Hear about crimes involving the Sale Prison, theft and when mental health was criminalised.    True crime podcasts or episodes usually focus on just murders and missing people but that's not all there is in the field of crimes. Haunted Hills started out exploring a theory that criminals kept the legend going to give them space to keep on distilling illegally, making illegal coins. It shares a little about the small towns, as Robert Kennedy once said "Every society gets the kind of criminal it deserves. What is equally true is that every community gets the kind of law enforcement it insists on."   While I encourage people to play judge and jury, we are not re-adjudicating these crimes most of them occurred too long ago to be appropriate however, these discussions create a contrast of values.

Villisca Iowa's main reported ghost stories come from the ax house, many of the locals don't like this, so I found many ghost stories in the local papers from around that time to see what stories they told each other.    Enjoy.
Villisca Iowa is well known for an ax murder which has never been solved - in the bonus episode on Patreon we look at the lives of the people who were victimised, the witnesses and potential murderers, including the defamation case that sprung out as a result of the finger pointing that went on in town after the shock to this otherwise low crime town - I looked for all types of crimes over the years from 1858 through to 1912 when the ax murder crime occurred. Listen to the crimes and let me know what you thought of the outcomes.   Hear about the other crimes in Villisca Iowa before the tragic ax murders. There was a stabbing on main street, a brutal assault and fraudulent cheques.   Learn more about our advertisers or support us by support them: https://www.hauntedhillstours.com.au/about-haunted-hills-advertisers/   SMALL INFAMOUS TOWNS AND THE BIG STORIES   Enhance your listening experience: https://www.patreon.com/Hauntedhills   Our website: https://www.hauntedhillstours.com.au  Here you can search for what you've heard on our podcast.   Share a story tip or idea: https://www.hauntedhillstours.com.au/share-your-story-with-haunted-hills/   Leave us a voicemail: https://www.speakpipe.com/HauntedHills   Get more Haunted Hills: Hauntedhills.redbubble.com

Villisca is between two tributaries of the Nodaway River, the West and Middle Nodaway Rivers, known as the forks. Probably why it was an attractive place for a town to support local farmers. This town is infamous for the Villisca Axe Murder, a tragedy where 8 people were murdered and no one was ever brought to justice for it.    As with all social history episodes we're going to meet the people because it's the regular people who make the town. So we will meet some farmers, blacksmiths, travellers, and teachers and accountants.
What kinds of crimes had happened in Snowtown before then?
