I’m sure you have heard the phrase in church about having Wholehearted Devotion to Jesus. I heard it again this week at church and I found myself agreeing with it, yet not being sure what it means and how to do that. Our hearts are so divided between our family and friends, our hobbies and our desires. Then you throw in verses like Psalms 86:11 that says to “Unite my heart to fear Your name.” How can we say with all integrity that we are wholeheartedly devoted to Jesus with so many things tugging on our affections? People all around the world know the emergency phone number for their country. It is 911 for those of us in North America, I believe it is 999 in the UK, and 112 in Europe. We know that you only dial those numbers when you need emergency services like an ambulance, or the police, or the fire department. Unfortunately many people have a 911 relationship with Jesus. They only call on Him when they are in an emergency. Yes, Jesus will be there for you when you are in a crisis, but He is much more than a 911 Jesus. A sinkhole does not start out as a huge hole in the ground. It starts with a bit of erosion of the foundation underneath that over time, causes the surface to finally sink. Our faith can also be eroded, not usually by the big issue of life, but by having our foundation erode over time.
