Everyone say hi to Miles Guy. I met Miles through mutual friends (read that as quidditch). Miles is currently a student at the University of Hawaii. He has a knack for languages and it shows by the number of them popping up in his studies. That's not the only thing that pops up as Miles' interests are varied and wide. Originally from California, we talk how his journey brings him to Hawaii as well as his various experiences and interests. Throughout this winding conversation we talk: la femme nikita (I shit you not), world languages, healing, ancestry, the importance of a nemesis and other bits and bobs. In the end, it boils down to life long learning and diving into what really interests you. It was a fun talk. Enjoy.
Everyone, welcome Jeff Beard to the table. Jeff's a small business owner, marathon runner, Toastmaster, inspriational speaker, fire walker, and frequent prison visitor (we'll get to that in the talk). In fact, that's where I got to meet Jeff... from Toastmasters. He's actually one of those Toastmasters I look up to. He's a natural raconteur and you'll see it in the way we twist and turn through his story. In this episode GYST meets GOYA. What does that mean? Well give it a listen and find out.
Everyone say what's up to Raphael Ramos. He's one of the amazing people I've met through Toastmasters. He works at Atlas Insurance, like Elaine Panlilio (Episode 37) just different department. We get to talking about a bunch of themes that pop up in Raphael's life. First and foremost is is passion for music and finance. The main theme I sense in this talk is his compelling need to get things done, no matter what. From hustling to help his family as he was younger to working his way through grad school to breaking out of his shell from Toastmasters to getting his grind on in his journey to find purpose and meaning. We go a lot of places and I felt I learned a lot too. Enjoy.
Everyone say hello to Ryan Charaba. Ryan is an adventurer and is positively pumped for everything going on in his life. He is the owner and operator of First Wakeups, LLC, which is a coaching and consulting agency here in Honolulu that provides his clients with concise recognition of changes that then allow positive movements in their lives. He is also retired from the navy where his work on a submarine provided a fantastic insight to his own life as well as the inspirational namesake for his business now. This is also linked to his personal development experience through PSI seminars which we talk about. Thrown in some mentions of dungeons and dragons weaved into an incredible life story, and a Jerry Maguire reference, and you got this fantastic conversation right here. Give it a listen, it's great.
Everyone say hello to Tamy Deleon. Tamy likes to wear many hats: nurse, business owner, marathon runner, graduate student, and in this episode master storyteller. She and her husband Rick (episode 56) are two of the finest people I've been honored to call my friends. I am always inspired by seeing the awesome things they have created as well as the cool adventures they keep having. Tamy has some awesome stories and she'll be the first to admit that there's more where that all came from. I had learned a lot nonetheless and I thoroughly enjoyed the talk. I know you will too.
Everyone, say hi to my good friend Ricky Deleon. I think the one of the main themes in this talk (among so many) is the thought of forging your own way... no matter what external forces tell you. Ricky was born and raised in Waiminalo on the the island of Oahu and we talk about how this can shape a through-line in his life. We talk about what he's faced through childhood informing him in his career as an equal opportunity officer in the Air Force to an even stronger need to be a positive force of equality and equity in society at large. We even talk about fulfilling a childhood dream of flying. And among all of that we talk about so much more. Give it a listen and I know you'll love it. I enjoyed the heck out of it.
Hi everyone say what's up to Roger Dunn. I met Roger over 10 years ago when we were engineers working in a past life. Now though, he finds himself in the midst of med school in the pursuit of meaning. A lot of this conversation wends and weaves its way through Roger's from what brought him from back then to now and the various lessons in between. I thought it was a pretty interesting ride. I learned a bunch and I know you will too.
Everyone say hello to the wonderful Aubri Mead. I met Aubri a while back in PSI and I had this feeling that she had an awesome story to tell. I wouldn't know until I asked so there I did and here we are with her story. Aubri at the time worked in the IT department in radio and she shares her awesome story on how she ended up here in Hawaii. It's fill with longing and goals and a dream. There's a great journey to realizing the dream as well as talking about what it takes to keep it. Give it a listen, it's awesome.
Everyone, say hello to Jonathan Sugai. Jon is a healer. Specifically, Jon works both the body and mind of his patients. He works on the former as a massage therapist and works on the latter by helping his patients deal with stress as a function of how it affects the body. In one of the more comprehensive talks, we weave through Jon's journey as he discovers the hows and whys of what got him to here. Along the way, we talk running, marathons, personal development, and we ride the roller coaster of life in terms of a physical, mental, and spiritual journey. It's going to be awesome, you're gonna love it.
Everyone, say hello to Daniel Cheung. Daniel say hello to everyone. You all play nice now.Daniel works in the finacial sector, specifically we're talking about wealth planning... we're talking retirement planning as well as insurance planning for his clients. He's been in the game for about 11 years and we talk about his journey that leads him to his specific chosen field. Along the way we hit specific points such as, the trials of college, going "all in" with a leap of faith, and following your path. We also talk about all the things that keep him in the game which among other things, is the precious relationships that have been built, the very sense of ohana. We also get down to the personal story of his own ohana, a story that is both Hawaiian local and international. He has a fantastic tale, come round the circle and give it a listen, I know you'll enjoy it.
Everyone say hi to Kenoilani Kolii. She is one of my great friends from toastmasters. And she's here to help, literally. As she described it, she is a firm believer of a person giving of their time and talents to share with the rest of the world. Makes sense, right? Everyone has something that they're good at, and there are a great and many things that make each and every person so very unique and special. Why not find a way to share it with the most people you can? I am inspired by this talk and I know you will as well. I'll let her tell her story.
Everybody say hello to the wonderful, talented, wonderfully talented Joey Garza (Joey Shibata). Joey works as a safety manager for a concrete and mining organization in the state of Hawaii. I want to say that Joey is also a member of the plate spinning society (like most of my friends and myself as well). This revelation doesn't surprise me. She has a lot going on with the multiple boards she is with, her day job, a growing side business, throw in a splash of volunteering all over the place, and taking the time to be an awesome parent to her fantastic daughters, the work-stuff-life balance topic really comes into play. Listen as we wax on the intricacies of safety, aerospace, state workers, life philosophies, and a fun journey that is no where near ending. I'll let Joey tell her story. You're going to enjoy this.
