The Paradox of the Human Condition
Episode Summary:
In this thought-provoking episode of 'The Stories We Tell Ourselves,' we delve deep into the enigmatic journey that is human existence—where the very essence of our vulnerabilities and strengths are put under the microscope.
Our exploration begins from the innocence of infancy, a time when love and protection seem to shield us from the looming complexities of life. Yet, it is precisely within these early moments of nurturing that the groundwork is laid for the perplexing dichotomies that we all must face.
Throughout the podcast, we contemplate the poignant irony that what brings us the purest joy—love, contentment, and fulfillment—is also what renders us susceptible to the sharpest of pains: loss, grief, and disillusionment. Our innate quest for happiness is depicted as a pursuit of a mythical leprechaun, a tantalizing chase for contentment that is perpetually just out of reach.
Listeners are guided through the intricate dance of positivity, a concept often championed as the panacea for life's ills. But reality bears a far more complicated landscape, with the journey to positivity riddled with obstacles, teaching us that disappointment can often feel like the only constant. The metaphoric imagery of being leaves in the unforgiving storm of existence brings to life the sense of helplessness that can arise in the face of life's unpredictable nature.
'The Paradox of the Human Condition' does not merely expose the unpredictable and often cruel aspects of life but also sets the stage for an introspective dialogue. It asks the pertinent, timeless questions about the nature of contentment and the dynamics of human resilience in the face of an indifferent universe. This episode is an invitation to contemplate the great paradoxes of life and to find meaning within them, providing a compass through the tumultuous terrain of human emotion and fate.

In this episode of Habits of the Few, Mo Naboulsi dives into the history and significance of the Iranian Revolution. With a focus on the habits of the few, Mo explores what made the Iranian people rise up against their government and how this event has shaped the modern world. Listen as we discuss the motivations of the Iranian Revolution and how it has influenced the world today. From geopolitics to human rights, this episode is packed with information that will help you understand the significance of Iran's Revolution. Don't miss it! In the aftermath of a hard-line President Ebrahim Raisi's intensified efforts to enforce Iran’s Islamic laws, even more protests have taken place, this time in the streets of Tehran. The issue at hand is one that has been simmering for decades, but previous reformist leaders’ promises to make changes have done nothing to stop it: women are tired of being subjugated by religious law. In Iran, the most fundamental questions about what makes a society work continue to be debated. While core human rights are being violated, many Iranians want to see change to their government's Islamic policies. --- The Islamic Republic of Iran is a country in Western Asia that is governed by a theocratic Islamic republic. The government is based on the principles of the 1979 revolution, which overthrew the previous monarchy and established an Islamic republic. The supreme leader of Iran is Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who holds ultimate political and religious authority in the country. The President of Iran is responsible for the administration of the country and is elected by the people. The legal system in Iran is based on Islamic law, also known as Shariah law, which is derived from the teachings of the Qur'an and the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad. The constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran states that all laws and regulations must be consistent with Islamic principles. The government of Iran is known for its strict adherence to Islamic principles and its strict control over many aspects of society, including the media, education, and personal behavior. The government has been criticized by some for its human rights record, including its treatment of women, minorities, and political dissidents. However, it is supported by many others, who view it as a guardian of the country's Islamic identity and values. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/habitsofthefew/message

In this podcast interview, I talk to angel investor and co-founder of intelligentchange Alex Ikonn about gratitude, journaling, taking action, dreaming and creating, adversity, success and happiness. I first met Alex in October 2018 at a [conference name] event where he was the keynote speaker. We immediately connected over our shared love of journaling and took a photo together after the event. A few months later, he contacted me about being interviewed for his podcast. The episode is now live! We talk about all sorts of things in this episode including: how journaling helped him during a dark time in his life; why he started writing gratitude lists when he was 15 years old; how journaling can help you grow as an entrepreneur; what it means to dream big; why you should always take action on your ideas; how adversity can sometimes lead to success (and vice versa); how important it is to be grateful for what you have in life; what success really means (hint: it's not money or fame...); why happiness isn't always enough (and what will make you truly happy); what family means to him. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/habitsofthefew/message
In this episode, we talk about the concept of humility, and why it's an important trait for entrepreneurs. I think when you're building a business, if you are going to grow big and if you are going to do something that is actually going to be meaningful in the world, then you need to have a huge ego to convince people and really capture people's imaginations and your own imagination. But once things go wrong, what's amazing is that the bigger you are in your success, the quicker the comeback down. And so the true purpose in entrepreneurship is not how quickly you climb the mountain or how high you go; it's how strong you come back up after something has gone wrong. Learning that nuance between ego and humility, I think, is truly what separates amateur entrepreneurs from professionals. The reality is that we're all afraid to fail. For some reason, in our society, failure is seen as a bad thing. Success comes with so much praise, but failure? So much criticism. I get it. I was once afraid of failing just as much as anyone else. But here's the deal: when you've failed enough times, you start to realize that there's nothing special about failure. It's not the end of the world. It doesn't mean that you are a terrible person. It means that you have made a mistake. And the more you do it, the better at recognizing those mistakes and changing course before it's too late. This isn't just my opinion: there is a science behind this. Research shows that fear of failure keeps us from going as far or as