Liver Transplant Recipient shares his Story More info on Ben Babb: My name is Benjamin Babb. I received a liver transplant on September 15, 2021. In December of 2020 I tested positive for Covid. After a few weeks of being ill I was surprised that I wasn't getting better. A few months later, a friend of mine made me go to the hospital. They diagnosed me with end stage liver disease and gave me approximately 6 years. I was given a paracentesis and, after a week, I was sent home. Around one month later I went back to the hospital with similar symptoms as before. The G.I. doctor informed me that my health had significantly declined. On March 1st I was told that it was likely that I would be gone by August if I didn't receive a transplant. I reconnected with my family and let them know I was sick. I really wanted to die anyway, so I was content. My mother asked me not to die before her. I decided that I needed to change my mindset. I had some reasons to stay alive. I went to Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute. They worked with me to get on the list. They informed me that along with my lifestyle, my liver failure was caused by a genetic disorder called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. They told me to go to alcoholics anonymous. There I met some fellow transplant hopefuls and recipients who told me about TRIO. I learned a ton from them and fell in love with the community.
