Call the cops! We are back with an episode of Temporary Fandoms, and it's a two-parter. I am joined by the always excellent John Tansey and Zoe Von Hess to work our way through the work of the inimitable Shaun Ryder. We look at the first half of his career in this episode right up to the first Black Grape Album. There is a playlist to accompany this episode and you can find that here : MONDAYS PLAYLIST To find out more about us go to www.infrequency.co.uk
I invited guitarist for Delta Sleep, Glen Hodgson on to talk us through what is and isn't Math Rock. We got some answers for sure, but I still can never put my finger on what makes something "mathy". I regale Glen with phrases from the early 90s like "wazzy" which just makes me feel old. We also talk about being in Delta Sleep, touring, music production, the Albini sound, and a bunch of other stuff. We work our way from Slint, through Don Caballero, Toe, Pretend, Faraquet, up to Real Terms. We even have a track that even to me doesn't seem very "mathy" Find out more about Delta Sleep, and buy some music at https://www.deltasleepband.com/ LISTEN WITH ALL THE SONGS FOR FREE at either www.infrequency.co.uk or at www.mixcloud.com/tempfans Please pop over to our mixcloud and like and comment on the episodes, it really helps The tunes are all on this Spotify Playlist
I was joined for this episode by That Petrol Emotion guitarist Raymond Gorman to take us back to Derry in the mid 80's through the lens of his DJ stints at the Left Bank Disco. We talk about the local scene, living in Derry in the mid 80's, being a DJ with a manifesto, Almost blowing yourself up on a lighting rig, starting a band, moving to that London, and in a break from normal MSG norms, stuff about the guests actual band. Ewan does tell a few boring anecdotes, and here's a bonus drinking game for you, every time he mentions that he is from Wolverhampton - SHOT. Tracks include Afrika Bambaataa, Mr Bloe, The Smiths, New Order, yes, and more. Keep an eye out for the upcoming That Petrol Emotion boxed set, which is coming out in November on Edsel Records and it's called "Every beginning has a future' LISTEN WITH ALL THE SONGS FOR FREE at either www.infrequency.co.uk or at www.mixcloud.com/tempfans Please pop over to our mixcloud and like and comment on the episodes, it really helps Spotify playlist here Thanks to J Fisher for the intro tune and stings
Punktuation Mag UK editor Molly Tie joins me for a fascinating long conversation about the evolution of Girl Groups. From the Shangri-Las to Girls Aloud, via The Slits, Runaways, Bangles, Donnas, Bananarama, and more. We discuss sexism in pop, exploitation, fashion, marketing, my inability to form cohesive sentences when it's 40 degrees, why Bananarama were way more important than I thought, and ....well, just have a listen. You can find Molly at www.twitter.com/molly_tie and at www.punktuationmag.com/ Help support the show at www.mixcloud.com/tempfans and find out more at www.infrequency.co.uk Theme music by J Fisher
This took me a while to think up the name for this eclectic journey through the music tastes of Head Honcho at Tiny Global Productions, John Henderson. I think I got it right in the end, despite me using my bad mic by mistake (though it's OK as John does 90% of all the talking) We take a look at artists who just do, or did, their own thing, hard to pinpoint in any specific genre, sometimes on the cusp of greatness, sometimes on the outskirts. Regardless it's a great selection of tunes from Rocksteady, to Hippy Folk, and much much more. THERE IS NO SPOTIFY PLAYLIST THIS TIME AS IT WOULD ONLY BE HALF FULL!!!! (best listen on our site or mixcloud then) With TUNES at www.infrequency.co.uk or www.mixcloud.com/tempfans John runs Tiny Global Productions, who release amazing music from bands such as The Nightingales, Band of Holy Joy, Blue Orchids, David Lance Callahan, and loads more cool stuff. Find out more and support the artists at https://tinyglobalproductions.bandcamp.com/artists And please consider supporting our show on Mixcloud with a tip or a cheap subscription. or even just come along and hit the BIG HEART next to an episode and like it! I am joined by not one but two guests, co-hosts of the excellent Smash Hits podcast, "The Giddy Carousel Of Pop" Gavin Hogg, and Simon Galloway. As 80's pop aficionados they chose to take me through some of the 80's unsung pop belters (though I did have to question them on whether a couple of the choices were obscure at all). There is a playlist on Spotify to the tunes we are talking about, here OR YOU CAN LISTEN FOR FREE WITH ALL THE MUSIC AT OUR HOME PAGE OR MIXCLOUD www.infrequency.co.uk https://www.mixcloud.com/tempfans/movements-scenes-and-genres-80s-pop-nuggets-with-the-giddy-carousel-of-pop/ From Adam Ant, Human League, Thomas Dolby, to Neneh Cherry , what we may lack in hard hitting issues we more than make up for with TUNES! First of all, apologies for the slightly sub-par sound quality this month. In this episode of Temporary Fandoms we look at the stunning first half of the discography of PJ Harvey. We are joined by Doctor of Music, Liam Maloney, to talk about the rise and possible fall of Disco. We look at how Disco began in a New York loft, the Stonewall uprising, the destruction of dangerous disco records, how disco continues to this day, and no Abba, though there is some Ethel Merman, for some reason. And Liam chose some incredibly long, but cracking, tunes for us to listen to, including Idris Muhammad, Eddie Kendricks, and erm Ethel Merman! OOF, it's a long one. We were joined for this by author, critic, comic, and musician Marc Burrows. We take a long look at the rise and fall of the most 90s of 90s things, Britpop. Welcome to the Temporary Fandoms Wrap Up. After we looked at the entire discography last year we have come back together to spend about the same amount of time looking solely at their amazing new album Lucifer on the Sofa. Rejoining us are William Shunn, Emily Baldoni, and for the first time Tyler Darling (from the podcast “I turn my podcast on”. We talk our way through hot takes, slight detours and a lot of opinion. And we play a couple of tracks as well. Full details can be found at www.infrequency.co.uk Thanks to Stylon Pilson and Taiko Taiko for the awesome theme music.
For the first Temporary Fandoms of 2022 we invited Aaron Troye-White back to take us through the discography of James Murphy’s LCD Soundsystem. We are also joined by the always insightful Chris Whitby. As usual we look at, and listened to, all of the albums and seem to have a fluid set of opinions. We obviously namecheck every band LCD use as influence, talk about taking Nike money, sounding like the Fall, and other lazy hot takes. This is the standard podcast version, but if you want to support the show, the artists we play then head over to infrequency.co.uk to find out more, or head straight to our mixcloud.com/tempfans to subscribe and listen to the full version packed full of music There is, as always a spotify playlist, but we are no longer editing the podcast into it. All links are in our bio Music was provided by J Fisher as always
For this episode of MSG10 , a TEMPFANS production.we invited author of "Electric Wizards: A Tapestry of Heavy Music, 1968 to the Present" JR Moores onto the show. he takes us through ten songs that cover one of the chapters of his book, NOISE ROCK. It's pretty heavy from start to finish, and we spend A LOT of time talking about what is, and what isn't a genre. And what makes something "heavy" You also get to listen to my voice disappear as I had Covid at the time of recording. The spotify playlist has a few substitutions as there are tracks we talked about that are kinda missing. https://sptfy.com/MSGNR This is part of our February Edition of Infrequency, a kind of audio music magazine selection of pods. take your time and come back next month. Find out more at infrequency.co.uk or listen to them all here on Mixcloud.
