Recently I had the pleasure of visiting Kensington Palace in London, where Queen Victoria was born and raised. Let’s explore the rooms where she spent her troubled youth, examine the harsh Kensington system under which she was reared, discover a few of her childhood joys and learn what transformed her into a Queen. It has now appairated into 3 more adaptations in Germany, France and Australia. In each version, half of a modern, living couple inherit a historic mansion. After moving in, the woman has a brush with death, which allows her to see dead people. The spirits, thrilled that a living person can interact with them, quickly incorporate her into the various rivalries, romances and hijinks which have been simmering over centuries of co-haunting. High-spirited hilarity ensues. The element which makes this show particularly special for history lovers is that each ghost met their demise in a different era. And people from the past are brought to life, or rather after-life in a unique and humanizing way. Some of the characters are archetypes of classic ghost stories, like the gray lady and headless specter. But all typify important cultural touchstones from the history of each country they are set in. Where the phantoms converge and differ across versions says a lot about how each country views its own history. Royalty 101: Ten hereditary monarchies survive in Europe today; Belgium, Denmark, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, The United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein and Monaco. Each of them pass their thrones within their respective royal or noble family based on different rules. Some give daughters equal right to sons, some bar women and their children entirely. Princes and Princesses may be born into or removed from the line based their religion, if they are raised in the country, who they marry and other factors. Some monarchies have tight laws and successions lines only 10 to 20 people long. While others have lines which include thousands of extended relatives. “As rich as a Rothschild” was a common saying in the gilded age. In 2013, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands stepped down and handed the throne to her son, Willem Alexander. In 2022 Queen Elizabeth II of the UK died at the age of 96 and her son, Charles III inherited the throne. And on January 14th, 2024, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark abdicated in favor of her son, Frederik X. In just over 10 years, the world has gone from three accomplished, popular and long reigning Queens Regnant to zero. That’s right, there are no female monarchs anywhere in the world. The future may be female, but not in the archaic system of hereditary monarchy. However there are several female heirs waiting in succession lines to be the next great Queen regnant. For thousands of years, Emperors of China had harems of dozens or even hundreds of wives. Emperors had the right to select concubines from among the teenage daughters of the nobility or the peasantry. During the Ming dynasty 5,000 beautiful woman were brought from around the country and lined up in front of the palace. They were narrowed down to just a handful who were admitted into the palace and had a chance of spending a night with the emperor. Inside the forbidden city, imperial wives had an intricate system of hierarchy. At the top was the Empress. She was usually chosen for her nobility and political connections. When the emperor died, she could claim the title Empress Dowager, and continue her influence through her son. Below her were consorts, then concubines and maids. The emperor alone had access to all of them, and they were closely guarded by eunuchs. If the Emperor favored a particular concubine for her beauty, brains, or for baring him a son, he had the right to promote her, even to the rank of Empress.
