My Special Guest Is Ruth Roper-Wylde
Ruth is a partially retired Civil Servant, living in Bedfordshire, UK with her husband and dog. Much of her career was spent as an investigator – firstly in Fraud/Theft and later in Bullying/Harassment/Discrimination claims.
She has a lifelong fascination with the supernatural and unexplained, stemming from formative years spent living in a house with an active poltergeist in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. As a hobby therefore over the years, she researched for endless hours on the subject with the idea of eventually writing a book.
She brings a healthy dose of scepticism and desire for scientific explanation to her research and writing, which was instilled by her ever pragmatic mother: who when presented with an inexplicably flying knife in the kitchen, calmly took out a tape measure and measured the length of its flight path.
Seven years ago, when the opportunity to take partial early retirement presented itself, Ruth decided to make her idea of writing a book into reality, and has since published eight books as an independent author:
“The Ghosts of Marston Vale”,
“The Almanac of British Ghosts”,
“These Haunted Times: Volumes One, Two, Three and Four"
“The Roadmap of British Ghosts: Volumes One and Two”.
She is currently writing book 9….which will be These Haunted Times Volume Five - America.

Thomas Lacey was born on November 4, 1895, in Glossop, Derbyshire, England. His journey into the spiritual world began early in life, leading to a lifetime of mediumship. On March 18, 1918, he married Edith Emma Lomas in Whitfield. Edith, born on September 28, 1895, was not a medium herself, but she played a vital role in supporting Thomas's work.
In the early 1920s, the Laceys made a significant move to Canada—settling in the Kitchener-Waterloo region. It was here in 1924 that Thomas began conducting séances, with Edith actively participating.
Throughout the 1960s, Thomas and Edith held séances in the home of Otto and Nelda Smith in Kitchener with attendees reporting experiencing apports, materialisations, automatic writing, and even Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP).
My Special Guest Is Dr. Nick Richbell
Dr. Nick Richbell recently received his PhD in History from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. His area of research is the history of Spiritualism, and his doctoral dissertation is a biographical history about the medium Maurice Barbanell and his guide, Silver Birch. The teachings of Silver Birch are still talked about in Spiritualist churches today, however, Maurice Barbanell’s name is rarely mentioned.
Nick has long believed that there is more to life than an earthly existence. However, it was not until he started work as the Head of Special Collections and Archives at the University of Waterloo Library that he started to further consider the afterlife. The archives had two séance related collections. The Maines-Pincock Family collection holds records of seances conducted by the American medium William Cartheuser in the private home of Jenny O’Hara Pincock in St. Catharines, Ontario. Another collection, the Thomas Lacey Lecture collection contains over 400 lectures given by Lacey while in trance. Nick was able to bring in a new Lacey collection during his tenure at Waterloo: the Thomas Lacey séance collection: over 100 reel-to-reel tapes from the 1960s of recordings of seances conducted by Lacey in a Kitchener, Ontario home. He is often invited to give talks about his research about this magnificent collection. Nick was the research associate on the audio-documentary, The Ghost of Thomas Lacey, produced by Anthroscope Media.
Originally from London, England, Nick is currently the Head of Special Collections and Archives at Clemson University in South Carolina. Prior to moving to South Carolina, Nick oversaw the Special Collections and Archives department at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. He also managed the archives of the Canadian Pacific Railway in Montreal and worked at the McGill University Archives as well as the McGill University Health Centre.
In this episode, you will be able to:
1. Hear clips from Thomas Lacey's seances.

The crash of the R101 airship in 1930 was a devastating disaster, resulting in the loss of 48 lives. In the aftermath, trance medium Eileen Garrett claimed to receive messages from the deceased crew and passengers. These messages suggested design flaws and material failures as the primary causes. While sceptics questioned the validity of her communications, supporters believed Garrett's insights offered a unique perspective on the tragedy, blending the realms of spiritualism and aviation to seek understanding and closure.
My Special Guest Is Sarah Blake
Sarah Blake began Hushed Up History in October 2014 as a way to tell the dark, amusing, surprising, and forgotten true tales hidden inside history's discarded pages. She also drinks way too much tea and has absolutely no regrets about it. If learning about tarot floats your boat she can be found at Twin Crows Tarot on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

Thomas Bradford, a spiritualist in early 20th century Detroit, sought to prove the existence of an afterlife through a unique and tragic experiment. Partnering with fellow spiritualist Ruth Doran, Bradford devised a plan where he would take his own life and attempt to communicate with Doran from the beyond. In February 1921, Bradford was found dead in his apartment, leaving a note detailing his intentions. Despite his tragic end, Bradford's experiment did not produce the hoped-for proof of life after death, but it did ignite public fascination and debate over spiritualism and the mysteries of the afterlife.

Maurice Barbanell (1902-1981) was a pivotal figure in spiritualism, renowned as the founder and editor of "Psychic News," a leading spiritualist publication. His work promoted the spiritualist movement, emphasising the reality of life after death through mediums and psychic phenomena, significantly shaping public understanding and acceptance of spiritualism.

Barbanell spent 61-years dedicated to Spiritualism and Dr. Richbell’s research has started to correct this omission and put’s Barbanell back into the historical discourse about him being the twentieth-century’s leading propagandist of the religion and movement.

In today’s episode we delve into the remarkable rise of supernatural phenomena in post-World War II Germany, a period marked by the extraordinary popularity of faith healers like Bruno Gröning and a wave of witchcraft accusations. Joining us is Monica Black, the acclaimed historian and author of ‘A Demon-Haunted Land: Witches, Wonder Doctors, and the Ghosts of the Past in Post-WWII Germany’. Monica offers a compelling exploration of how a nation, grappling with the aftermath of war and the Holocaust, turned to supernatural beliefs and practices to cope with its collective trauma.
In the wake of the war, Germany saw a resurgence of messianic figures and mystical healers drawing enormous crowds, prayer groups conducting exorcisms, and widespread sightings of the Virgin Mary. This period also witnessed a startling number of witchcraft accusations as neighbours turned against each other in a climate of pervasive fear and suspicion. Monica Black unpacks these phenomena, arguing that they were deeply intertwined with the nation's unaddressed guilt and the haunting silence over its recent atrocities.
Our discussion highlights how these supernatural obsessions reveal a darker, more troubled side of Germany's postwar recovery, often overshadowed by narratives of economic resurgence and democratic rebirth. Monica’s insights, drawn from previously unpublished archival sources, paint a vivid picture of a society struggling with profound moral and spiritual disquiet. This episode is a deep dive into the shadow history of postwar Germany, offering a fresh perspective on the emotional and psychological toll of trying to bury a painful and horrific legacy.

The Great War haunted the British Empire. Shell shocked soldiers relived the war’s trauma through waking nightmares consisting of mutilated and grotesque figures. Modernist writers released memoirs condemning the war as a profane and disenchanting experience. Yet British and Dominion soldiers and their families also read prophecies about the coming new millennium, experimented with séances, and claimed to see the ghosts of their loved ones in dreams and in photographs. On the battlefields, they had premonitions and attributed their survival to angelic, psychic, or spiritual forces. For many, the war was an enchanting experience that offered proof of another world and the transcendental properties of the mind. Between 1914 and 1939, an array of ghosts lived in the minds of British subjects as they navigated the shocking toll that death in modern war exerted in their communities.

Kyle is based in Ontario, Canada.
