Presidential Money Lessons w/ Megan Gorman #881

Wondering who you should vote for? Well we’re finally going to share our presidential recommendations!... Psych. And we’re actually not even going to get into recent presidential money stories like tax returns or whether candidates own any stocks or other shady business deals. In fact, we’re going to completely avoid the mud-slinging landscape that we find ourselves in today, and instead, we’re going to focus on personal finance, which is what we do best! And fortunately for us we’re joined by author Megan Gorman. Megan is a history buff, she began her career at Goldman Sachs, and then founded her own firm specializing in tax and financial planning for high-net-worth individuals. She’s a senior contributor to Forbes, is regularly quoted in the Wall Street Journal, and her new book “All the Presidents Money”, looks at the men who governed America in order to learn how they governed their money. For instance Jefferson buying wine on credit, John Adams take on having money conversations with your partner… listen as we cover the financial lessons we can all learn from Lincoln, Truman, JFK, and more during today’s episode!   Want more How To Money in your life? From Poverty to Prosperity w/ SheWolfeOfWallStreet #878

Our guest today is Amanda Wolfe, better known as the SheWolfeOfWallStreet, and we’re grateful to have her share her story with us. Amanda was born into extreme poverty – not “I had a rough month after college so I slept in my car”, but more like “begging for food at gas stations” poverty. Her upbringing had a profound impact on her view of money and caused her to become a self-taught financial educator who has built a community of over 300,000 folks. She now helps countless families create debt payoff strategies, budget, and invest! Amanda is all over Instagram helping individuals achieve financial freedom, but how did she do it? What happened between those two extremes of poverty and prosperity? We’re excited for her to share her story, what she originally believed was a ticket to the middle class, how she learned to actually accumulate wealth, her take on side hustles, her relationship to money today, and much more!   Want more How To Money in your life? Peering Inside the Finance Industry w/ Josh Brown #875

Our guest today has been called one of the greatest financial writers of all time. And it’s no wonder – Josh Brown started his original blog, The Reformed Broker back in 2008 as he now continues to write over at DowntownJoshBrown.com.  And his latest book “You Weren’t Supposed to See That: Secrets Every Investor Should Know” just came out yesterday in which he reveals the hidden truths that make the critical difference between understanding the world and being dangerously naive. Josh co-hosts The Compound and Friends podcast where they discuss current market trends and financial strategies. And in all of his extra time, he is the manager of billions of dollars as CEO of Ritholtz Wealth Management. During our conversation today he shares why Gen Z might make more successful investors, taking a “core and explore” investing strategy rather than a simple indexed approach, what direct indexing is all about, and much more!   Want more How To Money in your life? Investing is Risky. Do it Anyway w/ Jesse Cramer #872

“Looking to the long-term upside potential of changing jobs” and “the ways that an overly pessimistic point of view can derail your life”, were just a couple of our big takeaways from talking with our friend Jesse Cramer, from The Best Interest. At his core, Jesse is a financial educator who strives to break down the bigger and nerdier personal finance topics into nuggets of wisdom that all can learn from. In fact, he loves personal finances so much that he stepped away from a lucrative and stable job as an aerospace engineer, in order to join a fiduciary fee-only wealth management firm. We discuss what kind of cojones it takes to start your own business, his alternative to a pure 529 approach to saving for college, how and why an overly conservative portfolio will crush you, what percentage of Social Security he thinks we can count on, and much more!   Want more How To Money in your life? Dirt Cheap Travel w/ Trip of a Lifestyle #869

Unfortunately a LOT of us view traveling as a luxury. It’s something that isn’t necessary, and so because of that we choose to delay our vacations, which means that we’re actually not all that good at traveling when the time finally comes. It’s like any activity we perform infrequently – we probably suck at it! And to make matters worse, if we see travel as a luxury good, that also means we think it’s necessary to spend a ton of money on it as well, which our guests today have completely disproven. We’re joined by the couple behind Trip of a Lifestyle, Lauren and Steven, who are going to share how they travel on the cheap. Here’s a quick and dirty summation of some of their notable milestones: they embarked on a 45 day road trip after college, then rather than honeymooning in Hawaii for a week they stuck around for six months. Shortly after that they purchased their first home, in cash, all while making less than $100,000 combined! They’ve traveled abroad, visited every national park in the US, and they both retired from their full time jobs at age 29. Listen as we discuss everything from menu hacks while on the road, to bigger discussions around giving yourself “permission” to pursue the kind of life that excites you!   Want more How To Money in your life? Saving Big at the Supermarket w/ Consumer Reports' Brian Vines #866

The results from our survey are in, and it turns out that everyone’s gotta eat!.. Groceries are a universal expense and you likely have felt the increased pressure on your wallet over the past few years. Prices at the supermarket have increased over 26% from 2019 to today according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is a pattern Americans hate to see – paying more for the same old stuff, but luckily we’re joined by Brian Vines who knows all about the rising prices of groceries and how that affects you as a consumer. He’s the deputy editor of special projects at one of our absolute favorite publications, Consumer Reports. And we’re going to talk about how you can pay less at your local bodega, grocery store, warehouse club, or wherever you buy your food. We discuss going digital with your savings, the rise of rebate apps, the double edged sword of convenience, unlikely places to find discounts, and more. Plus we venture into pet insurance as well as affordable dog food!   Want more How To Money in your life? You don't have to do coin star if you use a brick and mortar for any of your banking you can just deposit it in account. They have a coin counter.

SoFi bank is amazing. I switched from a local credit union after they wouldn't raise my interest rate from .08% to 1%. Got me looking around and I found SoFi.

Hi! Not sure if anyone will see this, but I must ask! Regarding Target Retirement Date funds... I read somewhere online that investing in TRD within a regular brokerage acct (rather than a tax-advantaged 401k or Roth IRA), can have unintended/massive tax consequences. Is this true? Should TRDs be avoided unless in a tax-advantaged account?
