One of the heads started to degrade and quickly after the drive became irresponsive. The hard drive just stopped getting recognized, and the owner contacted us for help. After the initial inspection, we've determined that in order to obtain a complete recovery this drive will need a head replacement. First, we imaged all good heads in the drive and then the head swap took place. After replacing the head assembly and performing the transfer of adaptive information the drive was able to read the remaining part that used to belong to the degraded head. Corrosion had severely damaged the connection pads separating them from the memory card. After careful inspection, we were able to spot the damage. As it turned out, corrosion from salt water had eaten away all mating points of the interface with the card's circuitry. Connections were restored using a microscope, 40AWG wire, and JBC soldering station. If your hard drive is making any noises other than the usual idle hum, it is not good news. In specific data recovery case, we were able to inspect the head assembly, where slight contamination was found. After cleaning um the head assembly this hard drive did not sound like a typewriter anymore. In fact, it was able to produce over 50MB/S read speed during our image process in Data extractor using PC3000 Express. This is just to show that heads can get contaminated but also cleaned. Platters got contaminated from possible physical contact between heads and edge of the disk (near the parking area). In this video, I will show you how you can recover data from a Sandisk flash drive with the damaged controller. First, inspect all headers and pads on the connector (that is the most common issue for Sandisk USB flash drives). In this case the connector and headers seemed to be fine, but we will replace the connector anyways to rule out a simple issue. Further visual inspection revealed, that a resistor on 5v power rail was burnt. An identical donor flash drive was used for parts in this case. After replacing a burnt resistor, Sandisk USB flash drive still did not want to work. Powersurge must have damaged the controller, and luckily the donor was so close that the controllers matched and clients flash drive was once again working after the transplant. In order to ensure that controllers are compatible, USB flash drives have to be identical size, PCB has to match, and part number on the controller has to be the same.
