Hortense Mancini with Special Guest Annalisa Nicholson

Hello you Mad Hadders! We have got a great episode for you this week. We were joined for this episode by Annalisa Nicholson to talk about Hortense Mancini, an incredible 17th century aristocratic woman who fled her abusive husband and eventually ended up at the court of her one-time-suitor Charles II of England. For a short while she was the official mistress of Charles II but after having an affair with a number of other people, including Charles’s daughter by another mistress, he decided against it. Hortense held salons, intellectual meetings, where people from all disciplines came together to discuss new ideas without fear of rank or sex getting in the ay of them being allowed to speak. Mary Macarthur

At the turn of the 20th Century, a Scottish lady called Mary Macarthur, became one of the most influential voices in the trade unionist movement. She was instrumental in the realisation of a minimum wage for workers and raised the profile of the plight of low wage workers. Her determination to provide women in female-dominated trades, which were often carried out at home, led to the creation of the National Federation of Women Workers, and their strike action in 1910 led to the actual implementation of a minimum wage.History After Dark is reader-supported.
