One of the phrases I’ve always liked to use when applying for grants is, ‘We complement rather than duplicate existing services in the area’. In this video: - Befriend your competitors - What are community partnerships? - Effective partnership working - Applying for grants as a partnership For further resources, training & mentoring to help you make a difference in your community, go to: https://www.rachelireland.co.uk/   Newsletter & podcast: https://www.rachelireland.co.uk/newsletter-podcast Online courses: https://www.rachelireland.co.uk/onlinecourses Books: https://www.rachelireland.co.uk/books Work with me: https://www.rachelireland.co.uk/workwithme
This is a question I’ve been asked a few times; most recently by my friend, Sally, who had been asked to become a trustee for a local arts organisation. I realised that although most people know what a trustee is, and a bit about what they do, there is less of an understanding about the responsibilities of trustees. There’s also a fear around liability; in other words, if something goes wrong, could I be blamed? Here, I’ll try to answer these questions, and talk a little about the role of a trustee, including: - What is a trustee? - Who can be a trustee? - How are trustees recruited/elected? - What are the duties of a trustee? - Do all trustees have the same role? - What skills does a trustee need to have? - As a trustee, can I be held liable? - Does a trustee get paid? - What are the benefits of becoming a trustee? I wonder who we mean by ‘someone’. Usually we mean the authorities, the people in charge, whether that’s the government, the NHS, or our employers. It’s precisely the frustration that other people are not doing their jobs that results in this feeling of helplessness. We think, ‘what’s the point?’ For further resources, training & mentoring to help you make a difference in your community, go to: https://www.rachelireland.co.uk/   Newsletter & podcast: https://www.rachelireland.co.uk/newsletter-podcast Online courses: https://www.rachelireland.co.uk/onlinecourses Books: https://www.rachelireland.co.uk/books Work with me: https://www.rachelireland.co.uk/workwithme

If you're interested in starting a not-for-profit organisation or applying for grants, then this video is for you! By turning my workshop content into these three core workbooks, I was able to share my knowledge with a wider audience and help others achieve their goals.
If, like me, you work in the third sector, or you run a small business or community group, it’s likely you’ve been asked on a number of occasions to describe your aims and objectives. ‘What are your aims and objectives’ is often the first question on a funding application, as well as on many business plan templates. However, this question is not just for groups, businesses and organisations. Thinking about your personal aims and objectives can be an alternative way of describing and defining your own goals and ambitions. If you have your own website or a social media presence, it can be helpful to be able to summarise your aims and objectives, to give an overview of who you are and what you do. It can also serve as a personal statement on your CV or a job application. Therefore, alongside the definitions of aims and objectives, I’m going to give some examples of what aims and objectives might look like for each of the following: • An individual • A community group • A small business • A large charity For further resources, training & mentoring to help you make a difference in your community, go to: https://www.rachelireland.co.uk/   Newsletter & podcast: https://www.rachelireland.co.uk/newsletter-podcast Online courses: https://www.rachelireland.co.uk/onlinecourses Books: https://www.rachelireland.co.uk/books Work with me: https://www.rachelireland.co.uk/workwithme
Simply put, a community group is a group of people working together with a common aim. Whilst you might start out as an informal group, if you want to gain real traction and make an impact on your local community, you might want to take a step towards formalising your group. What's your big idea?

What's your big idea?

2023-08-2105:26

Have you ever had one of those ideas that was so huge and crazy, you think it could actually work? Do you daydream about making something happen that would have a big impact in the world? Do you ever wonder what you could achieve if you really tried? Has something happened in your life that was perhaps difficult or challenging, or an event or situation that turned your world upside down? In order to make anything happen, from planning a party to starting a business, we draw from our own experiences, from those of our friends and family, from the resources that we have around us. Lots of people have big ideas to do something good, something worthwhile, to give back, to pay it forward. But often those altruistic intentions get lost in real life and responsibilities. If you’re feeling driven to use your own personal experiences and turn them into an idea that could help others, here are some questions and suggestions to get you started. Tiny acts of kindness

Tiny acts of kindness

2023-07-3106:46

When I talk about changing the world, I’m not talking about overthrowing governments or stopping wars or finding cures. I’m talking about all the little things that so often go unnoticed each day. I’m looking at those people I work with who are providing a hot meal for those sleeping rough in the town centre, a warm space for a handful of older residents, those small companies able to offer one apprenticeship or a part-time job to someone who just needs to be given a break. It’s also those small courtesies that don’t cost anything but have the power to mean everything; from holding the door open for someone, to remembering to ask after a colleagues’ poorly child, to seeing someone who is clearly not okay, not knowing what to say but just letting them know you are there for them. I’ve spent most of my career working in the third sector and supporting not-for-profit organisations…and then trying to explain what that actually means. In this episode I’m going to aim to clearly define what a not-for-profit organisation is and what it isn’t as well as what a not-for-profit is set up to do. The ‘third sector’ generally refers to organisations that are not in either the private or public sector. The term ‘third sector’ is often used interchangeably with ‘charity sector’, ‘voluntary sector’ and ‘not-for-profit sector’. Have you ever felt like you’ve got something, or you know something, or have experienced something, that could help other people? Whatever your story is, your own set of skills and experiences, combined with the challenges and struggles you’ve faced, give you a perspective that is unique. In this video, I'm talking about the importance of sharing what you know. If you never share what you know, then you're not going to be able to help others. When it comes to learning and growing, there's no better way to do it than by sharing your experiences and knowledge with other people. By sharing what you know, you'll be able to help others achieve their goals and dreams. So, what are you waiting for? Share what you know with the world!
