Description
In this new original series from Somethin' Else, Claudia Winkleman and Professor Tanya Byron identify struggles faced by real-life parents and family members by inviting them in and hearing their story, in a one-time unscripted session with a real person. Claudia listens in to the conversation to discover how Tanya begins to unlock the story behind the issue and help find solutions.
With topics ranging from parental estrangement, gender identity, domestic violence, trauma, inheriting mental health issues, family dynamics after cancer and raising a severely disabled daughter, How Did We Get Here? is a passionate, insightful and moving experience with clear outcomes to each episode.
This podcast doesn’t tell people how to raise their children, or reconnect with family members, rather it helps people understand why, as perfectly competent adults, they can’t put into practice what they know they should do.
Each episode passes on useful links and contacts which listeners can find in the programme notes.
This is a Somethin' Else production.

When is the podcast coming back?!
wow what a story, I get night terrors, people don't understand, oh just have a hot drink, oh try a hot bath. I'm glad George has children. I'm more of an introvert, I hope George improves more and more, to George's friend ,well done. and well done for talking George
This is such a brilliant podcast. I’ve listened to all the episodes now. Such an uplifting podcast!I’m a therapist myself and been working in mental health for years. It’s been a hard year. I feel I learn so much from listening to Tanya in action. You are both doing such a brilliant job and shedding a much needed light on so many difficult aspects of being human. Please, keep going with this brilliant podcast! Ps. And I agree to have an episode where Claud is accepting a compliment.
I love this series so much. I always take something away from the stories. Please do some follow up conversations!
love this thoughtful and compassionate programme. Big acknowledgement to all contributors, it takes courage to share your vulnerability and your story. I'd love to hear what happened next.
I absolutely love these podcast episodes but I cant access the transcript notes. message is telling me to download something called git-hub. Can you point me in the right direction please Many thanks Christine
I'm glad I listened to this, as my behaviour is very much like the lady with the illness. Thanks for the session as I need to change my prescription too...
Amazing episode about an amazing guy. Gary was so open and honest. I hope he gets further help to dislodge those final few 'bullets'
So so glad the podcast is back. It’s one of my favourites. So thought provoking-and no matter the persons issue theres always thoughts and perspectives that seem relevant to me. What an amazing first episode. Gary is truly a hero-and an example of how someone so selfless, who gives all they have to others can so easily fail to know how amazing they are. It’s a constant failing of society-who cares for the carers?
Loved this session, it was so helpful for me as a parent, and the advice was awesome! Well done ladies!
Thank you both for sharing your insight and wisdom so generously. Please keep producing these brilliant episodes.
I absolutely love this podcast. thank you for creating. super helpful!
This is an amazing podcast and would be extremely helpful to anyone with everyday life and emotions. Well done and thank you xx
wow!, that was amazingly powerful!, and it gave me extraordinary insight into my own situation, my thanks to Sally for being so brave to open up like that
wow...thank you and well done Karen x
I listened to the episode last. All of the podcasts have been fascinating but this one really affected me. My son has multiple disabilities (diagnosed) but many of the ideas discussed have had a huge impact on our lives and continue to do so. Real shame there isn't more help for parents. Big hugs to Natasha. xx
I absolutely love your pop cast. I've learnt so much listening to Dr Tanya talk to your guests. Please keep the weekly podcasts coming. Thank you
I never want this podcast to end. It's my favourite thought provoking listen and the highlight of my commute. Tanya and Claudia and their lovely friendship come across as genuine and caring. 'No-one breaks on my watch' I totally believe it!! Thank you
This podcast series is one of the best I've listened to, thank you ❤️
Thank you for this insightful and incredibly helpful podcast. Even though each individual issue may not be relevant to me personally, following the process in each session has been revelatory and somehow liberating for me. Please continue this important work and I recommend it highly to anyone who is curious and perhaps even perplexed about their own behaviours and ways of being in the world. Thanks again, just love it! Bronwyn
