In this episode I got to have a truly delightful conversation with educator, storyteller, and instructional designer Donnalie Jamnah (DJ) about why fanfic is important to authors and readers alike. Listen in on the lively conversation I had with podcast host Latisha Jones, as we discussed our fanfiction and fandom journeys that got us to where we are today before diving into a fun recounting of one of my favorite coffee shop AUs. In this general release we discuss Tales of Magic by amithia, a BBC Merlin fic available on AO3 that is one of my favorites. There is an extended cut of this episode on my patreon that includes an additional Good Omens fic, as well as extended conversation about community and the importance of platonic relationships and their reflection in media and fanfic. In a divergence from my usual format, I hold a conversation with Jessie Blount and Lark Malakai, the producers of The Gayly Prophet, EsGAYpe from Reality, and We are the Gayers at Hashtag Ruthless Productions, about their experiences with fanfiction as well as the importantance of trans and queer representation in media and the important role that fanfiction plays in providing that representation. We also discuss the ability of fanfiction to fill gaps and transform works that have come from problematic sources, particularly Harry Potter, and the importance in firing JK Rowling/ finding ways to ethically engage with Harry Potter while denying her profits under our capitalist society. This episode is slightly longer than usual, but the conversation is important. If you'd like to listen to the ad-free extended cut (which was released two days early), join my Patreon today! Herein we discuss Thasmin, the ridiculousness of certain fanfics and tropes, call out lack of canonical character development, and relish in the opportunities of fanfiction for expanding on character and picking up plot threads. The additional fanfic mentioned in the episode is Corona Australis, also by Flyorine. Both of them can be found on Ao3.
