Here’s to having a better time in our bodies and inventing a world where that’s easier for everyone to do. Thanks so much to Dr. Blank for joining us for this episode! Firstly, we are 100% pro-science. Secondly, let’s have some fun. We’re examining seven pop psychology findings that were later debunked in more rigorous clinical trials. But how do we FEEL about each of them? And what can we learn about ourselves by examining those feelings? The Hannahs are on the case! Alan Godshaw might be best described as a martial artist turned philosopher turned martial artist turned artist turned martial artist. Humble to a fault, his 38 years of training have earned him a Roku Dan Black Belt in Shotokan Karate and made him a world class sensei, but he’s currently more excited about his Blue Belt in Brazilian Jujitsu. Enjoy as he and Hannah Hart explore the upsides and downsides of martial arts—and the cultures that surround them. How often do you connect the dots between personal problems and societal problems? All the time? That’s what we thought! And that’s why we’re talking policy on the pod today. Hugo Soto-Martinez is an activist and organizer who turned his passion for justice into a political career. A huge part of his platform is housing justice, and we’re excited to discuss what he thinks could change in LA, where the unhoused population has been growing, and people are frequently left to solve their own housing problems without support, options, or resources.  Learn more about Hugo at hugo2022.com, follow him @hugoforcd13 on all platforms, and don’t forget to look up your own local candidates! Local races determine what happens on the ground in your neighborhood, so getting involved can make a huge difference. Whether we opt out earlier or stay in the academic track for the long haul, all of us spend time in school. It’s a major source of stress, confusion, and negative self-image for many. This week, we’re reflecting on the relationship between mental health and school with one of the most schooled people we know! Please enjoy this episode with Dr. Samantha Davis as we air out some of those feelings about a lifetime of struggling through school. It’s time to ask society, “Why are you the way you are?” and get a headlock + noogie combo instead of an answer. We’re talking to our friend Hannibal about his everyday experience as a cis het man, and what toxic masculinity has meant to him, both before and after he became aware of its existence. We are so lucky to have Valerie Harvey on the pod this week. She is an extremely talented MUA who expanded her work to the DEI field in 2020 to help people navigate their growing awareness of racism, sexism, homophobia, and all of the -isms that keep us from seeing each another as fellow human beings. In this episode, she shares her personal experience as well as wisdom about the motivating factors that uphold these -isms, and ways we can use disagreements as an opportunity to call people in rather than call them out. Please visit Society of Allies to learn more or to book Val for DEI sessions. Visit Mohawk Makeup if you are in the market for an MUA or would just love to see her beautiful work. To Gelby: I've cried at all my places of work, many times. Most times alone, but other times definitely in front of my supervisor. I think usually I've been met with empathy from those people, but it is a hard situation and can feel embarrassing, which is unfortunate. Also if it wasn't super clear, I'm also a 4. XD

A BIG hell yes to the need for alone time! That bit really hit home for me. I'm 34 and have a 5 yr old, 3 yr old, and 1 yr old and absolutely have to coordinate with my S.O. to ensure I have alone time or everyone is miserable.

I just started binging this podcast last week and I am so happy you did this episode! I'm 29 and my mom died when I was 17. I went to a really small school (52 kids in my senior class) and my mom died the over the summer. When I school started back up again after the summer and it was so weird cause everyone at the school knew my mom (she was big in the PTA and ran the school bookstore) and everyone knew she'd died but none of my classmates said anything (other than. my best friends who'd obviously been with me over the summer). Classmates who'd normally just smile and say "hey" when you passed them between classes just looked away cause they clearly just didn't know what to say. I think it's important to talk about these things and take away the stigma around it. People shouldn't have to feel weird because their loved one dies

just started binging this podcast this morning and while I have no idea if it's true that in Japan they don't tell people when they have cancer, my mom chose to not know what stage her cancer was when she was diagnosed cause she was worried she wouldn't fight as hard if she found out it was stage 4. unfortunately it was stage 4 and she did end up passing away but those 10 months she was fighting it she had this amazing self esteem/confidence I'd never seen in her before!
