Human-Centered Machine Learning

In this course we will explore the challenges presented when designing AI-powered services. In particular, we will take a look at Machine Learning (such as deep learning and generative adversarial networks), and how that can be used in human-centered design of digital services. This course is created for User Experience (UX) professionals, Service Designers, and Product Managers as a way to help take a human-centered approach to AI in their work. The course is also useful for developers and engineers who want to both learn more about different Machine Learning techniques, and at the same time get a deeper understanding of the importance of a human-centered approach to digital design. The podcast is developed by Pontus Wärnestål, Stefan Byttner, Cristofer Englund and Jeanette Sjöberg at Halmstad University in Sweden, and is financed by VINNOVA. Music by Lee Rosevere. Episode 07: Designing AI Services with Gustav Martner

In this episode, we’ll change gear a little bit. We’re discussing the role of human-centered design and its relation to data-driven services. We'll talk about how to consider users' mental models and expectations in our designs, how we move from rule-based tools to probability-based user experiences with "agentive" technology. We'll also talk about how to convey AI capabilities to the user gradually as they start using the service, and how to manage take-back and handoff between the system and the user. Important factors to consider is the "human-like" qualities in an AI-powered service and how we can achieve transparency and be able to explain the different service experience outcomes in different situations. Pontus will talk about this (and other things!) with Gustav Martner, CEO at ICA Reklam and founder of Digital Reliance.
