Through conversations with a variety of people who knew Ronald Trimboli, a picture emerges of a charismatic, small-time hustler. An almost comically reckless person, who had a tendency to talk himself into trouble. In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname.
Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers (who all say they are innocent!) turned jailhouse-lawyers. In prison they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away. They set out to turn the tables on Scarcella while still in prison. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they would succeed.
Thirty years later, more than 20 people Scarcella helped put away have walked free. In the media he’s the “disgraced detective,” the rogue cop who hoodwinked an entire system.
For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast ... where justice is done (and undone).

SPOILER As a grad student of biology with a focus on genetics: I get why it should have been deemed inconclusive the first time, but the retest shows it was correct. So the science itself isn't the issue here. The problem is that the sample could have been contaminated or the situation interpreted wrongly, but the DNA was his. There's a LOT of fluff in this podcast. The presentation is fine (except for the you knows that should've been cut out). If you have nothing else to listen to. ★★★☆☆
This guy drove me absolutely NUTS, I had to fast forward, You Know, You Know, You Know, You Know, You Know!!!! 🥺 I guess I should be glad "What I Mean" wasn't added to every "You Know"..…. I really hope this juror listened to this episode and realizes what people listen to when he talks to people!!!!

Omgggg, the detective repeatedly pronouncing thorough as "thurr-uhl" made my teeth itch.
The jury specifically ask for the evidence on the washer and dryer, and they have a right to weigh ALL the evidence. I believe this is a reversal error, and just because the judge said, " You have all the evidence," doesn't make it the truth This defendant didn't get a fair trial.
