We are shedding a spotlight on Upstate New York rising star Kieran Rhodes. Kieran just wowed the Tarrytown Music Hall, opening up for Grammy-Nominated Platinum-Selling artist Five For Fighting. Kieran and I discuss his beginnings in music, his love of baseball, the audition on America's Got Talent that changed his life, and his new song, "Nobody Likes U." If you mixed Elton John's timeless melodies, Randy Newman's witty lyrics, Chris Martin's silky vocals, and then put them all together on a baseball diamond, you'd get Kieran Rhodes. Hailing from Upstate New York, Kieran was on track to play serious college baseball when he discovered a love for music in high school. He taught himself piano and began writing songs in his late teenage years. To date, the prolific and playful piano man has released eight singles and an EP, ‘On the Corner of Somewhere Street.’ He is most recently known for his viral audition on season 17 of America’s Got Talent. Kieran won the hearts of millions around the world with his original song, ‘Disengage’ which chronicles a struggle with depression. With over 40 million views, the audition was praised by many including Billboard, Goldderby, and Simon Cowell himself. This past fall, Kieran was one of the artists at Sound on Sound Music Festival alongside greats, such as Red Hot Chili Peppers and John Mayer. In March, Kieran opened up for JP Saxe at The Fillmore in Washington, D.C. Kieran has exciting performances lined up for 2024, including his return to the festival stage at Boston Calling in May.
Welcome Hudson Valley! This is Conor Walsh, host of In Touch, Townsquare Media of the Hudson Valley’s Award-Winning Public Affairs and Issues program. (I know we were promoting Warwick Cares for this week, but we had to reschedule that episode because of sickness. We will return to focus on Warwick Cares soon!) This week, we get to speak with Alissa Coschigano Mosca about Rocky’s Ruck for Johnny Cake. In her father’s honor, she and her family have partnered with Guardian Revival to raise funds to help sponsor service animals for veterans. We talk about the impact the Ruck has had on the Wappingers community along with the Hudson Valley military community at large, and how folks can contribute. We invite you to listen to a previously recorded conversation between Alissa and myself here on In Touch About "Johnny Cake" John "Johnny Cake" Coschigano Jr was a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corp, joining the service when he was 17 years old. He served in the Vietnam War. He was married to Ann Coschigano for 53 years and had two children, Daniel and Alissa. John resided in Wappingers Falls with his wife Ann for 31 years. He had an Emotional Support Dog named Rocky, who was his best friend and never left his side. When he was 34, he developed an interest in Woodturning, teaching himself different styles, fascinated by wood and the things he could make out of it. He began to do art shows all over the county to sell his wood pieces, where they would become great decor for someone's home. He was a man of few words, but he was full of passion and heart. Rocky's Ruck for Johnny Cake Rocky's Ruck for Johnny Cake Later in life, John suffered through some major injuries and illnesses, resulting in several operations internally, as well as to his back and foot, which should have left him in a wheelchair. He refused to ever be pushed around (literally) and fought through all of his pain, nerve damage and issues in an effort to continue living his life as uninterrupted as possible. Though, as he aged, this became more difficult for him to overcome. As he started to spend more time at home and on the couch, he was faced with memories that he didn't want to relive. As John got older, he found himself affected by PTSD more and more. When he turned 70, nights were no longer pleasant as his dreams were often haunted by memories of War. He continued his battle with PTSD, silently fighting off thoughts that caused pain and heartache. At the age of 73, John lost his battle with PTSD on September 6th 2022. Rocky's Ruck For Johnny Cake To commemorate her dad, Alissa Coschigano Mosca and her family started "Rocky's Ruck for Johnny Cake" on his anniversary, it is about a 5-mile ruck march starting at the cemetery where he lays to rest, Wappingers Rural Cemetery to the War Memorial on All Angels Hills Road, right down the road from where her parents lived. This ruck was started last year, as a way to honor Johnny Cake, for being the man that he was and to bring more attention to the many who battle with PTSD. Alissa says, He is someone that I have always looked up to, someone who supported me and was my best friend. By rucking in his honor, we hope to raise money and support for a charity that provides a K9 for every veteran battling with PTSD. Rocky brought our dad happiness and light when things seemed sad and dark, and we are hoping to help provide that for all others in need of happiness, joy and support that a service animal can bring. Through partnering with Guardian Revival, Alissa and her family hope to support those who may not be in a place to ask for help, those who dedicated their life to serving our country and returned with scars that we will never be able to see. A dog is so much more than a pet. They provide unconditional love, support, happiness and smiles, all while focusing their attention on the one that stands beside them. A dog can save a life in ways that some may never understand. Alissa says, "W ...
