I'm Not A Peach Crayon

Join hosts Kristen and Aiysha as they explore books, movies, and shows written, directed, and/or starring people of color (POC). Stories are as rich and diverse as the people and cultures in this world. That diversity should be reflected in mainstream media. This podcast challenges the one size fits all "Hollywoodized" narrative while putting the spotlight onto contributions by POC. Shut up & let me gaslight you!

Did you ever wonder about the first onscreen portrayals of black women? Did you know they were by white men? Ever since, their stereotypical depictions have continued to serve as the foundation for how people see and think of black women in (western) media. Never fear! Black sheroes have continued to challenge and change these ideas with their creativity within all forms of media. Whether this is new to you or you've been there and heard it all before, join Kristen and Esha as they discuss Black Women's representation in Hollywood. August Duck Lips: A Masterclass in Tangents

August snuck up on some of us...**COUGH ESHA COUGH** But that is only cause we are living our best lives. What comes with that is a personal reflection on how far the universal Black WE has come in books, film and television (and nod to other POCs level up in the entertainment world). Kristen and Esha take time to acknowledge the advancement, the criticisms and hope that exists when it comes to representation. What have you noticed? We know it isn't perfection, but there is progress and change if you take a step back. Pause. And take it all in...What do you think?

The Same Tropes With a New Bag of Tricks: African mythos + storytelling

Let's chat about the world of African mythos and mysticism and how the same old tropes become something completely different from this new POV. One that's always been here and deserving of a space to weave tales, build worlds and address the questions, issues, quandaries of being human. Def can't fit it all in to one episode - but this topic led us on a tangent or two leading up to our next book for the month - A Song of Wraiths and Ruins, by Roseann A. Brown.

From Bone Witches to Menopause in Space

Closing out AAPI month with the first book in the Bone Witch Trilogy by Chinese Filipino writer Rin Chupeco - a self described "pansexual, liberal atheist" writing YA fiction. Chupeco says that their writing often is very experimental, mixing different styles and themes, which led to them writing The Bone Witch in order to tell the story of characters in two different time periods. The Bone Witch follows Tea, a teen with the whose accidental discovery of her ability to raise the dead, pulls her deep into the world of the Ashas. One she thought she knew, but had no idea what it really means to live in that world.
