Vermonters are a frugal bunch and have been for many generations. In order to save energy during a long, cold Vermont winter, the truly ingenious old-time Vermont natives would find a way conserve food and heat….by freezing their old folks, for the duration of winter, and thawing them out in the spring time! https://vermonter.com/vermonts-deep-frozen-folks/ https://archive.vpr.org/commentary-series/citro-hibernating-hill-folk/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hauntedvermont/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hauntedvermont/support

During a bitterly frigid winter night in the late 1800’s, a fire occurred on the original railroad trestle in Hartford, VT. The Montreal Express, a train with passenger cars carrying 78 people, derailed and burned. Tragically, thirty-six people were crushed, drowned or burned alive, including a boy and his father. To date, this was Vermont’s worst railroad disaster. Over the last two centuries, people with enterprising ideas have envisioned it as a place of business. Four hotel fires later, they were left to wonder: was it coincidence that led to their failure, or the curse of Brunswick Springs? Brunswick Springs is located well off the main road in Brunswick, VT., a town of approximately 100 residents in the Northeast Kingdom. There are six individual springs at the spot, and each allegedly contains a different mineral-iron, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, bromide and arsenic-that flow into the Connecticut River 65 feet below. Pittsford Haunted House, was once known as The Caverly Preventorium or “The Vermont Sanitorium”. Housing 100 patients that contracted the dreaded disease at the time with no cure, tuberculous. It held dark experiments from doctors, and lost fundings eventually leading to it’s closure in 1967. It became part of what is now known as the Vermont Police Academy and then went to the Vermont Fire Department, where even today it is opened to the public during October for their annual Pittsford Haunted House. Back in the fall of 2013, film makers Owen Mulligan and Jay Vos contacted Paul Dulski who runs Haunted Vermont to help find a location to shoot there last and final tale of there film that was released on October 27th 2014, known as DEAD STATIC. The tale takes on the true facts of witnesses claiming to see a small female child staring out on the second floor window. However since it’s a horror film, not everything is true. A copper statue located at Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier, Vermont is that of a male figure, sitting with closed eyes looking upwards, his head covered with a shawl. Like many similar legends, “Black Agnes” supposedly is cursed with the power to some pretty vile things to those who may be tempted to sit on his lap. The list of not so wonderful circumstances include a certain death within seven days and a range of just plain, bad luck. One thing remains a fact. The statue is bestowed with the title “Thanatos” (Greek for the word “death”). John Erastus Hubbard (1847 – 1899) was a Montpelier businessman with enough wealth to have the statue created and watching over his final resting place. John Hubbard was a business man in the Montpelier area in the 1800’s. It was said that he contested and inherited a sizable amount of money from a wealthy aunt, (who had originally left the city of Montpelier a virtual fortune). He set about the task of building a public library for Montpelier, but at about 1/3 of the cost his deceased aunt had intended. Needless to say people in the area considered him greedy and mean spirited. Some of the reported odd occurrences surrounding “Black Agnes” included glowing red eyes at night, blood curdling screams and other creepy noises. Some people believe that the statue was haunted due to the misdeeds and demeanor of Hubbard, while he was still alive. Stories were told about a number of people who dared to sit in the lap of Black Agnes only to be found dead later. Welcome to the Premiere of HAUNTED VERMONT PODCAST, on this debut Episode we learn the History behind the 19th Century Castle. Which is the ONLY REAL one ever built in the heart of the Green Mountains. A place that is still available for weddings, but within these walls. Could one of the Wilson family members still be lingering around? In this Episode I talked with the owner of the castle, Denise and volunteers Andy and Sheila. Also appearing is Steve from South Glens Falls Paranormal Society, and John Dean known for his Terrorealm haunted attractions. ABOUT THE CASTLE: The Castle has been the home of five generations of the Wilson family. It’s design is a blend of European styles. Part of the estate is presently in the Wilson Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization, to preserve its longevity. The facade of the Castle is set with English brick and marble, and is dominated by nineteen open proscenium arches and shadowed by a towering turret, parapet, and balcony. The residence of the 115 acre estate has three floors spaciously divided into 32 rooms. The interior features are highlighted with 84 stained-glass windows and 13 fireplaces finished with imported tiles and bronze. The Castle’s furnishings include Far Eastern and European antiques and museum pieces, complemented by statuary, Chinese scrolls, and Oriental rugs. The various rooms with their distinctive features provide an elegant and richly gracious interior – perfect for the wedding of your dreams. On the grounds are cattle barns, stables, the carriage house, and the glass house and plenty of space in the scenic Vermont countryside. Joining Paul on this Episode is Director, Austen out of Barre, VT. Looking to complete a short mystery video shoot at the Wilson Castle. It seems something may be wanting to put in their "pulls" as well. Mia and Candice have also come onboard to talk about their little mishaps, or at least experiences. As the mishap could have been mistaken for something thrown, and not a "punch."
