On the morning of October 3rd, 2021, investigators combing through the charred remains of a Colorado home uncovered the burned body of a man. But it wasn’t the fire that killed him. He had been stabbed in the neck multiple times, murdered before the flames were ever set. When two suspects were taken into custody, their conflicting stories and contradicting details only deepened the mystery of what really happened that night…

Extreme acts of violence rarely happen without warning. There’s often a long, troubling pattern leading up to them. When intervention fails, the consequences can be devastating. Late in the evening on September 3rd, 2022, 41-year-old Mark Bent was sitting in his truck, drinking a homemade concoction of hard liquor and an energy drink, contemplating a big decision. Over the last year, Mark had found himself as the center of some drama in his new home state of Idaho. What started as a rumor escalated into harassment, which in turn made Mark’s life a living hell. It was only after Mark conveniently found himself outside the home of 23-year-old Nikolas Bird, the very man he held responsible for starting the rumors, that he decided to take matters into his own hands…

When Payment Solutions CEO Geoffrey Biddle was found murdered in his own home, those who knew him were shocked. He had meaningful relationships with his friends, family, and employees, with no known enemies. He was the kind of man who was happy to lend a hand to a neighbor in need. But as investigators dug deeper, they uncovered a trail of fraud, deception, and premeditation leading them straight to jaded ex-employee, Billy Phillips. Stolen checks, suspicious internet searches and a mountain of evidence painted a dark picture of a murderous crime driven by pure greed.

Most of us trust that our legal system will deliver the right judgments and hold those who commit heinous crimes accountable. That trust extends to the support we expect to follow — the assumption that resources will be available after an unexpected tragedy. But the unfortunate truth is that not everyone is afforded these privileges, making the path to recovery and closure all the more complicated for survivors of violent crime who are left to pick up the pieces on their own. For the family of 70-year-old David Flaget, that journey was filled with obstacles. They were ultimately forced to take matters into their own hands in seeking justice after their beloved grandfather was murdered in a situation that was entirely preventable.

In 2016, police in Columbus, Ohio, were dispatched to a homeless encampment known as a "tent city" near the Scioto River. Upon arrival, they discovered a gruesome crime scene—the brutal murder of a camp resident, Cathleen Howatt. Her death set off a complex and tragic investigation, drawing in law enforcement, as well as Cathleen’s loved ones, into a web of conflicting accounts, substance abuse, and the harsh realities of life on the streets of Columbus. As authorities closed in on Cathleen’s killer, tensions escalated, leading to a dramatic and intense confrontation between detective and suspect.

In March 2017, a 25-year-old man in Dubuque, Iowa placed a frantic phone call to 911. He claimed his girlfriend had just died in front of him - by stabbing herself in the stomach. The next day, he was arrested and charged with her murder. But was her death a suicide or a homicide? The question would divide a community, send shockwaves through the courts, and pit two families against each other.

On October 23rd, 2022, 21-year-old Jared Dicus and 21-year-old Anggy Diaz posted a photo on Facebook that surprised their friends and family alike. It was a picture of Jared holding Anggy in his arms as they shared a kiss, celebrating the fact that they had just gotten married. This announcement came as a shock to their friends and family for a couple of reasons: first, no one was invited, and second, they had met less than a year ago. However, setting aside judgment, it appeared that the two truly loved each other, and perhaps this was just another story of love at first sight. Yet, despite how good things seemed, something dark was brewing beneath the surface, only to be revealed after a disturbing 911 call was made just a few months later.

When a wealthy businessman and his live-in friend were discovered dead in an upscale Arkansas neighborhood in 2002, the execution-style murders sent ripples across the country. Shortly after, a woman goes missing from her job in Salt Lake City, Utah. What connects these two horrific events is a single man and a lifetime of growing delusions, culminating in a shocking nine-year ordeal of violence and delayed justice.

