Quotes [6:32] In Africa, we say that it takes a village to raise a child [12:43] I want to shed light on both the old and new African literature. This way I can create an eco-system where the current youth can access all information in place. [13:31] History, tradition, culture and wisdom is handed down. Sn Introduction. Nancy’s Titbits. Joining us on the show today is Nancy. Originally from Cameroon, Nancy immigrated to Canada in 2015. Nancy can fluently speak English and French, she works as a financial analyst, but she’s very ardent and passionate about reading books. Apart from reading books, Nancy also enjoys dancing, watching movies and cooking. Nancy’s current project Inspired by her niece in the U.S who enjoyed listening to her stories from Africa, Nancy dived into compiling different collections of short stories and different literature from Africa as a way of storing and sharing this information with individuals such as her niece. Nancy was also inspired by her Entrepreneurship course at Riason School through which the idea to publish books was fully realised. Nancy’s research and compilation project, mainly focuses on the socio-cultural aspects of the African society. Some of the main themes you’ll find from her books include; romance, marriage, fantasy and the contemporary African community. Through the books, Nancy is trying to revive the euphoric experience that comes with knowing your African roots and the norms associated with the historic and contemporary African society. Nancy adores and cherishes the proverbs, knowledge and lessons she has gained through listening to the stories as narrated by her grandmother and close kin. Nancy view on Technology’s effect on today’s society Despite technology having numerous negative impacts on the current generation, Nancy believes that a lot of individuals have positively leveraged the power of tools such as filming, writing, and social media as a platform to voice their art and ideas. The pros she says, are way more than the cons. With this in mind, Nancy plans to build a common platform where interested parties can visit and gain access to the thousands of literature masterpieces that have been generated over time by different African scholars and authors. Nancy’s goals. Through her different writing and compilation projects, Nancy hopes to create a culture where the current generation can appreciate the historic and traditional values of the African community. Once this occurs, Nancy feels that the current African community will be able to acknowledge and be grateful for how far we’ve come as a society. [17:45] How to become a leader and stay away from the negativity. [21:45] Karlene’s experience with failure [30:07] Karlene’s book project. A bucked full of mangoes Quotes [4:30] The roles that you hold in society isn’t really who you are. Who you are at the core is the values and believes that you hold dear and developed as your foundation. [12:08] If a person is too insecure to accept certain feedback, they should never be in a position of leadership. Leadership begins with the person, if you cannot lead yourself, you have no right leading others. [13:11] You’re taught certain principles which enhances leadership, but no one can teach you to become a leader. [13:20] We are all leaders in our own right. First and foremost, you’re a leader not over people per say, but a leader over a particular gift or talent. [15:45] Leadership exposes who you are. So if you’re not an authentic person, then leadership isn’t for you. [21:51] Every leader has to go through failure in order to recognize their greatness [22:59] Be humble, ask questions. If you’re unsure of something, never move forward until you get the right answers   Resources Phone no.: 4167048487 Email: karlene@karlenemillwood.com https://www.amazon.com/Bucket-Full-Mangoes-Collection-Stories-ebook/dp/B00HZ4KMIE Joining us on the show today is Karlene Millwood. Born and raised in Jamaica, Karlene came to Canada after her high school graduation. She is currently a life coach, guiding people towards living their best and most authentic life. Karlene has worked in many different careers and has in the process ended up working for a diverse number of companies and organizations.  Karlene’s Jump moment Karlene’s moment of realization and decision to become a life coach occurred in 2015. She was at the top of her career and had just transitioned from one position to another and was now working as a senior manager. It was while working at this corporate job that Karlene finally had enough and decided to speak her mind and heart out on certain issues happening at the company. The company let her go afterwards. And after a lot of thinking, self-reflection and a little divine intervention, Karlene decided to move to Vancouver in 2016, enrolled in an intensive 1-year film school program, and the rest as she says, is history. Potential and leadership. No one came into this world empty. It is up to us to realise and tap into our potential, because that is where our leadership truly begins. Once a person understands who they truly are, that’s when leadership begins. When you realise that you are just as valuable and significant as any other human being, and you have something to offer this world, then no one can ever be able to make you feel insecure about anything again. And, once you get to that place of confidence, then you start leading yourself in the right way. You bring success into your life, you attract the right people and even opportunities. Thus, leadership sprouts from a personal level, and from that level, is when people begin to see something of value in you and they want to know how you accomplished that, and that’s where the followership comes from. It’s for this reason that Karlene teaches personal leadership, and how individuals can improve on it and take it to another level.
