Title: Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow Author: Jerome K. Jerome Narrator: Peter Joyce Format: Unabridged Length: 5 hrs and 3 mins Language: English Release date: 11-08-10 Publisher: Assembled Stories Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 9 votes Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: Over 100 years since it was first published Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow addresses subjects which are still relevant today perhaps more so! Being hard up, being in the blues and being in love are just some aspects of the human condition on which Jerome K. Jerome reflects in his unique whimsical fashion. These insights are not given for the benefit of our education however, for as he says in his introduction, This book would not elevate a cow. I cannot consciously recommend it for any useful purpose whatsoever. All I can suggest is, that when you get tired of reading the best hundred books you may take this up for half an hour. It will be a change! About Assembled Stories: Over the years the national press have reviewed Assembled Stories titles as "excellent", "remarkable", "entrancing", "superb", "magic for sure", "masterly", "wonderful", "a class act" and "a splendid example of audio at its best". Critic Reviews: "Peter Joyce is the most remarkable one-man band in audiobook publishing. Joyce, an experienced actor, reads them all himself." (The Independent)

Title: The Forsyte Saga, Volume 4 Author: John Galsworthy Narrator: Peter Joyce Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 36 mins Language: English Release date: 01-20-11 Publisher: Assembled Stories Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 15 votes Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: It is 1899. Old Jolyon has long since been buried at Robin Hill, and with the death of Aunt Susan in 1895 and Rogers funeral opening this instalment of the Saga, the Forsytes are fast becoming aware of their mortality. Yet more problems beset the family. Montague Dartie leaves his wife for Buenos Aires to pursue his latest flame, a dancer. Young Jolyons wife has died and his father entrusted him as executor of his will, ensuring that Irene receives the interest on the sum the old man left her. Motor cars are beginning to fill the streets of London, and war with the Boers is about to be declared. Soames is now 44 years old, separated from Irene for 12 years and yearning for a son to whom he can leave his property. He meets and begins to woo Annette. Could she give him an heir? At first, he favours the idea and prepares to seek a divorce, but meeting Irene again rekindles that desperate, unfulfilled passion. Why should she not come back to him? He informs Jolyon of his intentions, asking the artist to kindly leave her quite alone; I can give you no such promise comes the firm reply, and the battle begins in earnest. Critic Reviews: "Peter Joyce is the most remarkable one-man band in audiobook publishing. Joyce, an experienced actor, reads them all himself." (The Independent) Family sagas, from Icelandic to Aga, have diverted readers for centuries, but the Forsytes remain the brand leaders. The clever thing about this edition is that it comes in small, easily digestible portions. Peter Joyce, whose rhetorical resonance is perfect for his subject, has divided the saga into nine volumes, each lasting around five hours. Listen for yourselves. It was the dialogue that had me constantly rewinding. their lives are eminently and endlessly fascinating. (The Guardian)

Title: Lorna Doone [Audio Connoisseur] Author: R. D. Blackmore Narrator: Charlton Griffin Format: Unabridged Length: 28 hrs Language: English Release date: 11-08-12 Publisher: Audio Connoisseur Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 10 votes Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: Lorna Doone is one of the greatest love stories ever written; and for a long time, it was the most popular. Written in the heyday of the great Victorian novelists, in 1869, it proved to be an enduring tale and made its author rich and famous. This is the story of John Ridd, a yeoman farmer of the border country in southwest England. Set in the turbulent late 17th century, amid political tensions aroused by the religious animosities of a nation that had just emerged from the Commonwealth government of Cromwell, the story follows the adventures of John Ridd and his love, Lorna Doone, an aristocratic beauty who was kidnapped by the Doone family as a child. How John Ridd meets Lorna, wins her love, rescues her from the clutches of the Doone clan, and tries to keep her safe constitutes the bulk of the plot. The entire novel is told from John's point of view in the first person. Lorna Doone dramatizes two of the crucial issues of the Victorian era: country life versus city life, and the values of the individual set against the authority of the state. In John Ridd we see the epitome of the rising middle class set against a parasitical aristocracy represented by the Doones.

Ebenezer Scrooge, described as "a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner," is certainly no lover of the Christmas season. He is visited on Christmas Eve by the ghost of his former partner, Jacob Marley, who warns him that he will be visited by three further spirits: The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come. A heart-warming story of one man's redemption, populated with many memorable and well-loved characters, which also offers a wonderful glimpse of mid-19th Century Christmas traditions.

