Prisons had once been thought of as just holding areas to punish people.  In the late 1800s, a movement started that aspired to a higher ideal of  reform, rather than punishment. Eastern State Penitentiary was built to  launch that reformation in the American penal system. The prison's  edifice is formidable and resembles a castle. This eventually became the  most famous prison in the world. The prison ran for 142 years and today  serves as a museum that offers both historical and ghost tours and  hunts. Officers, inmates, staff and visitors have all reported haunting  activity for decades at the  prison. Join us as  we explore the history and hauntings of the Eastern State Penitentiary! The Outer Banks stretch for 200 miles from southeastern Virginia to Shackleford Banks in North Carolina. The Atlantic that borders its eastern side is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic because of the hundreds of shipwrecks that have occurred here. We traveled much of this stretch on our recent road trip and took in many of the sites while learning about the history and legends of this area. A key figure in history connected to the Lower Islands of the Outer Banks was Blackbeard the pirate. He came to his violent end here. There are numerous haunted locations and legends in the Outer Banks. On this first episode of our Outer Banks Series, we are going to explore the history and hauntings of the Lower Islands! The Moment in Oddity features a castle-like structure part of a Canadian home and This Month in History features the first air conditioner invented. Dr. T. G. Hamilton was a trail blazer in the field of Paranormal Research. Hamilton was a medical doctor and because of his experiences with death, he began to wonder if there was a way that we could figure out what happens to us after we die. Hamilton and his family moved into a large home in Winnipeg and it was here that he carried out much of his research, along with his wife. Their children continued the legacy of peering behind the veil. And perhaps that is why the Hamilton House of Winnipeg, Canada is said to be haunted. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of Hamilton House. Seguin Island is an island off of Maine that has been a part of maritime history long before the American colonies were founded. The island can only be reached by boat, and is home to Maine's tallest and second oldest lighthouse, Seguin Island Lighthouse. This lighthouse is known by its more common name, Seguin Light, and not only dates back to the birth of America, but it carries a rich history that includes a gruesome tale. What has happened at this lighthouse seems to live on, not only through stories, but through spirits as well. The light is always on at this lighthouse. Ep. 545 - USS Yorktown

2024-07-0454:44

We just returned from a road trip through the Outer Banks of North Carolina and along our way, we stopped in Charleston, South Carolina. We've seen the USS Yorktown from afar before, but on this trip, we boarded this magnificent aircraft carrier twice. She was one of twenty-four Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II. Today, the carrier is a museum that not only houses the museum of the Medal of Honor Society and artifacts from her service, but there are rumored to be several spirits on board. Join us as we share the history, hauntings and our experiences on board the USS Yorktown. The Moment in Oddity features Henry "Box" Brown and This Month in History features the death of Jean Moulin. Old Sacramento is known as Sacramento's "Front Porch." The entire sector is protected as a National Landmark and for good reason. Much of California's early history is seated here. The town saw immense growth during the California Gold Rush and with that came death as well. Cholera epidemics swept through and fire and floods destroyed the place more than once. Old Sacramento had to be raised eighteen feet to prevent flooding, leaving behind underground tunnels. These tunnels are said to be filled with spirits and several of the historic buildings that still remain have unexplained activity. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of Old Sacramento. The Moment in Oddity features the FLIP Research Vessel and This Month in History features the Cuyohoga River Fire. Our location was suggested by Brian Pertl. Kilmainham Gaol Redux

Kilmainham Gaol Redux

During the 19th century, jails in any country were places that many people went to die because of the poor conditions. Kilmainham Gaol was no different. The history of Kilmainham Gaol spans over two centuries and holds a place in the annals of Ireland's fight for independence. Today, this immense structure still stands and runs as a museum relaying the stories of hundreds of prisoners who included notable revolutionaries and common men, women and yes, children. And now it seems to be home for the spirits of several of these former occupants. Join us for the history and hauntings of Dublin's Kilmainham Gaol! Many people focus on visiting Amsterdam when they visit the Netherlands. The Red Light District is a place that paranormal enthusiasts may find a ghost or two. There's spooksteeg or "ghost alley" and Bloedstraat, which is Blood Street. But the really promising haunted locations are in the outer areas of the country, the castles. There are stories of Blue Ladies, screaming hunters, dancing ghosts and Faust. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the castles of the Netherlands. Paranormal Conversations are random, off-the-cuff discussions on all things paranormal. On this 21st Paranormal Conversation, we are joined by our listener Clint Hopper. Clint lives in the small town of Troy, Tennessee and his family's roots are deep here. We talk history of the town, Civil War history and battles, some dark history connected to the treatment of blacks after the Civil War, Clint's unexplained experiences at a historic cemetery and slave quarters on a plantation and since Clint is a coon hunter, we couldn't help but ask if he has run into any cryptids out there in the Tennessee wilds. He had a couple of chilling stories about that. We also talk about a World War II hero who was from Troy and just recently passed. If you love southern history, you are really going to enjoy this! Mystic, Connecticut was a seafaring village in the early settlement of America. This was the scene of a horrific massacre that more than likely has left behind a negative spiritual residue. The Hotel Chelsea refers to itself as "A Rest Stop for Rare Individuals" and indeed, it has hosted some famous creatives. I like the content (so far) so I don't want to hear so much goo at the beginning! about 5 minutes of ad, website, non-topic related stuff at the beginning. I've jumped around and listened to a handful of these pods and they're seeming to be that way. please put a time point for topic start point so I can avoid all this stuff that I don't want to hear. thank goodness for a fast forward option.

I like the historical aspect of these podcasts but tend to tune out once they start talking about ghosts and apparitions. I find it funny how ppl always latch on to old asylums and prisons as being haunted just be ause they're spooky places. if ghosts were real, they'd be FAR more common, instead of merely hanging out in places like abandoned prisons and mental asylums. I mean how many people in history have died? lol billions and billions and billions. so if ghosts were real , we'd have far far more around than is currently discussed. I mean shouldn't every battlefield in history be crawling in ghosts? and not just the few places people "claim" to be haunted. I think the Fermi Paradox can be applied to this ghost thing pretty well.

Great listening! <3 another binge-friendly podcast! :D Still examining the catalog - NYC has a handful of haunted houses/ establishments. Some of the more interesting (uncanny/ spooky) stories are the ones concerning apparent time slips in history. Great Southern Mysteries and The Little Giant Book Of "True" Ghost Stories are two fun books to read and try to be accurate concerning names, locations and dates. 🤓 I'm glad I found this podcast (now the graveyard shift won't be so spooky..). it is said that the Rite-Aid @Astoria I work at is haunted by the spirit of an elderly man that had a heart attack and didn't survive while at the pharmacy check-out. It is also said that prior to the location becoming a Rite-Aid it was a morgue... this building has no windows - save the store entrance so it can get quite gloomy. - Andrew