We are shedding a spotlight on award-winning songwriter Gary Burr, who has just launched his debut novel, Reunion. As a Nashville Hall of Fame songwriter, Gary has written hits for stars like Ringo Starr, Reba McEntire, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Kenny Logins, Richard Marx, Kenny Chesney and more, plus helping to launch the career of other artists like Faith Hill. Reunion, a rock and roll fairy tale that reached #1 in New Releases on Amazon, imagines a Beatles reunion concert organized by Paul McCartney, blending nostalgia, humor, and heart. As Gary explains to me in our interview below, the story takes place in a "What If" scenario, imagining a world where John Lennon never got assassinated. Gary was able to put together this fictional tale after working with Beatle drummer Ringo Starr for about 20 years. In addition to the novel, Gary shares insights on his journey as a songwriter, his work with music legends, and the enduring influence of The Beatles. Listen to the Full Interview w/ Gary Burr Below ? Who is Gary Burr? GARY BURR is one of Nashville’s most accomplished songwriters with 32 top forty hits, 24 top tens, and 14 number-one songs. One of the rare breed who writes hits alone as well as co-writing, Gary is a favorite collaborator of writing icons such as Carole King, Richard Marx, Don Schlitz, Victoria Shaw, Kenny Loggins … even Ringo Starr! His songs have been recorded by Christina Aguilera, Juice Newton, Garth Brooks, Kenny Rogers, Joe Cocker, Reba McEntire, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Michael Bolton, Randy Travis, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, LeAnn Rimes, Kelly Clarkson, and many others. He’s been named Songwriter of the Year by Billboard and ASCAP, twice by the NSAI, and has been inducted into the Nashville Songwriter Hall of Fame. Gary has been teaching songwriting courses to a new generation of musicians and was featured in the Poets and Prophets series by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Over the years Gary has kept his joy of music alive by keeping his hand in as many musical adventures as he can… replacing Vince Gill as the lead singer in the seminal country-rock group Pure Prairie League; spent years writing and performing with pop legend Carole King; guitarist/vocalist for Ringo Starr in his band The Roundheads; is a member of the group Laurel Canyon Band (with Mark Mirando and Mark Hudson), and co-founded Blue Sky Riders (with Georgia Middleman and Kenny Loggins). In the early 2000s, Gary was invited to work on a record with Ringo Starr, beginning a decades-long friendship that continues to this day. They have now recorded ten albums together. He has just written and produced a country single for Ringo that will be released in March of ‘24. His years of friendship and working alongside living legends like Ringo, Carole, Kenny, and many others have given him profound insights into what goes on in front of and behind the curtain. All of that helped inspire and bring life and authenticity to his first novel, Reunion. We are shedding a spotlight on September being Pulmonary Fibrosis Month. I got to speak once again with 4-Time World Series Winner, 5-Time All-Star, Grammy-Nominated Artist, Billboard Best-Selling Act, New York Yankees Legend and World-Renowned Jazz Guitarist Bernie Williams. Accompanying Bernie was Scott Staszak, President and CEO of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (PFF). Together, they discussed their campaign Tune In To Lung Health, and what PFF is doing through the month of September to raise money and awareness. This project hits close to home for Bernie Williams, whose life was forever changed after losing his father, Bernabe, in 2001 to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) – a common type of interstitial lung disease (ILD) – after years of battling. In 2017, Bernie became the national spokesperson for Breathless, and now currently Tune Into Lung Health, an educational awareness campaign for Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) and Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a mysterious lung disease that took the life of Bernie’s father Bernabe Sr., and still has no cure. He has been touring the country visiting many cities, Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball ballparks, and speaking at major medical conferences to spread the word about the disease that affects up to 132,000 people and their families per year.

Today we are shedding a spotlight on New York City musician Leo Sawikin. He is excited to be playing at Daryl's House on Sunday, September 22nd. We talk about his latest releases and how working with Seattle producer Phil Ek has helped to unlock his latest sound. New York City singer / songwriter Leo Sawikin has released “What Is The Answer,” on July 10. The song and upcoming debut album was recorded at Studio Litho in Seattle with producer Phil Ek (Grouplove, Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse) and mastered by Greg Calbi (The Smile, Bob Dylan, Bon Iver) at Sterling Sound. “What Is The Answer” is the follow up to “Till You’re Somebody Else,” released April 2 - listen HERE + watch the lyric video HERE. It reached the #1 spot on the Mediabase A/C Independent Artists Chart, has been in the Top 30 for ten weeks. It also reached #26 on Billboard’s AC Chart. “’What Is The Answer’ is a song that asks what consciousness is and questions whether it’s something that transcends our physical lives or ends when we pass,” says Sawikin. “Will there be pain, or will it be peaceful? It also ties into the theme of ‘Till You’re Somebody Else,’ in that it sees our current lives as just a moment in our existence.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Leo Sawikin (@leosawikin) Sawikin, the former front man of the indie band The Chordaes, describes his solo work as “indie folk pop with a dreamy shimmer,” and it’s apparent in songs he’s already released including “Till You’re Somebody Else.” Other tracks include “Hold On” which Earmilk calls “a “…masterpiece” And said the song “…takes listeners on an emotional rollercoaster that they won't soon forget. “Hold On” showcases Leo Sawikin's innate talent and ability to craft introspective and relatable songs.” “The Same Mistakes” had Celeb Mix raving, “…a low-slung, softly gleaming guitar topped by Sawikin’s oh-so evocative voice, at once tender and wistful…rolls into a delicious, throbbing rhythm, swaying on gentle undulations. Slowly building, the tune takes on a glowing wall of sound, full of enveloping resonance and gorgeous, shimmering coloration.” Neufutur hailed Sawikin’s vocals on “Don’t Pass It By” as “…a deeply felt, attentive, and highly musical performance…That falsetto note during the song’s chorus puts a graceful touch on an already elegant performance…” Other recent releases include “New York I’m Coming Home”, an uplifting song about the joys of coming home after a long trip and seeing your surroundings with fresh eyes, as well as “This River”.
