History of the Bay: James Beasley

Order James Beasley's book "DEEP ROOTED" here: https://jamesbeasleyent.com James Beasley, Jr. describes himself as a third generation criminal, whose notorious family roots in Bayview-Hunters Point go back to the early days of Black migration to San Francisco. His father, great uncles and cousins built their reputation through labor racketeering, heroin dealing, and pimping, but James took advantage of the cocaine boom in the 70s and 80s. He soon became the drug kingpin of San Francisco, associating with Darryl "Lil D" Reed in Oakland and players like Big Dave and Harry-O in Los Angeles. After making millions of dollars, his run came to an end when he became the youngest person charged with tax evasion in United States history and ended up doing 27 years in federal prison. Now that he has been released and transitioned into legitimate business, James is here to tell his story as a cautionary tale to guide other black and brown youth away from the life of crime. -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com -- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Introduction 03:06 Crime families in San Francisco 06:22 Bayview-Hunters Point in the 60s-70s 11:02 Getting in trouble in high school 16:04 Following his dad into the dope game 24:59 C*caine hits the hood 28:26 Competing with the A Team 31:56 Gangster mentality in the family 37:18 Starting the B Team 42:02 Lil D 46:33 Crips & Bloods in the Bay? 50:39 Cars as a status symbol 54:44 Colombian connection 59:39 Felix Mitchell 1:00:43 Shrimp Boy & Chinatown connection 1:04:55 Ron Newt & Michael Jackson 1:07:55 Investing in legal businesses 1:11:08 Tax evasion case 1:16:07 Federal prison 1:20:37 Turf violence in Hunters Point 1:25:09 Advice to the youth 1:33:22 Harry-O and Death Row 1:41:23 Freeway Rick Ross

History of the Bay: Trunk Boiz

The Trunk Boiz is a collective of rappers, producers, singers, and dancers from Oakland who are best known for their regional hit "Cupcake No Fillin." Co-founded by cousins F.A. Tha Jefe and B*Janky, the group got their start recording songs on a home studio, burning CDs, and distributing tens of thousands of mixtapes throughout the Bay Area. They captured the electrifying energy of the Bay during the hyphy movement with songs like "Scraper Bike" that highlighted Oakland's unique culture. Taking advantage of YouTube in its early stages, their music videos were some of the first to go viral. Almost 20 years later, with Kendrick Lamar paying direct homage to them in his "squabble up" video, Trunk Boiz are planning on keeping their legacy going and continuing to make noise in the Bay Area. -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com -- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Intro 04:07 First studios 07:05 Oakland influences 11:07 Forming the group, first mixtapes 20:09 Other members 22:58 The Hyphy Movement 27:49 Sideshows 31:53 Turning down record deals 36:40 Scraper Bikes 49:01 Kendrick Lamar 53:03 Cupcake No Fillin 1:02:31 E-40 & Too Short “B*tch” Remix 1:13:17 Industry setbacks 1:22:43 Thoughts on current Bay music

History of the Bay: Mistah F.A.B.

History of the Bay Podcast Ep. 85: Mistah F.A.B. has been at the center of the Bay Area hip-hop scene since he splashed on the scene as the Crown Prince of Hyphy in the early 2000s. Growing up in North Oakland, FAB's parents were in the street life but pushed him towards a different route. This led him to developing his talent as a rapper, putting out his first album "Nig-Latin" through Straight Hits Entertainment with Jazzy Jim and Gary Archer. History of the Bay: 22nd Jim

History of the Bay Day 10.19.24 - ticket link: https://www.tixr.com/groups/midwaysf/events/history-of-the-bay-113087 -- Transitioning from the streets to the rap game after surviving 9 gunshots, 22nd Jim formerly known as Offset Jim has been on a consistent wave for the last few years. His meteoric rise was supported by appearances with ALLBLACK, who hails from the same Murder Dubs section of East Oakland. Jim credits his success in music to his popularity in Oakland and known authenticity to the gritty street life he portrays in his music. This has led to recognition in the Bay and beyond, including shoutouts from NBA all-star Klay Thompson and Drake's OVO label and clothing line. Feeling like he's accomplished everything there is to do in the Bay Area, Jim is now setting his sights beyond the Bay and looking to take his career even further. -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: historyofthebaypodcast@gmail.com -- Produced by DEO @deo415, videography by @mvp_kingced --- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Intro 01:36 7 years in the rap game so far 04:35 Growing up in Murder Dubs 08:51 Berkeley High 13:29 Getting shot 9 times 17:41 Oakland rap influences 21:34 Starting to rap; “Offset” rap name 29:12 OVO co-sign; Drake vs Kendrick 31:29 Klay Thompson 33:40 Detroit connections 36:11 Limits to the Bay; major labels 41:31 Features 46:02 Upcoming projects

