Dogs are scratching, chewing at their paws, pacing and just plain miserable. Is it allergies and what can we do to help? Apoquel is certainly one effective option, but what else can we do? Relax and listen to this fascinating discussion with Dr Chris Bessent is a holistic veterinarian, using Chinese herbs, acupuncture, food therapy and chiropractic to treat her patients. Her website, Herbsmith, is a fantastic resource to help you learn more about natural care for your senior dog...and that all important allergy relief. https://www.herbsmithinc.com/
I've long been curious about raw food, but there's a big part of me that found it hard to believe it was good for our dogs (and cats!). After all, there are so many pet food companies telling us how wonderful their products are. If senior dog nutrition is a concern, you absolutely have to tune into this podcast with my special guest Dr. Ian Billinghurst. Trust me, you are going to learn a lot!! There's so much talk about CBD oil, I have found it all quite confusing. What brand to buy? How much to use? The amount of anecdotal evidence about its effectiveness in helping our senior dogs with a wide variety of health issues including epilepsy, arthritis and dementia meant it was time to do a podcast on it. I had read a lot of great things about NuLeaf so I invited Crystal Guess, Senior Wholesale Account Executive for a chat. It's long and there may be parts you're less interested in but trust me, there is a ton of helpful info it's worth listening to. I remember the first time Red had a seizure like it was yesterday. I knew nothing about this issue and naturally I was totally unprepared. I'm so thrilled to welcome today's guest Dorothy Wills-Raftery who will be sharing her wealth of knowledge about canine epilepsy. She is an award winning author and photojournalist, Siberian Husky aficionado, Canine Epilepsy advocate and writer and host of the award nominated show, The Sibe Vibe, which airs on Dog Works Radio, Podcast app and itunes. On today's episode I chat with Dr Kate Pittman, a "house call" veterinarian in Greater Boston for almost 30 years. I like the fact she views veterinary care as including not only the technical aspects of treating illness and supporting recovery, but caring for the whole pet and the family as well. She co-authored the book Stand by Me: Caring for Your Aging and Ailing Dog." I read it and highly recommend you do as well. You may also want to consider getting one for a senior dog parent you know. The best way for me to describe it is a handbook to help you navigate your pup's old age. Dr Pittman recommended an incontinence product during the podcast but it wasn't clear so here it is. It's called Incurin, which is a form of estrogen that doesn't cause bone marrow problems that some estrogens do. Here is a link where you can purchase it - https://amzn.to/2D2itpm
Quality of life. If you share your life with an old sick dog, then quality of life is something that's never far from your thoughts. But how is it measured? How can we be sure our dogs are not suffering? How do we know when it's time to say goodbye? It's a tough topic to be sure, but I know this podcast is going to help. I had a fascinating and eye opening conversation with veterinarian Dr. Keith Niesenbaum, and you are going to want to hear it! His practice is called Crawford Dog and Cat Hospital and is located in Garden City Park New York. Do you ever wish you could talk to your old dog? Find out what he needs? In this podcast I chat with Marybeth Haines, an animal communicator and I can tell you it was fascinating! As senior dog parents we're always looking for something new to try that may help - another supplement, a different drug, recommendations for best beds or ramps. I know this may seem quite different to many, but isn't it worth exploring? Below you will find links to Marybeth's websites and FB page, and a way to get in touch should you wish to book your own private session or just learn more about how she can help. http://www.powerofpets365.com http://facebook.com/groups/amongstfriendsniagara/ http://www.thegalspeaks.com/
Of course we love all our dogs, but then we meet our "heart dog" who is our soul mate, who we love and connect with like no other. Saying goodbye to any pet we share our life with is beyond heartbreaking, but how do we say goodbye, stand up and keep living after we lose our heart dog? Tune in to this incredible episode with Roxanne Hawn, best-selling author of Heart Dog: Surviving the Loss of Your Canine Soul Mate. It was such a pleasure having the opportunity to speak with her and believe me, this can absolutely change your life.
