Description

I started this podcast with my dear friend Mondi, but she decided she’s happy, for now, to be home with her gorgeous kids. So, I’m flying solo. Greatness Adjacent is a mini deep-dive with people around me who are doing all sorts of inspiring things. I want to hear about their journeys, what the road to here was like for them. I love it all: the failures and missteps along the way that lead to the best pivots, the successes that came later, the discovery of an unexpected calling when life serves up its inevitable surprises, the victory of sheer sticktoitiveness after years of grit work and the easy breezy paths when sometimes personal gifts are just obvious. These stories empower me to keep trying to figure out what my thing is, to go after that and to stay open to change.

Daisy is an MVP of my life. She’s an actor, a comedian, a voiceover artist and now show creator, writer, executive producer, BAFTA nominee, BOSS. She found her strongest stride yet as a woman in her 40s with 2 young children. I love her. In addition to her gigantic talent, no one is more real or more fun. Forever my girl, forever want some of what she’s having.Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! http://greatnessadjacentpodcast.com/
I love the Capano sisters big time. Christy was on before, and now I got this real-life hero. If you were writing her as a character, her accomplishments wouldn’t be believed. The idea of a Nurse Practitioner getting her doctorate (with degrees from Georgetown and Johns Hopkins no less), Licensed, Certified Midwife, Longtime Acro Yoga practitioner/teacher/teacher trainer, former Doctor Without Borders participant, bi-lingual traveling nurse serving remote indigenous communities in Central America, and social justice advocate, it seems farfetched and ridiculous. How could anyone do all that?! Well, meet Katie Capano. She does all that and more! She builds field hospitals. It’s madness of the best kind. I can’t gush enough about her work, her intelligence, her bravery, and her badassery. She’s Science Spice meets Empress of Woo. She’s taken all her passions and mixed them into a stunning life potion. I’ll have what she’s having. Awestruck is an understatement.Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! http://greatnessadjacentpodcast.com/
From a baby violinist to a tiny dancer falling in love with ballet at 6 years old, to becoming a world-renowned painter, Lydia has never not lived an artistic life. She’s a tremendous, unstoppable creative force. Nothing has derailed her being able to express herself with her particular genius-not injury, not initially having very little money, not a pandemic, nothing. From dancer to painter, incredible people have sought her out because her talent is astounding. Choreographers, gallery owners, authors…she has the wow factor in spades. Lydia comes alive talking all things movement, art, painting, music, philosophy and travel. Her life, like her brilliant work, is big and beautiful. Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Here’s How »Join the Greatness Adjacent Community today:greatnessadjacentpodcast.comGreatness Adjacent Instagram
Kim sculpts bodies, minds, and spirits. She's a master Pilates instructor, founder of Physical Perfection Pilates. Check out her IG (@physicalperfectionpilates) and you'll see why this is the perfect name for her studio. She's a life and wellness coach as well. Her beauty, joy, and power make her a personal icon to me. Her private client list is filled with celebrities and athletes. She has a long wait-list for her private, bespoke sessions. She gives just as much back to communities in Los Angeles where Pilates isn't necessarily easily available to everyone with her other company, Pilates In The Hood. Pilates In The Hood is a program fully covered by insurance (the 1st of its kind) that brings not only Pilates to people, but also jobs for women who can train with her and then teach for Pilates In The Hood. She says she's always seen herself as "the Black Jane Fonda" and I absolutely see that. She has an app coming, a clothing line in the works, her custom resistance bands are out and an online studio all on the horizon. I cannot wait! I've been insanely lucky to take 3 private classes over zoom with her and she's THE BEST. I mean, it's torture, I feel like every muscle in my body is on fire...but in a good way. Kim FTW!Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Here’s How »Join the Greatness Adjacent Community today:greatnessadjacentpodcast.comGreatness Adjacent Instagram
Deva Dalporto is one of the nicest human beings I’ve ever met. This beautiful, smart woman is an actress, a writer, a painter, a mom, and an accidental influencer. She does them all so damn well too. She created a parody video in 2013 that went viral and continues to create hilarious, relevant content that resonates with parents across the globe. Check her out everywhere: @mylifesuckers. She built her brand on love, humor, authenticity, and her truths. I met her in college and was a goner from the get-go. You’ll see what I mean. She’s a complete delight. No wonder the world wants more from her. Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Here’s How »Join the Greatness Adjacent Community today:greatnessadjacentpodcast.comGreatness Adjacent Instagram
Suze is a brilliant entrepreneur who was the pioneer in making meditation accessible to everyone. A former fashion editor, Suze is the founder and creative genius behind Unplug Meditation. There are 2 gorgeous studio locations in Santa Monica and West Hollywood, and she developed an app from scratch. Her teachers are the best in the field and she has a Teacher Training program with graduates who have opened their own meditation studios all over the world. She is a force of positivity, optimism and the never, ever, ever give up mentality. She shares her information and expertise openly. She believes anyone can achieve their dreams, and she wants to see people go after what they want. “No” doesn’t stop her, she’s not afraid to start projects all over, from the beginning, and she’s worked in every single role within her company, learning what each job really needs. After sitting with her, I felt charged up, ready to dream big and full of hope.
