2024-06-0634:27

Technology and culture writer Taylor Lorenz joins Vanessa and Natalie to discuss TikTok, its addictive algorithm, and what’s behind the U.S. ban of the app. Is TikTok really an instrument of insidious espionage and control, or are lawmakers just scared of Gen Z activism? Her style was so timeless that today, everyone on TikTok wants to dress like her. But the woman is a cypher; she was endlessly photographed by paparazzi but no recording of her voice exists. Why are we still fascinated by Carolyn Bessette and JFK Jr? Glynnis MacNichol, author of I’m Mostly Here to Enjoy Myself, joins us to discuss the couple’s legacy and the role they play in our cultural imagination. As some students hear back from colleges this spring, Vanessa and Natalie dig deeper into the admissions hysteria, obsession, and scandal. The Varsity Blues case might have cracked open an illegal underworld of corrupt deals—but there are plenty of perfectly legal ways privileged parents bend the system to their will. Think test prep, tutors, and college coaches who charge hundreds of thousands of dollars to text kids reminding them to turn in their math homework. Today, Vanessa talks to Sarah Bernstein, playwright, college essay writing coach, and author of the New York Times story, “Elite College Admissions Have Turned Students Into Brands.” Click ‘Subscribe’ at the top of the Infamous show page on Apple Podcasts or visit GetTheBinge.com to get access wherever you get your podcasts. In 2019, a case called Varsity Blues cracked open college admissions, revealing a nexus of corrupt athletic coaches and celebrity parents willing to spend hundreds of thousands to guarantee their children spots at top schools. At the center of the scandal was a shady, smooth-talking con-artist named Rick Singer, primed to take advantage of parents’ insecurities, fears, and ambitions for their children. In this episode, Vanessa talks with Eric Rosen, the prosecutor in the Varsity Blues case, about the juicy details—from finding Singer to wire tapping his phone—and reflects on what this case tells us about U.S. colleges and the admissions process today. In the 90s, you couldn’t escape rapper and record executive Sean Love Combs (aka Puff Daddy or P. Diddy) and his hit songs like “It's All About the Benjamins.” Now Combs is back in the spotlight, but for far darker reasons: a series of sex trafficking and abuse claims. This week, we’re delving into Combs’s decades-long relationship with the late Kim Porter, a model, singer, and actress.  Click ‘Subscribe’ at the top of the Infamous show page on Apple Podcasts or visit GetTheBinge.com to get access wherever you get your podcasts. Tree services typically include tree trimming, tree removal, stump grinding, and sometimes tree health assessments. If you need help finding a specific tree service in Evansville, Indiana, you might want to check local business directories, online listings, or ask for recommendations from neighbors or friends who have used similar services. https://treewisemenllc.com/evansville/

wow. some of the most out-dated assumptions about women in this one. women are not 'hard wired' to want long term relationships, and many women do not respond well to negging. identifying Women who respond to negging is the first screen for these dudes to know a target is vulnerable to manipulation. good lord.

Ah, the infamous... a word that conjures up tales of mystery, notoriety, and a touch of intrigue. Whether it's a legendary figure from history or a modern-day scandal that has captured the world's attention, the word "infamous" holds a certain fascination. https://parkbench.com/directory/prime-butcher-wrap Throughout history, we've seen individuals who have etched their names into the annals of infamy. From the enigmatic exploits of figures like Jack the Ripper to the complex lives of political figures like Richard Nixon, the concept of infamy seems to be a blend of actions, circumstances, and the lasting impact they leave on society. https://startups.snapmunk.com/chicago-il-usa/printing/prime-butcher-wrap

Wow...just wow. I've listened to a few podcasts about this cult, but to hear one with the reporter who got the first and only access to the actual cult members/leaders while in the thick of their brainwashing? I'm glad I decided to listen (almost skipped because I HAVE heard other podcasts). I wish you'd gone more into witness testimony, and covered how the slaves of other women would have to answer every beck and call on their "masters." I say that because you did such a good job of covering the story and not just sensationalizing it, that I would've liked to hear your take on it. I think I remember hearing about women having to get up at 2 am or any time of day to do something frivolous for the person who was their master- stuff like that. I also wish you'd gone more into what the daily life of many members had looked like (how many times are they called on to do service and acts of penance?) but maybe I just missed it. There was so much in this podcast that I hadn't heard anywhere e
