Change is one of the few constants in life, and yet we often fear and resist it. As humans, our brains are hardwired for what we're used to, and when something unexpected pops up, our brains are triggered to protect us from potential harm. Change is inevitable, however, and it can be overwhelming for both businesses and individuals. Are you ready to become an active participant in change? Join me on the latest episode of Insight Out where I sit down with Marché Pleshette. Marché is here to help equip us with the tools to turn uncertainty into opportunity through change and will share her vast knowledge in the world of leadership and communication. We will explore Marché's insights on how to embrace change and use it to our advantage. We'll discuss the three zones of change: status quo, disruption, and adoption. We'll also look at historical examples of how change has been used to innovate and level up. Meet Marché Pleshette, Marché is a keynote speaker, facilitator, and leadership coach who has been at Franklin Covey as a consultant since 2008. She has taught many people how to infuse the philosophy of the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People into their life and business. She focuses on effective communication, leadership, professional change and transitions, employee engagement, and retention. She is the co-author of Franklin Covey's newest book, Change: How to Turn Uncertainty into Opportunity. Marché Pleshette was inspired to learn the competency of embracing change in order to innovate. She discovered that change is a process that requires support, understanding, and the ability to look around and see what is possible. She found that by understanding how to navigate change, leaders can help their team members to not be overwhelmed by it, but to use it as a tool to level up and become even more successful. With the right attitude, Marché realized that change can be embraced, rather than feared. Now, let's dive into the nitty gritty of change and how to use it to our advantage. In this episode we cover: How Judy Hendrix Influenced Marché to be a better facilitator, be a better presenter (00: 03:30) Why do we fear change and how can we learn to embrace change? Having made her television debut at just 9 years old, Alessandra Torresani is well-known for her roles in The Big Bang Theory, Caprica, Arrested Development and Malcolm in the Middle. In our interview with Alessandra, she gets candid about navigating adult life as an actress after she was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 at the age of 22. Despite being discouraged from talking about her mental health openly, Alessandra realized the importance of encouraging stigma-free conversations about mental health after she decided to share her story. She said, “I’m Alessandra Torresani, and I am bipolar. Who wants to talk?” It turns out, a lot of people did. This “talk” kick-started her advocacy to normalize talking about mental health issues, and she has since started her own podcast, called EmotionAL Support, where she discusses mental health with her guests. In this episode, we discuss: - Alexandra's childhood and her journey through misdiagnosis - The importance that documenting both highs and lows has on receiving an accurate diagnosis - Alessandra’s work with NAMI, and the conference where she shared her bipolar diagnosis - How toxic positivity discourages people from talking about their struggles - Finding emotional support and comfort - The difference between mental health and mental illness - What we can do to help destigmatize the conversation around mental health According to Alessandra, it's vital that we start talking about mental health openly and encourage people to seek support and medical help when they need it. This is the only way to foster an environment where every single one of us can celebrate our individuality and uniqueness. What if I told you that while the world has undergone profound changes, our leadership approaches have remained largely stagnant? What if, instead of relying on hierarchical structures and top-down directives, leaders embraced a more effective approach based on trust and inspiration? In this episode of the Insight Out, I have the pleasure of sitting down with none other than Stephen M.R. Covey, a renowned author and an authority on leadership. We dive deep into the transformative power of trust and how it serves as a cornerstone of inspiration in leadership. Covey draws a stark contrast between the antiquated command and control style and the trust and inspire approach, which he passionately advocates for as being crucial in today's world, especially when dealing with knowledge workers. Throughout our conversation, Covey shares personal anecdotes and real-world examples that bring his concepts to life. Such examples are the leadership styles of Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella and the leadership approach of Zoom CEO Eric Yuan which epitomizes the principles we discuss. He then breaks down the three stewardships of a trust and inspire leader—modeling, trusting, and inspiring. Each of these plays a vital role in not just leading but empowering others to reach their full potential. Covey doesn't just leave us with theory; he offers practical advice on how to build agreements that lay the foundation for a collaborative and empowered workplace. Join us as we explore these insightful themes and let's uncover how trust and inspiration can reshape the landscape of leadership In this episode, you will learn the following: Leadership and its impact on individuals Shifting from command and control to trust and inspire leadership The principles of