Title: The Haunted and the Haunters Author: Edward Bulwer-Lytton Narrator: Jim Killavey Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 34 mins Language: English Release date: 10-24-17 Publisher: Jimcin Recordings Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: Edward Bulwer-Lytton was an English novelist, poet, playwright, and politician. He was immensely popular with the reading public and wrote many best-selling novels. He coined the phrases "the great unwashed", "pursuit of the almighty dollar", "the pen is mightier than the sword", and "it was a dark and stormy night". "The Haunters and the Haunted" is both a wonderful ghost story and a well-crafted example of Bulwer-Lytton's theory of the supernatural. It represents nearly 20 years' study of paranormal phenomena. On the one hand, it is a chilling tale of ghosts and terror, but on the other, it illustrate the author's theory "that the Supernatural is Impossible, and that what is called supernatural is only a something in the laws of nature of which we have been hitherto ignorant." For him, though, the laws of nature include "the power that in the old days was called Magic, a power of the human will that can affect mental and physical reality and produce the apparently supernatural."

Stevenson Narrator: Peter Newcombe Joyce Format: Unabridged Length: 7 hrs and 30 mins Language: English Release date: 10-18-17 Publisher: Assembled Stories Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: Victorian humour generally doesn't translate well across time. The Wrong Box is one of the exceptions. The plot revolves around the supposed death of Joseph Finsbury, who, as a youth, with his brother Masterman, joined a tontine - a scheme whereby each entrant pays a fixed amount and the sum total, with interest, is given to the one who lives the longest. At the beginning of the story, there are three survivors and then two - the Finsbury brothers. Joseph is guardian to two boys and a girl, Morris, John and Julia. He was responsible for the boys' legacy of 30,000 and invested it unwisely in his failing leather business. The money has all but disappeared, and on reaching adulthood they want their inheritance back! Uncle Joe must be kept alive at all costs. Then there is a train crash.... The novel was either ignored or strongly criticised when first published, not least one suspects because of the irreverent attitude to death and its attendant rituals, subjects which commanded huge respect and veneration almost amounting to obsession from the Victorians. It is, however, a hugely entertaining story with a convoluted, complicated plot that can defy comprehension - but it is of no matter! A cast of gloriously eccentric characters certainly had a comic effect on one notable literary figure of the period. "I laughed over it dementedly when I read it. That man [Stevenson] has only one lung but he makes you laugh with your whole inside." (Rudyard Kipling)

Ballantyne Narrator: Peter Newcombe Joyce Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 48 mins Language: English Release date: 10-12-17 Publisher: Assembled Stories Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: Robert Michael Ballantyne was one of the most popular adventure story writers during Victoria's reign. He strongly believed that boys should grow up taking risks, and his hero, Martin Rattler, certainly has a thrilling time in this tale. Aunt Dorothy Grumbit thinks him a very bad boy, but Martin possesses all the manly virtues that one expects from a Ballantyne hero, and the story has all the traditional elements of a rollicking yarn: jolly jack tars, pirates, shipwreck, travel up the Amazon, diamond mines and capture by savage tribes.

Title: John Halifax, Gentleman Author: Dinah Craik Narrator: Peter Newcombe Joyce Format: Unabridged Length: 22 hrs and 57 mins Language: English Release date: 09-29-17 Publisher: Assembled Stories Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: The greatest romantic narrative novel of the early 19th century, John Halifax, Gentleman tells the story of an orphan boy whose first words in the story are, 'Sir, I want work; may I earn a penny?' By hard work, diligent study and an unshakeable faith in his God, John attains wealth and happiness, despite much hardship and heartbreak throughout his life. The story chronicles the class movement of the time and gives us a remarkable description of social, political and industrial change. Set in Gloucestershire in the heart of England and told by Phineas, his soul mate and lifelong friend, who observes John through all his glorious moments, self-doubt and resolution, the story is simple, uplifting and heroic. It is a detailed study of a man and his family that also presents the listener with a broad view of Britain during one of its most troubled times. A genuine classic, most entertaining and certainly a tale which lives up to the appellation, epic in its conception and delivery. John Halifax, Gentleman was first published in 1856. This is the first unabridged recording of Dinah Craik's masterpiece.
