This is the 10th episode of the Hen News Podcast! Today, we talk about speaking up, and what you need to consider both as someone who is planning to speak up, and someone who is in a position of power and needing to listen up. Podcast is based on Reitz and Higgins "Speak up" book (2019).

This episode talks about why we struggle to say no, and how we might get better at it. We all need to say no at times, and being able to do it well is a skill. If we understand our thinking, practice, and use a framework with empathy, we can get better over time.

This episode describes a model for giving feedback: ask permission, describe what you saw, say what impact it had on you, ask for response, agree on progress focusing on positives.

Editor talks about a recent National Deaf Children's Society conference that she attended. She describes her trepidations at going, as someone who is not a regular conference attendee. She talks about the brilliant messages around mental health in children and young people with deafness, and stresses importance of positive messages. There is a lot for us all to learn!

Hen News introduces Sue Mazengarb, our airway specialist nurse. Sue has been in the department for many years, and worked as a ward nurse and ward sister before taking up her current specialist nurse role.Sue tells us about her role, which she started from scratch. She has even been mentioned in the CQC report! It is great to see the support that she offers to patients both in and out of hospital.Sue tells us what she does as part of our team, and how she looks after airway patients. She emphasises the importance of team work and collaboration, and how this helps us all work better together for patient benefit.

Editor interviews Kate aka Nurse Doyle. Kate tells us about her travels across the world, visiting other hospitals including in Africa and USA, as part of a scholarship to explore how nurses abroad work.Kate discusses the different skills that nurses in different countries develop, including developing country nurses that have learned to work with few resources, and USA nurses working amongst fantastic equipment.Kate tells us about visiting MAGNET hospitals in USA, and how the MAGNET approach facilitates good staff engagement and morale. She recounts stories of how finances affect USA health care, how insurance companies control clinical practice, and the mountains of paperwork that come with that.She finishes by emphasising the importance of tolerance, inclusivity and diversity.

The Editor introduces Hen News, and reminisces about its origins with Nurse Ricketts. We get to know the Editor and Nurse Ricketts in detail, including the origins of the name "Rickets". We hear about Professor Fox and Chief Rooster, and how the term "Hen" came about.

Resilience describes how we deal with adversity. This episode talks about resilience, mindset, role of our  thinking in how we deal with adversity, and suggests a framework for helping us develop resilience. We are under a great deal of pressure, dealing with complex patients and in challenging settings. Understanding and developing resilience will help us thrive.
