Description

Healthcare expert Andy Slavitt became America’s COVID dad by shepherding us through the pandemic. Now on short-term assignment in D.C. to fight the pandemic, he’s enlisted his respected friend Bob Wachter, M.D., Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, to fill in for him. Dr. Bob will make house calls twice a week, bringing you his frontline view of the crisis, astute analysis, and reassuring bedside manner to answer your questions. Of course, the best scientists, policy leaders, and cultural icons will join Dr. Bob in the bubble, as will Lana Slavitt to help us keep tabs on Andy until he returns in June.

On the first day of President Biden's term, Dr. Bob takes a look at the toll the pandemic is having right now in Los Angeles – the epicenter of the nation’s winter surge – with emergency room physician Erika Flores Uribe and Hal Yee, Chief Medical Officer with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. They discuss who's most affected, what it's like on the front lines, what they're doing to turn things around, and how the vaccine rollout is going in L.A. Dr. Bob also reflects on what we can look forward to after Inauguration Day in the fight against COVID-19.   Follow Dr. Bob on Twitter @Bob_Wachter and check out In the Bubble’s new Twitter account @inthebubblepod.   Keep up with Andy in D.C. on Twitter @ASlavitt and Instagram @andyslavitt.   In the Bubble is supported in part by listeners like you. Andy’s two themes for 2020 are “surviving” and “remembering,” so Andy reflected on the year with the ultimate survivor: Senator Tammy Duckworth. He caught up with her in her D.C. office before she leaves for the holiday recess. They review the job Congress did in 2020, the low points many Americans have faced, and the promising notes for the future. Dr. Megan Ranney recorded her shift in a COVID-19 ER in Rhode Island the day after Thanksgiving and was kind enough to talk to Andy about it. Andy brings you an inside look at President-elect Biden’s COVID-19 efforts with task force co-chair Vivek Murthy, former US Surgeon General and one of Biden’s senior advisors in the pandemic. Andy and Vivek discuss what the President-elect is thinking about the pandemic, the (lack of) transition, and his priorities come January 20. Plus, how they hope to reverse the damage done by — as Vivek puts it — the way politics has poisoned the pandemic response. Keep up with Andy on Twitter @ASlavitt and Instagram @andyslavitt. Andy calls up one of the country’s leading experts on pandemic preparedness, Johns Hopkins University's Tom Inglesby, to get the best possible view on the winter wave hitting the country. Johns Hopkins has been the gold standard for COVID-19 information and Tom also has a prominent role on the Biden-Harris COVID transition team. Andy, Back in October I told my wife Debbie, "If Biden wins, Andy will be heading back to DC, just watch!" "Are you serious?" she asked. "100%" I said. I'm so glad I was right, let me know if I can help in any way from my bubble in Minnesota. Love you man!😎

Hi there. Thank you for this episode. I am fully dependent on TPN (IV nutrition) and have a compromised immune system. I fully understand the triggers & fear of contracting this virus. I’m absolutely strict about how my family deals with packages, going out & maintaining social distancing. No one, other than my immediate family, has entered my home since mid-March. Not even my nurse. It’s exhausting & sad. Thanks again for keeping us informed. Stay safe, y’all!

The discussion about when things open up, one thing that was missed is the people at home following carefully to what is going on. I personally won't eat meat ever again but another reason is the cost to both animals and humans to process that meat. Humans working in those plants are being treated worse than the animals. I can't be alone so I fully expect people will start eating less meat or not at all. There is a yuck factor too when imagining how these people are able to pass this virus around so easily, all while chopping pieces of pigs into chops. Most people who imagine that and also prepare food for their children may finally get around to researching other sources of protein which are actually much cheaper for the consumer then meat products.
