Jan de Bont’s adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s novel bears little resemblance to the source material, much less the 1963 Robert Wise film, but with all the talent that worked on the movie it should have still been a success. Stephen King and Steven Spielberg both pitched in, but for whatever reason they couldn’t save the movie from critical disappointment. I think it makes sense that in the show MB at first seems very negative about humans; after all, we're seeing some of its experiences from before the book begins, when humans are making a game of tormenting it, something that's alluded to in the books but not shown. In the books, the PresAux people are the first humans it's met that treat each other well and try to treat MB as a person. We know its previous interactions with humans have been bad, but in the show we're seeing it.
