In this episode Mark Zepp joins Steve in remembering hunter, breeder, trainer, author, innovator and entrepreneur John Wick of Montgomery City, Missouri.“He was Elvis,” Zepp opines in this up-close look at perhaps the most influential man to ever snap a leash on a hound. Through his endless ads and columns in coon hunting magazines, Wick single handedly tackled the task of educating the coonhound masses on the nuances of the sport that one major dog food company called the largest sporting dog activity in America. Zepp worked, traveled and hunted alongside John Wick for ten years at Wick Outdoor Works which at the time was the leading supply company for coon hunters nationwide. Nobody in the coon hunting game knew Wick better nor was more closely associated with the most recognizable name in the coonhound sport than Zepp. This episode explores the many aspects of this amazing man’s life from the viewpoint of one that knew him best. Listeners will appreciate this inside look at a very special man indeed. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. In this episode Steve talks with North Carolina’s Mark Miller.Mark is a veteran raccoon hunter that has long been devoted to the Treeing Walker breed. Mark’s Walker hound Dreamer was voted into the Southeastern Treeing Walker Association’s Hall of Fame as a coonhound. Through Miller’s association with North Carolina State Trooper Brad Hyatt who runs Plott dogs on bears, he became interested in Plotts, North Carolina’s official state dog. How does a houndsman devoted to a given breed, especially on that has been particularly successful with that breed, make the decision to try another breed, moving from the most popular among United Kennel Club’s seven coonhound breeds to a breed that has the fewest dogs in the registry? This episode tells the story in detail including a discussion on the differences in the two breeds and why Miller was persuaded to switch. Enjoy dog talk at its finest in this interesting conversation. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. I finally drew an elk tag but not in Montana like I had been putting in for, it was in Wyoming. First timers luck one would say, as this hunt unfolds there is a lot of first timers luck. If you’re into steep climbs, sudden encounters, and the raw, unfiltered adrenaline of the chase. Not just a hunt —but a high-stakes pursuit where every moment counts. Don’t miss out on this episode — it's a front-row seat to the intensity, challenge, and thrill of chasing elk deep in Wyoming’s backcountry. In this episode Steve takes an inside look at the hound sports by exploring the things that radiate from within the soul of the hunter, from the emotional side. Houndsmen may display a plethora of emotions, the usual suspects being jealousy, envy, greed along with often being overly competitive. But there’s a soft underbelly to the sport that macho men may be reluctant to admit, much less talk about. Steve delves into feelings of pride, self-centeredness, disappointment, exhilaration, and even disgust that often comprise the houndsmen’s personality, making it difficult to form and maintain meaningful relationships with other members of the sport. Feelings of love and adoration for hounds as well as grief when a good hound is lost come under Steve’s emotional microscope in this introspective episode. In this episode Steve laments the loss of an old friend, a monthly visitor to which he contributed a fairly large portion of his working career, a friend whose blank pages Steve turned, each month, into essays, exposes and bites of entertainment for thousands of hound-hungry subscribers over a nearly fifty-year history. UKC announced recently that it will no longer publish their house organ Coonhound Bloodlines after the first of the year. The episode also contains a White River Refuge 2025 preview, a letter from old friend Bubba Back Home, a report on Ghost the wonder dog and a congratulatory message to the brand new UKC World Champions. The episode concludes with a tutorial on coon skinning for those wishing to take a Foxfire-type approach to coon hunting the way Deddy did it. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. Too often we put too much focus on the end result of catching game. But the process itself is just as valuable, sometimes even more so. If the process is done correctly the end result is just the icing on the cake. If done properly it makes the end result much more gratifying. The journey is built on the bond forged during this time. Pup training advice constitutes the remainder of the episode laced with vignettes from prior UKC World Championships, an event that concluded its 47th year with the competition of this year’s finals just two days prior to the airing of this podcast. In this episode, admittedly one of the hardest to produce in his 320-plus podcast career, Steve begins with a musical tribute to recently assassinated Christion activist Charlie Kirk. The song written and performed by Oklahoma singer/songwriter Tennessee Jet (aka T.J. McFarland), was penned shortly after Kirk was shot while debating students on a Utah college campus. The impact of the Kirk slaying sent shockwaves across the nation and impacted our host and his guests, Nubbin Moore and Randy Fielder as well as millions across the Nation. After the tribute, the episode moves on to the podcast’s benchmark “Dog talk at its finest” as the boys discuss favorite hounds of the past, Nubbin’s recent family fishing and hunting trip to south Alabama and a look-back at the recent Autumn Oaks event in Indiana. With scarcely two months to go until their annual trip to the White River National Wildlife Refuge, the conversation naturally drifts out to the big Delta bottoms of Arkansas. This one is dedicated to the memory of patriot Charlie Kirk. May he rest in peace. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. Steve is joined by his brother Randy as they entertain fellow West Virginian Nathan Johnson as this week’s guest.Johnson, from the town of Rock View in Wyoming County, has never hunted in any other place than southern West Virginia where he, as were the Fielder brothers, was born and raised. The conversation centers upon what it’s like to hunt in the rugged environs of coal-mining country and why, in fact, would anyone want to hunt in an area that has been named one of the worst states in the Union for coon hunting? The boys agree that it takes a certain hunting style for a coonhound to be successful in the rugged terrain and provide the listener a detailed description of hunting there. As the month of October approaches, the discussion moves to raccoon season, the abundance or lack thereof of raccoons in the area, preferred hunting methods, and their individual positions on taking game in areas where the species is not always in good supply. This is West Virginia dog talk at its finest with one of the finest hunters to have occupied our guest’s chair for an interview. Sit back and enjoy this trio of mountain boys having a good time talking dogs. You’ll especially enjoy Johnson’s one-liners as the conversation stays on the lighter side. In this episode we talk to fellow podcaster, master dog trainer Heath Hyatt. Heath wears many hats in the dog world and was one of the featured judges in one of many coonhound shows that are an important part of the Autumn Oaks calendar of events. Autumn Oaks, founded in 1960 is billed as The Event Where History is made do to its role as the major United Kennel Club-sponsored coonhound event of the year. Also joining Steve in this episode are three members of the Muncy family known for the YouTube videos they have produced in recent years, first as Muncy Outdoors and more recently, Boneyard Outdoors, named for the area in West Virginia from which the family trio originates. Father Josh and sons Bryson, 19 and Peyton, 16 enjoy coon hunting together and after a lengthy hiatus, are back online with their new series. These interviews were conducted on Friday at Autumn Oaks and will be followed by more of the same from Saturday’s events. This was a good podcast. I'm glad to see there's other people out there keeping notes on weather and the conditions that they're trailing and tracking in. There's a book called The Long walkers where Jerry goes into temperature and Frozen conditions and how that affects trailing. Quite a while ago when I lived in Montana I saw exactly what he was talking about when moving from a Western slope to an Eastern slope on an iced over track. Down here in southern Utah temperature plays much more of a factor than anything during the winter. When it starts out in the teens in the mornings there's not much scent for the dogs and as it warms up in the afternoons to the high 50s they can run tracks that are several days old. I call it chasing ghosts tracks that you'll never catch. I find that the substrate that the track was left on also has a huge impact on how the dogs can move it. One of the areas I hunt is very sandy the dogs move through it very slowly but once the track hits the rocks they c
