Sydney's Inner West Council (IWC) claims its "Fairer Futures" plan will help address the dire housing affordability crisis by building tens of thousands of new homes. But housing campaigners are warning that affordable homes will be demolished to make way for expensive, luxury apartments. Erina Delinicolas and Duncan Roden are renters at 50–52 Warren Road in Marrickville, the first site slated for demolition under the new plan. They joined the Green Left Show to discuss why the IWC's pro-developer plan is flawed and suggest alternatives that put people before profit. Both are involved in the Better Future Coalition, a group of Inner West residents who are campaigning against the Fairer Future plan, calling for more affordable and public housing, genuine consultation with residents and a better planning system. The election of Zohran Mamdani, member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), as mayor of New York City on November 4 was a kick in the teeth to United States President Donald Trump and his “Make America Great Again” movement, and a beacon of hope for socialists around the world. Mamdani’s win was built on an exciting campaign that mobilised more than 100,000 volunteers to promote his platform, which included tackling the cost-of-living crisis by freezing rents, implementing free buses and opening publicly owned supermarkets. Winnie Marion, a DSA member based in NYC, joined the Green Left Show to discuss the campaign, and the next steps for the socialist movement. Marion is speaking (via zoom) at a public forum organised by the Socialist Alliance on November 22, details here: https://www.greenleft.org.au/2025-11/event/forum-mamdanis-election-beacon-hope We acknowledge that this video was produced on stolen Aboriginal land. Catherine Connolly has won a resounding victory in the Presidential election with the largest percentage and largest total votes of any presidential candidate in history. It is also the first time the left has won a majority of votes in a national election in Ireland. Connolly did this while up against the political and media establishment, and with a strong left platform that included opposing Israel’s genocide and aspirations for a more just and equal society. Isaac Nellist spoke to Irish ecosocialist activist Paul Murphy about why Connolly’s campaign was so successful. Paul is now a member of People Before Profit and is a Teachta Dála (TD, member of the lower house of the Irish Parliament) for the party in Dublin South-West. People Before Profit played a big part in the Connolly campaign. Paul is a former Member of the European Parliament for the Socialist Party for Dublin.. He has been active in a number of campaigns including against water charges, against racism, for refugee rights, solidarity with Palestine and against re-armament of Europe and NATO expansion. Frances Cheffins is the project manager for the What Were You Wearing’s (WWYW) national Move For Them Day on November 15. Move For Them Day participants will run, walk or join in other activities to raise awareness and money for victim-survivors. While WWYW started as an art installation to challenge victim-blaming, it has grown into a not-for-profit organisation that provides survivor healing groups, education and advocacy. WWYW works to end sexual, domestic and family violence against women and counters victim-blaming. It called two national mobilisations in 2024 and one in May this year, which drew thousands to demand urgent action from governments. Cheffins is based in Naarm/Melbourne and helped organise the previous national day of action, as well as the upcoming Move For Them Day.