History of the Bay: Anh Phoong

Anh Phoong is a personal injury attorney who has become an icon in the Bay Area and beyond with her massive billboard campaigns and slogan, “Something wrong? Call Anh Phoong.” The child of Chinese-Vietnamese immigrants, Anh had humble beginnings growing up in San Jose and Sacramento. Starting at community college, she made her way towards law school after being inspired to pursue criminal justice. Anh graduated as valedictorian of Lincoln Law School and passed the California bar. After being turned down for a public defender job, she decided to start her own law firm specializing in personal injury. Far from an “ambulance chaser,” Anh has built a successful practice based on her skills as an attorney. When she shrewdly pursued an aggressive billboard campaign during the pandemic, she skyrocketed to success and has now become a ubiquitous personality all across California. -- Sponsored by Stem Social https://stemsocial.io https://instagram.com/stem.social Also sponsored by Lost Soul Courier Collective - call or text (415) 275-1922 for free Narcan delivery in San Francisco https://lostsoulcouriercollective.org For more info contact @traceyh415 -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: historyofthebaypodcast@gmail.com -- Produced by DEO @deo415, videography by @mvp_kingced --- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Introduction 01:41 Parents immigrating from Asia 04:45 Criminal justice 07:48 Dregs’ law background 10:49 Public defender’s office 14:32 Applying to law school 20:36 Representation for Asian American women in law 23:56 Passing the bar exam 27:25 Starting her own law firm 39:19 Personal injury cases 44:50 Billboards 51:32 Expanding the business 56:49 Billboard costs 1:02:37 Becoming an icon 1:06:09 Competition 1:09:29 Putting yourself out there

History of the Bay: Runtz Founders

Yung LB, Joeski and Rozay are three of the founders of Runtz, one of the most popular cannabis brands in history. Their story starts before legalization, when powerful strains like purple, kush, and champagne were still exotic and hard to find. They met through their mutual passions for music and cannabis culture and started touring as the Cookie Boyz, mentored by artists like Berner and The Jacka. Once they met the growers who created the strain that would become Runtz, they innovated new ways to promote, market, and brand a strain that had never been done before. Years later, Runtz is still a premier cannabis strain and has opened up multiple opportunities for entrepreneurship. -- Sponsored by Stem Social https://stemsocial.io https://instagram.com/stem.social Also sponsored by Lost Soul Courier Collective - call or text (415) 275-1922 for free Narcan delivery in San Francisco https://lostsoulcouriercollective.org For more info contact @traceyh415 -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: historyofthebaypodcast@gmail.com -- Produced by DEO @deo415, videography by @mvp_kingced -- Hat by So Fresh Clothing: https://sofreshclothing.com Hoodie by Rebel 8: https://rebel8.com --- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Introduction 04:00 Early strains in the Bay 13:11 Becoming entrepreneurs 28:14 Learning from Berner 33:07 GMO strains 35:41 Legalization 42:57 Creating the Runtz brand 54:25 Early success 01:01:07 Cookies lawsuit 01:07:16 How to build a successful brand 01:11:12 Current projects

Coming out of Richmond, he met his rhyme partner Mack Magic Mike in juvenile hall and started recording his first tapes once he was released. As contemporaries of Too $hort and Freddy B, Calvin T and Magic Mike were early influences to the artists that followed like E-40, Mac Dre and Mac Mall. 40 even signed Calvin to Sick Wid It Records, but his album was never released. Calvin was introduced to the pimp game at age 13, and his rap career was derailed by multiple prison stints. On episode 17, we had Magic Mike tell their story and now we have Calvin T sharing his perspective in his most in-depth interview ever. -- Sponsored by Stem Social https://stemsocial.io https://instagram.com/stem.social Also sponsored by Lost Soul Courier Collective - call or text (415) 275-1922 for free Narcan delivery in San Francisco https://lostsoulcouriercollective.org For more info contact @traceyh415 -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: historyofthebaypodcast@gmail.com -- Produced by DEO @deo415, videography by @mvp_kingced --- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Introduction  02:49 Bars 04:29 Growing up in Richmond 08:06 The pimp game 11:01 Rapping in juvenile hall with Magic Mike 16:47 First tapes 18:38 Early days of rap 21:33 Pimp rap 27:27 Sam Bostic 28:44 Next generations of Bay Area rap  32:58 E-40 35:23 Prison 42:08 Violence in Richmond 44:42 Snoop Dogg repost

When Fillmore went to the federal penitentiary, that led to Frank being in the system and eventually moving from the Bay Area to the East Coast. When he returned to the Bay, Frank started his own rap career alongside the likes of Keak Da Sneak and the Jacka, co-starring on the popular "Dope Game" series on Rah Records.