Dave Stine can build one-of-kind, custom pieces for your home. He builds them out of lumber from his family farm that rests on 1,000 acres. But he can also sew. And, his college job was as a diesel mechanic because he speaks cars too. Oh, and he’s an attorney, NBD. Essentially, he’s a unicorn. Dave is an absolute gem of a guy. His work is beautiful, hand-crafted, slow-made and sustainable. He runs his very successful furniture business with his wife, and his awesome story is full of pivots and dream-chasing that panned out perfectly.
Megan Ferguson is everything I imagined her to be and more – hilarious, smart, talented, beautiful, honest, and all about action over apathy. From her upbringing in the South to ballerina to actor to becoming a mom and a good human, she’s real, down to earth, and has the most winning way about her. We talk about her career, how she deals with anxiety, how she gives herself and anyone else who may be interested “good human homework”, which are tangible ways to get involved tackling injustice and other big issues of our time. Her new show “Soundtrack” is on Netflix and she has a fun, juicy dream of a role on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” this season also. She’s a very, very good egg.
Christy Capano is a fantastic interior designer currently working on a dream project in Italy. Her family is Italian and she felt Italy calling her. She up and moved to Florence nearly 2 years ago to work with a couple who purchased a working farm and then painstakingly renovated the foundations of it. Christy gets to transform the inside, drawing inspiration from every part of the land there – from the moss to the sunsets. Christy is self-taught and wants to make interior design accessible to everyone. Whether you own a big house, you rent an apartment, or you’re on a budget, she believes everyone can have a beautiful home, even if it’s done room by room. When she’s not working on projects, she is always taking a language class, taking a design class, touring iconic homes in every city she visits, and soaking up every bit of knowledge she can get. Her talent and intelligence make the fiercest combination.
Big Deal alert for me. Alison Van Pelt is a contemporary artist of exceptional everything. Her skill, her eye, her signature magic blur, her paintings feel 3-dimensional and alive. She’s a treasured American painter who was always drawing as a child but never thought it could be a profession. Her story is such a good one. She shares how, first, Francis Bacon’s works then a quote by him, led her to her lightbulb moment. The moment was when she found her process, which she describes so generously with me. I could gaze at her work, especially the horses, all day. She’s featured in many museums and serious private collections. I’m still counting my lucky stars she came and spoke with me…and then was the sweetest person ever, to top it off Unicorn status.
This gorgeous woman can transform anything you wear into clothing gold. With a long roster of top stylists, mega A-list performers and the best couture fashion houses coming to her for help, she’s built her business, Studio Unbiased (@studiounbiased), into the go-to atelier for adaptations, collaborations and custom designs. She’s self-taught, there was nothing traditional in her training. She learned to knit in one day! She can do the most intricate of bead work. Whatever it is, she figures it out. A dashiki into the raddest motorcycle jacket ever? No problem. She calls her process more “mechanical engineering” than anything else. This is an artist who has a true calling and vision for what she does. She told me about a project (that’s still secret) where she had to make someone invisible for a scene where they were driving-the footage is unbelievable and I hope to share it eventually in a follow-up. Her own designs are everything I want to wear. I’m in complete awe of Wendi and her remarkable gifts.
Whitney Leigh Morris (@whitneyleighmorris) lives tiny but mighty. Her home is a rental cottage called The Tiny Canal Cottage, on the Venice Canals, that she shares with her husband, her son and their 2 dogs. Their home is less than 400 sq feet with a shared outdoor area of about the same size. Whitney and her husband have poured their heart and soul into the cottage and it’s stunning. Every inch of space sings with form, function and beauty. It’s dripping in plants and light and her impeccable taste. She is genius in how she uses the space. Many pieces in her home are mobile or versatile which gives freedom and fluidity to her design. She is dedicated to reducing waste and has tailored her business to align with her values of trying to preserve our Earth. Whitney’s blog and The Tiny Canal Cottage on IG have a big following for good reason. She is a real lamplighter who lives a highly creative and highly conscious life. That mix is a powerful one.
