young men, vulnerability, and what happens when men stop giving the automatic “I’m good” answer.
Billy and Travis share their experiences working with young men through church and youth ministry, including why connection has to come before correction and why today's young men need trustworthy adults willing to walk beside them, listen, and have conversations that aren't always comfortable.
The guys also dig into the mission behind Surrender the Glory: giving people a place to tell their testimony. Not every story needs addiction, disaster, or a rock-bottom comeback. Sometimes the testimony is simply remaining faithful through ordinary life. Every story has value, because a story that seems ordinary to you may be exactly what someone else needs to hear.
And because this is still the Good Old Boy Podcast, it doesn't stay serious the whole time. The conversation wanders through rucking, growing up in the '80s and '90s, questionable childhood decisions, Antarctica, Missing 411, dolphins, conspiracy theories, and plenty of other rabbit holes.
Underneath it all, though, is a conversation about men showing up for their families, showing up for younger generations, showing up for one another, and being willing to admit when life isn't as simple as “I'm good.” As Travis puts it, men often carry things because they don't want to burden somebody else—but sometimes talking about it is exactly what takes a little weight out of the backpack.

EP 82: Thomas "JAX" Jackson
In this episode, I sit down with my friend Thomas "JAX" Jackson, creator of the YouTube channel Shoot With JAX. What starts as a conversation about firearms, training, filmmaking, and building a YouTube channel turns into a much broader discussion about discipline, leadership, adventure, family, friendship, and deliberately doing hard things.
JAX talks about why he started his channel. Not because he considered himself an expert, but because he wanted to become a better shooter and learn filmmaking along the way. We also revisit our Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim and Yosemite Misogi adventures, including some difficult decisions JAX helped make when things didn't go according to plan. From flying Marine Corps Cobra attack helicopters and commercial jets to training in Afghanistan, raising a family, staying fit, and building something creative on YouTube, the conversation ultimately comes back to growth through action, authenticity, and surrounding yourself with people willing to push alongside you.
