In today's episode we are talking about ableism. If you’re not familiar, here’s what it is: “Ableism is the discrimination of and social prejudice against people with disabilities based on the belief that typical abilities are superior. At its heart, ableism is rooted in the assumption that disabled people require ‘fixing’ and defines people by their disability. Like racism and sexism, ableism classifies entire groups of people as ‘less than,’ and includes harmful stereotypes, misconceptions, and generalizations of people with disabilities.” Things we mentioned in this episode: We talked about one of our favorite leaders, https://www.instagram.com/maysoonzayid/ (Maysoon Zayid), and her book “https://amzn.to/2AebXOK (Find Another Dream)”. The documentary “https://www.netflix.com/title/81001496 (Crip Camp)” on Netflix. https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/netflix-s-crip-camp-one-most-important-films-about-disability-ncna1176456 (NBC News) describes it as “not only as an excellent introduction to disability history for those who are unfamiliar, but as a humanizing glimpse into the lives of civil rights leaders”. The popular YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4E98HDsPXrf5kTKIgrSmtQ (Special Books by Special Kids), interviews people in the neurodiverse/disability community.  What to expect inside the episode: 2:05 - What is Ableism? 3:22 - What has been your experience with ableism and differently abled people and why are you passionate about it? 17:55 - Lizzie, as someone who has a differently abled sibling, what are some real life situations you have witnessed about discrimination and ableism? 27:45 - Fighting for equal rights for differently abled people.  41:15 - Using people first language and why that’s important. 50:00 - We share our Yay for the Day!