This woman is grace personified. She had a master plan for her life. Everything went according to her plan until she had her daughter, Arizona, thirteen years ago. Arizona is on the Autism spectrum. At first, the diagnosis felt dark and hopeless. She was lost, her husband wanted a divorce. For the past eleven years, Susanna has devoted herself to helping Arizona. In the process, she learned basically everything there is to know about Autism and the resources that are available. She started advising families as she went, to share the wealth of knowledge she was gaining. She is now a certified life coach for families of children with special needs, an Autism advocate, and she’s launching an online program to offer the resource guide she wishes she had in the beginning. In addition, she is a reiki healer who offers women’s retreats throughout the year. She says today, as a single mama to a child with special needs and a life coach to families of children with special needs, she’s the happiest she’s ever been in her life. Her transformation is extraordinary.
Katie McGuinness is an actor who has been steadily working for over a decade. She never stopped or got sidetracked, no matter what. She is dedicated to the craft of performing, but she’s also dedicated to living in a world of real ensemble playing. She creates her life as a troupe member with her friends and longtime actor boyfriend, forever being creative together, bouncing ideas off each other and helping one another venture into new artistic angles so they’re often making their own fresh opportunities and not waiting for outside sources to give them permission to try something. They’re planning to build an artist’s colony. Katie has done tiny pub productions, big theater productions, immersive theater with Punchdrunk Theater Company, film and television. She’s currently on fire. She finished filming Season 1 of “Snowpiercer” which will air on TNT in the spring of 2020. She’s here in LA now filming 1 episode of Ryan Murphy’s upcoming Netflix series “Hollywood” playing legend Vivien Leigh, no less. Her work and way of life are so inspiring.
Leona West Fox is an exceptional nutritionist, herbalist, and functional medicine practitioner. She walks the talk and it shines through in her glowy skin, zest for life, and long list of clients who trust her. She found her calling at age 16 when she got very sick. She was way ahead of her time making kombucha in her kitchen, learning about meditation and realizing how food can be the best medicine…as a teenager! She sees clients for a vast spectrum of reasons. She wants to help all different kinds of people achieve their health goals. She will light your fire to want to know more about your health, to learn to listen to what your body is telling you, and how to begin a love affair with food if you hope to stick around for as long as possible. She not only wants you to live long, she wants you to live well.

Leah and I share over 30 years of friendship. I love her and our long history makes her one of those friends that fortune gifts you with as a forever person. She’s a seeker and creative visionary. She’s been a writer, a stylist, an RIE enthusiast/educator, a blogger, a regular on a reality TV show (There Goes the Motherhood), a music student… but that doesn’t even really scratch the surface. She’s a devoted mom of twins and an adoring wife. Her husband is a very successful producer and businessman. Together, they traveled the world with their children for a year. Then they bought one of the most gorgeous homes on earth and Leah made it even more unreal with her interior design skills. Did I mention she kills at that, too? Not many women in their 40s can handle Burning Man for eleven days. Leah can. She designed a third eye art car a few years ago. It not only comes to Burning Man with them, it lives as an art installation on their lawn the rest of the time to be used. Her constant pursuit of creativity and adventure carries over into her strong, anything but boring, marriage. Unconventional, honest, respectful, loving… and SUPER SPICY, she shares her views on monogamy and how she keeps it hot after nearly fifteen years together. Thankfully, nothing has changed since sixth grade: she’s going to squeeze every last drop of excitement out of her life. She never stops making things, making music, making out, or making an entrance. Sit back and enjoy!   Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Jessie Collins is an actor whose been on Broadway with a few of the biggest talents out there, starred on many TV shows, and been in some great films. Juilliard trained and rural Texas raised, she grew up in a cattle ranching family with a young single mom and three sisters. She tells her story of moving from her hometown to NY, to navigating her career highs and lows, to marrying her writer husband, and then juggling motherhood for the past three years. She’s one of my best friends, and I think it’ll be easy to hear why. She’s the most honest and warm soul a person could hope to know.   Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! She has a YouTube channel with tutorials called Francesca Make Me Pretty… and she will. Francesca has a degree in art from LMU and has been doing makeup since she was a teenager. Her mother is a hairstylist and her father was an art director. Making things pretty is in her genes. She’s been in the business for over twenty years.