trust and inspire contrasted with command and control The importance of self-awareness and a shift towards trust and inspire leadership The barriers to becoming a trust and inspire leader The three stewardships of a trust and inspire leader: modeling, trusting, and inspiring In This Episode: [10:20] Tapping into untapped potential [18:08] Command and control vs. trust and inspire [20:37] Trust and inspire [25:02] Barriers to becoming a trust and inspire leader [35:23] Inspiring confidence in others [38:35] Trust as human motivation [40:17] Microsoft's Satya Nadella as a trust and inspire leader [41:32] Modeling behavior [43:54] Inspiring leadership [45:24] The power of trust [52:01] Building trust through Co-Creation [54:00] The leadership style of Eric Yuan, CEO of Zoom [55:02] The power of modeling in leadership [59:46] Stephen M.R. In this episode, Billy sits down with Bob Burg, author of a wealth of successful books on sales, marketing, and influence. Of his books, he calls one the cornerstone of his life’s work: Adversaries into Allies: Master the Art of Ultimate Influence. They explore the themes he outlined in this insightful book, in addition to Bob’s primary framework: the Five Principles of Influence. If you’ve ever wanted to have more influence without resorting to manipulation, this conversation will guide you in the right direction. Bob Burg shares how a subtle shift in focus is not only a more uplifting and fulfilling way of conducting business but the most financially profitable way, as well. For 30 years, he’s helped companies, sales leaders, and their teams communicate their value more effectively, sell at higher prices with less resistance, and grow their businesses based on Endless Referrals. Bob has regularly addressed audiences ranging in size from 50 to 16,000 — sharing the platform with notables including today’s top thought leaders, broadcast personalities, Olympic athletes, and political leaders, including a former United States President. Although he was best known for his book Endless Referrals for years, it’s his business parable, The Go-Giver (coauthored with John David Mann), that’s captured the imagination of his readers. The Go-Giver, a Wall Street Journal and BusinessWeek Bestseller, makes up over a million of Bob’s 2 million total book sales. Since its release, it has consistently stayed in the Top 25 on Porchlight’s (formerly 800-CEO-READ) Business Book Bestsellers List. The book has been translated into 30 languages. Great influencers don’t try to push their ideas to others. Great influencers attract people. If we want people to take action to go towards the desired outcome, it has to align with what they want. Their values and their goals have to align. Only when you’re the boss of yourself, then you’re in the position to take a potentially negative situation and turn it into a win. Make sure that you’re the master of your emotions as opposed to your emotions being your master. Notable Quotes: [02:14] – “Tact is the language of strength.” [05:15] – “People do things for their reasons, not our reasons.” [15:54] – “By all means take your emotions along for the ride but make sure you’re driving the car.” [17:02] – “Self-control is the very essence of the character.” More from Bob: Bob Burg’s Books: The Go-Giver Influencer The Go-Giver A Teacher’s Guide to The Go-Giver The Go-Giver Leader Adversaries into Allies Go-Givers Sell More Endless Referrals The Success Formula Bob’s Website: https://burg.com/ Connect with Bob on Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/burgbob https://twitter.com/bobburg https://www.youtube.com/user/burgcommunications https://www.linkedin.com/in/bobburg/ This is an encore episode and was originally published on August 12, 2021. How can we shift our thinking in order to break a pattern? And how can we take positive action to make transformative changes in our lives? That’s the focus of Scott Miller’s new book, “Master Mentors Vol. 2.” It examines key insights from 30 of the world’s most transformational leadership thinkers – including Seth Godin, Susan Cain, General Stanley McChrystal and more – and provides simple steps to implement the same insights in your own life. In today’s episode, Scott joins me to talk about the most valuable lessons he’s learned from his own mentor, the concept of transformational insight, the subtle nuances between self-worth, self-esteem and self-confidence, why vulnerability is a key element of leadership, and more. “I think the power of transformation has the power for you to see yourself differently. It has the power for you to challenge your paradigm, your mindset, your belief system, to say, gosh, I always thought about gratitude in this way, but now I'm gonna think about gratitude in this way. Or I thought about what's next for me or my business model. They're personal and professional. I think it's really intended to help kind of shake you to say you've been in this pattern of thinking this line of behavior and just shaking a little bit to say, is that serving you well? Is that serving those around you?” – Scott (06:03) Top 3 Takeaways A mentor can be anyone. “I don't think you have to know or be in an intimate relationship, professional relationship with your mentor at all,” Scott says. It doesn’t matter that you can’t meet with them for one-on-one guidance; a mentor is anyone who helps you understand how to improve your life, and in the age of podcasts and YouTube, you can get that wisdom in a variety of ways. Try to assume positive intent. Everybody makes mistakes, and sometimes even the most well-intended words come out wrong. A person’s words say more about them than they do about you.