fast as we're capable...and until we can accept failure and use it to our advantage, it will hold us back from bigger success! Iranian security forces have killed at least 326 people since nationwide protests erupted two months ago, the Norway-based Iran Human Rights NGO (IHRNGO) group has claimed. That figure includes 43 children and 25 women, the group said in an update to its death toll on Saturday – saying that its published number represented an “absolute minimum.” Leading Iranian actor Taraneh Alidoosti posted a picture of herself on Instagram without the mandatory hijab to show support for ongoing anti-government protests that kicked off in Iran nearly two months ago. Iranian lawmakers have urged the country’s judiciary to “show no leniency” to protesters in a letter cited by state-run Press TV on Sunday, as thousands of people continue to rally on the streets despite the threat of arrest. Two British-Iranian journalists working in the United Kingdom have been warned by police of a “credible” plot by Iran to kill them, according to their employer, London-based news channel Iran International. Thousands of Iranians protested in the restive south-east to mark a 30 September crackdown by security forces known as “Bloody Friday” as the country’s rulers faced persistent nationwide unrest. We've all been there: something annoying or frustrating happens and as a result we spend the rest of the day in a foul mood. And the additionally frustrating thing is, someone can often know they’re in a bad mood, but be unable to snap out of it. The next time you get into a funk, don't just wait for the dark cloud to lift. There are steps you can take to improve your mood, and the first is to figure out what’s causing it. You alone control your emotions – and that means you control how to improve your mood or when to give in to a bad one. Your mood is an emotion, which means it’s a choice – and just like any other choice, you can learn how to break out of a bad mood and choose positivity over negativity. Getting out of a bad mood isn’t always easy, especially if we feel that we’ve been wronged or disrespected, but with these six tips, it can be done. 1. Change your state Changing your physiology is the fastest way to create a breakthrough in any area of life. Take a deep breath and relax tense muscles. Throw your shoulders back. Adopt a power pose. Smile at yourself in the mirror. Get your heart going with some exercise you enjoy, which is proven to reduce stress. You’ll trick your brain into getting out of a bad mood. 2. Change your focus Where focus goes, energy flows – and if you focus on the negative, that’s what you’ll feel. To quickly discover how to get out of a bad mood, focus on what you want to feel, rather than what you’re currently feeling. To help change your focus, put on your favorite song and dance around. Watch a funny video or feed your mind with inspiring stories or quotes. Music can physically transform your brain, and humor changes your physiology. Smiling, even when you don’t want to, can actually convince you that you have something to smile about. 3. Be grateful Want to know how to improve your mood? Practice gratitude. “Trade your expectations for appreciation and the world changes instantly,” Tony likes to say. When you choose to focus on the positive, you’re not only able to improve your mood at the moment – you’ll notice that you begin attracting more positivity, thanks to the law of attraction. 4. Use visualization Many top athletes and business people use visualization as a powerful way to manifest their goals – including learning how to get out of a bad mood. Visualization is a way to create absolute certainty within your brain and can help you shift your mood by reminding you what matters: your long-term goals, your innermost values and your hunger for an extraordinary life. 5. Meditate The benefits of meditation include reduced stress, better focus and emotional regulation – all of which can help you better unlock how to get out of a bad mood. Think you don’t have time to meditate? It doesn’t take long to see these benefits. A 10-minute priming routine is all it takes to refocus your brain. You can also incorporate 15 minutes of mindfulness meditation in your daily routine. 6. Get support Friends and family are invaluable. If you need a pick-me-up, call a loved one for support. They can help you talk through the problem and refocus on solutions. Strong social relationships can help you be happy in the long-term as well, so taking the time to nurture these relationships is always a good idea. Learning how to break out of a bad mood on demand will help you make better decisions, communicate more effectively, and ultimately crush your obstacles and achieve your goals. You’ll be able to leave emotional baggage behind and focus on what you can control: your beliefs, your mood and your behavior. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/habitsofthefew/message
"If you can focus on being around people you like, genuine interest happens rather easily." John Cerasani’s story is about a self-made man who has found enormous success with multiple business endeavors. The title of the podcast is a nod to a pivotal point in his journey where he left corporate America to work for himself. By putting himself on top of the Org Chart, he was able to not only reap the benefits of increased pay; but also build equity for himself… Not for others. The podcast promises to discuss various lessons he learned along the way, and have an extreme financial focus. All while encouraging listeners to elevate their game and grow. John built an insurance company from his kitchen table after taking the leap and quitting his job at Arthur J. Gallagher. He was in his late 20’s and also found himself honored with 40 under 40 accolades shortly thereafter. Not even 10 years later, he sold that company into Private Equity for an undisclosed multiple. This building of wealth put him in a position to help entrepreneurs with not only capital infusion, but also business advisement and expertise. Working in the distributed computer network operating space, Erapmus helped organizations such as Exxon Mobil and WorldCom integrate and streamline their computer systems. Under my leadership, I instilled a culture of self-reliance and perseverance, successfully growing Erapmus to over 130 employees with revenues of just under $10M before its acquisition. In 2003,I founded Paredigm Enterprises. My ability to formulate a vision, create a strategy, and plan an execution, enables me to guide individuals and organizations to maximize their potential and exceed expectations. From launching robust careers for various authors and speakers, to turning around multiple underperforming companies, to building revenue models and strategic partnerships for non-profits, Paredigm Enterprises has created success for many and has helped to make the world a better place. My cumulative experience brought me to TIGER 21 in 2013, where I was recruited to lead the high-net-worth organization’s peer network in Texas and Puerto Rico.
