On this episode of HRN Happy Hour we're thrilled to present the first episode of one of HRN's newest shows: Fields.  Fields brings you the stories of people who are working in urban agriculture—for money, for fun, to feed the hungry, and for entirely other reasons. In each episode, hosts Melissa Metrick and Wythe Marschall delve into different foods grown in cities. Moreover, we investigate the whys behind getting up in the morning and working as a farmer in the shadow of skyscrapers. You don’t need to be a farmer to enjoy this podcast, or even a foodie! With their expert guests, Melissa and Wythe break down the realities and possible futures of urban farming to their elements. So, how are seeds gender-defying time travelers? Subscribe to Fields and find out! In our first story, Melissa and Wythe talk to plant-focused artists Ellie Irons and Anne Percoco of the Next Epoch Seed Library and to Ken Greene, expert seed breeder and seed librarian. We explore how different seeds travel across time and space—sometimes becoming “invasive” “weeds,” and sometimes disappearing from human cultivation. Anne and Ellie are working to help all of us, especially those of us in big cities, rethink our relationships to the plants traveling all around us, to our neglected environments, to our politicized borders, and to the world’s rapidly changing climate. Ken is working with indigenous leaders to grow, save, and return—without keeping—sacred seeds. We talk about organic seeds, the ethics of growing, and farming while queer. We learned so much from our first guests, and we know you will, too!Further Resources: Seed Shed: https://seedshed.org/about/peopleThe Native American Seed Sanctuary: https://hvfarmhub.org/seed-sanctuarySubscribe now to get the episodes as they launch! (Apple Podcasts | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS). Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. This week, we're presenting the third episode of HRN's newest show: The Big Food Question. How can our food system rebuild and reimagine amid the unprecedented crisis of COVID-19 and a long overdue reckoning with generations of inequity? As every corner of the food world grapples with issues that will define its future, The Big Food Question will tackle practical and philosophical questions alike for eaters, operators, and workers across food business sectors and topics. From restaurants and bars, to processors and distributors, from farms to food banks, The Big Food Question will feature expert guests who help us understand how industries can move forward while prioritizing safety, equity, and economic stability. In this episode Sother Teague shares his detailed playbook for re-opening his East Village bar with indoor seating when the time comes. He expects he will only be allowed 8 guests at a time - less than half his normal capacity. Taking into consideration capital, staffing and safety he has laid out a reservation system that he believes will decrease points of contact, provide enough revenue to stay afloat, and establish high hygiene standards. The question remains however, when he will set the plan into motion. Sother also recommends viewing the resources available at www.barmagic.com/relief.Subscribe to The Big Food Question wherever you get your podcasts (Apple Podcasts | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS)  In March, HRN began producing all of our 35 weekly shows from our homes all around the country.