On the afternoon of March 19th, 2018, residents in Lake Wales, Florida were going about their usual day-to-day business. Adults were just getting off work, kids were returning home from school, and others were finishing up their errands. But, around 3 PM, that all changed when waves of police and paramedics made their way to a neighborhood on the south side of town, surrounding a small field near Caloosa Blvd and Lake Blvd. As public interest grew and residents watched on, they learned that just beyond that field, in a small but dense area of trees, lay the dead body of 15-year-old Giovanni Diaz. As for the suspect, 16-year-old Dillen Murray, he was already in custody, claiming that he had beaten the boy to death in self-defense. It just so happened that the community themselves had far more information than investigators initially realized, helping to piece together the puzzle of how a hang out between friends turned deadly.
***We originally covered this case in an abbreviated “Felony Friday” mini-episode back in 2020. This is a follow-up full length rewrite now that the perpetrator has been sentenced and all investigative reports have been made publicly available.***

Can’t imagine making a facebook post talking about how I want a play-thing for my partner and I.
That's awesome that the family stood by him. But the big problem was that mom was trying to be his friend instead of his parent. Letting him know that those drugs were to lead To her death. sad
is it just me or is there beeping in the background of this episode? I'm listening to it in the car and it's constantly making me think that it's something wrong with my car but when I pause it it stops.
not so sure this was simple cutesy online harassment that a person could just brush off and walk away from. I don't think it should be minimized. However, it is not a justification for first degree murder, and as is usually the case, the distressed dude may have targeted the "wrong" man anyway, in the course of doing something he had no right to do. Really, though, you don't have to MINIMIZE the effects of harassment and bullying in order to point out how wrong premeditated murder is. jeez.
This episode was heartbreaking. As a mother to a son, I have no doubt she would want him to forgive himself and make meaning of his life. However, as also someone who has done a ton of drugs, he left one important point out of his message, some people are not good candidates for any type of drugs and especially psychedelics. I’ve had two friends who both had several drug-induced psychosis episodes and later developed mental illnesses. Know yourself and know your limits.
I had just imbibed (it's legal in my state) before I decided to chill out with the new episode of one of my favorite podcasts. I got snuggled in my bed with my best buddy, a Boxer-bully named Red, and turned on the podcast. I heard the warning and thought, eh how bad can it be? BRO! It was trippppy. If you look at time from the side, it looks like a stack of DVDs, each one playing your life in a different century, a different place simultaneously, and you can bounce. Anyway, thanks. 😁
I love this podcast. great story telling and no hateful political talk. thank you.
this old bastard wanted a woman to be his cash cow and caretaker. her cancer diagnosis probably got him thinking about killing her. she would not be able to work as much and bring in the income to support his vile butt. I do not buy that she was the one getting carried away with the idea of being married and having a grand wedding and all that. I think that was all him, entrapping her in a future of abuse and caretaking. I think Vickie would have loved someone even if the guy weren't rich.
with the p!$$ poor job law enforcement tends to do with missing persons, and the unjustifiable rate of unsolved/un-prosecutable homicides already, I don't think the public should stand for this whole normalizing of the "multiple bullet suicide" trending theory. I am not encouraged at all by how quickly these Law Enforcement in this case were so quick to embrace their "suicide vibes".
omg!!
such a wild story but so much filler
Heartbreaking because as the victim’s granddaughter said it was preventable. They should sue the family in civil court.
"Who's the realest m****f****?!" he exclaimed, while aggressively chugging a Smirnoff Ice Orange.
You leave your drunk friend behind knowing that she wants to hook up with someone you both don't know?
what the actual fuck is wrong with that dispatcher? I hope she was fired immediately. wtf.
The overwhelming majority of the episode is witness testimony and similar. Audio quality varies, though it's generally not too bad. If listening to an hour of testimony is not your thing, I suggest skipping this one.
so so sad 😞
Clifford Burns' range of emotion and inability to control them tend to be a common characteristic in small towns un Upstate NY. It is especially prevalent when subjects are raised in abusive, alcoholic environments. The way everything is blamed on others is a typical characteristic of males who have been victims of domestic abuse, especially in early developmental years.
huh. so it's impossible to murder someone if they are "mentally ill"? they lose their human status? it's also wrong to stigmatize mental illness, unless a mentally ill someone has been killed and their "mental illness" is being used as a mitigating factor, maybe even a justification, for their death at someone else's hands?
it's a shame you can't post this on TikTok. those millennials could find anything. lol
