Gone Girl (2014)

2024-10-0202:35:11

Check your red panty inventory and hide that bottle of Chardonnay because we're discussing David Fincher's exceptional adaptation of Gillian Flynn's bestseller Gone Girl in the third week of our Anniversaries and Diva Worship theme. Be a "Cool Girl" and give us a listen! Join us as we dig into the origins of the Flynn's source novel before going all in on this 2.5-hour juggernaut of a film (and yet it flies by???). From Rosamund Pike's Oscar-nominated performance to the accusations of of misogyny, there's no shortage of things to discuss in this densely plotted film. Plus: Carrie Coon (and Missi Pyle!) worship, atrocious accent attempts and thoughts on the Outback Steakhouse, treasure hunts and world class vaginas. Questions? Comments? Snark? Birth (2004)

Birth (2004)

2024-09-2502:04:03

It's a 'Joe pick' for the second week of our Gay Icons & Anniversaries theme as the boys discuss Jonathan Glazer's modern classic Birth (2004). Starring Nicole Kidman as a woman grieving her dead husband, Birth was a lightning rod for controversy, but it's so much more than its bathtub scene and reincarnation plot. Plus: why Bright's casting prompted a complete script rewrite, ties to Rosemary's Baby, a superb Anne Heche, and the two minute long take that should have earned Kidman an Oscar nom. This is a gay masterpiece, people! References: > "Revisiting Jonathan Glazer’s Birth, 20 years on." Dazed > Stephen Gillespie. Revenants of Memory: An Analysis of Glazer’s Birth. With the recent cancellation of PLL, we're releasing our Patreon exclusive on season 2 of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin......Pretty Little Liars: Summer School (spoiler alert: summer school isn't really important this season). Join us as we go through the many, many characters the show has, discussing what worked and what didn't about the many, many subplots crammed into this season's 8 episodes. A lot of it works! And a lot of it doesn't. Plus: the "fandom's" hate for Noa, punny business names, this season's MVPs and that/those killer reveal(s). Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Put away that Thai food and get ready to be lime green Jell-O because we're celebrating our 300th episode with a month-long theme of gay icons and anniversaries! And what better way to kick things off than by revisiting a film we covered in one of our earliest episodes? That's right, it's time to revisit Jennifer's Body (2009)! Tagging in for the conversation is Mae Shults, the co-host of the Lady Killers Podcast! Join us as we begin this super-sized, 3-hour episode (yes, really) by doing a proper deep dive into the film's production history (our format has changed a bit since we discussed it way back in 2019), including a lengthy conversation about the public shaming Megan Fox endured after she made some comments about Michael Bay. Plus: script leaks, "Twilight for boys," a lesson in polyamory, wetties, afterbirth prom dresses and so much more. When all is said and done, we can finally cross out Jennifer's Body! Questions? Hide your cat and don't say zombie because we're talking Colm McCarthy's 2016 adaptation of M.R.Carey's YA novel, The Girl With All The Gifts. Along for the ride is returning guest Carolyn Mauricette! Anchored by great performances from Glenn Close and newcomer Sennia Nanua, this dystopian "hungries" film is surprisingly complex, especially its dark/happy ending. Plus: celebrating black girls, The Last of Us comparisons, comparisons to the book, and Melanie's young queer love for Ms. Justineau. Questions? Comments? Snark? Is there something in the water? We're back with another queer horror indie tackling conversion/aversion therapy. This time it's writer/director Quinn Armstrong's trilogy opener, The Exorcism of Saint Patrick (2024). C/W: suicide This one is doing its own thing, from great gore effects to beautiful exterior shots and even a fat gay teen main character (yay diverse representation!) Questions? Comments? Snark? Beetlejuice (1988)

Beetlejuice (1988)

2024-09-0402:20:28

To tie into Tim Burton's new sequel, we're revisiting the 1988 classic Beetlejuice. Trace has a funny backstory with the film, while Joe barely has a connection to it. We both agree, however, that the film is a creative triumph, with amazing characters and boundless background details that flesh out the world. Plus: multiple queer elements, the film's obsession with suicide, the animated cartoon and the musical adaptation, and why Delia is *the* best character. Reference: Tori Williams. Repress that gay demon and avert the aversion therapy because we're discussing Ganymede (2024), a queer thriller that we quite liked! When a small town wrestling star develops a crush on an openly gay classmate, all Hell breaks loose when he begins seeing visions of a demonic ganymede. Featuring affecting lead performances from Pablo Castelblanco and Jordan Doww and over-the-top performances from David Koechner and Robin Lively (Teen Witch), Ganymede is a bit all over the place, but we think the pros outweigh the cons. Joe sits down to chat with Ariel Powers-Schaub about her new book, Millennial Nasties, which looks at a particular subgenre of horror from 2000-2010s. Critters (1986)

2024-08-2801:49:36

Hop out of that toilet and repair that slingshot because we're headed to the cozy little town of Grover's Bend, Kansas to meet up with some Krites in Stephen Herek's 1986 horror comedy Critters (can you believe it's Joe's first time???). Join us as we go deep into the production of this film that's absolutely not a ripoff of Gremlins (seriously!) before diving into the hilarious antics of the titular toothy furballs and the adventures of the Brown family. Plus: a discussion of "toned films," not-so-bratty-Brad (Scott Grimes), bowling alley shenanigans and one absolutely hilarious use of subtitles. Questions? Comments? Snark? Pack your bags and grab that promise ring because we're discussing Danishka Esterhazy's (Slumber Party Massacre '21) Tubi Original slasher Killer Body Count! This one is a bit of a mixed bag, as there are several great moments sprinkled throughout its unnecessarily long 2-hour runtime, but the gore is good and the cast is game, so you could do a lot worse on a Friday night! when I first watched this film (shown to me as a closeted nb by an out nb in uni) I instantly sensed that the vampire was mtf and had a traumatic background with that. to hear you guys give the background from the book and find that it is indeed the case, makes me feel validated for my interpretation of the film

Just found you <3 So the Descent*...I am a Juno sympathizer as well...Especially when people say she murdered Beth...Beth snuck up behind someone who was literally just processing that they just fought for their life against a cave creature that killed her friend Holly. Her reaction was pure instinct and natural to go directly on an offensive. Would love to talk more about Juno!