With full focus on his show business, people started approaching Roger for help with marketing of their different shows and events. And that marked the genesis of 404 Media group, A PR company that Roger started with his wife. How Byblacks.com was started Roger lives his life alongside the strong philosophy of buying from fellow Black Canadian or visible minority owned businesses in order to empower and improve each other, both economically and socially. And after 18 months of research and planning, Roger undertook the creation of a directory for black owned businesses, which later on grew to become the giant online magazine media house that it is today. Along the way, he’s faced a lot of obstacles and challenges in form of negative reviews and criticisms, all of which Roger is thankful for, since it only helped him get better at his projects and life as a whole. And from that day, Roger began his hunt for a new career in the sales and marketing niche.

It was all really more about the implementation, and even further than that, it was about my believe system, which held it all together. [13:58] For those of you who are listening, and have a big dream, and you wanna go to the next level. You, most times, have to find a way to fund that dream yourself. [26:54] Failure is only success in progress [29:00] A lot of us think that the learning is the doing. But in reality, the doing is the learning. If you never start doing, you’ll never start learning what you need in order to be successful, and so many of us, are usually stuck in this procrastination. Resources Email: Tyee@Tyeemiles.com Telephone: 2055388936   Welcome back everyone, thanks a lot for tuning in and being a part of the Jump Podcast. Today, we have ourselves a really awesome guest that I’ve been trying to get on the show for quite a while. So, without further ado, joining us on the show is Tyeshia Miles. Tye’s background, jump and rise to success Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Tye is the 3rd born in a family of 4 girls. Getting pregnant at a tender age of 15 years set Tye up for a life of ambition, hustle and struggle. She worked at McDonalds before joining college for 2-year degree in Cosmetology and setting up her own hair stylist services under a local salon. This was Tye’s first Jump. She struggled with her services when starting up, and ran on nothing but faith and hope to secure customers and new clients. Thus, her first 6 months were mostly dependent on the luck and prayer that things would get better. This however, all took a turn for the best when Tye took it upon herself to read marketing books and implement on the strategies, and in a span of 7 months, her business began raking in 6 figures! Moving out and Growing bigger. When her business grew, so did her reputation. Tye had big standards to uphold for both her regular clients and new customers. She requested the Salon manager to implement a few changes for her business sake. This caused a rift between the two and that is when Tye knew she had to move out, establish and keep growing her brand, business, and services. In the next couple of months, Tye saved over 40,000 USD, which enabled her to get a loft in downtown Birmingham and start getting into business by herself. Why are we always so hesitant to make our jump? Uncertainty. Uncertainty scares the hell out of people, since they don’t know what to expect. At the core, though, trusting and believing in yourself and what you do can easily fix this. The naysayers and sceptics will most probably always be there to scare and cower you from reaching for your dreams. And, sometimes, this could be our close friends, family or partners. But, for you to get to where you want, you will have to block them out of your thoughts and plans for the sake of your business and personal growth and success. Because, the truth of the matter is, when you’re ready to make that jump, you can only take yourself so far, and have to allow yourself to be supported. This is specifically a hard thing, especially when you’re so used to standing on your own. Thus, you need to find a way to get the right support to help you build and grow your dream and business.
Today's show was sponsored by www.Alitu.com use code JUMP QUOTES [18:55] Leadership comes down to our ability to influence people to perform, participate and get engaged. [23:30] If a leader presents himself or herself as being friendly, approachable and confident, people will follow.   Joining us in the Studio today is Kevin Johnson of the Johnson Leadership Group. They are passionate about training, coaching, equipping and mentoring the next generation of leaders. So, if you’re interested in leadership or think you have what it takes to be a leader, well then seat back, relax and enjoy the show. Kevin comes from Richmond, Virginia. He went to high school in the same district, Armstrong high school. He pursued his undergraduate degree in Virginia Commonwealth University. Kevin spent his 34-year career in serving in the department of defence, treasury. Having just recently retired, Kevin has dedicated his time, effort and passion in helping individuals and organizations prepare their front-level, mid-level and senior-level leaders to be great leaders. Why the next Generation? The baby-boom generation as Kevin calls it, is his generation. The generation composed of Kevin’s peers and individuals who have either retired or resigned in the past 3 – 4 years. Most of these retirees left behind a workforce that wasn’t fully equipped and trained to take over the great responsibility of leadership. Some, and even most of the individuals in the current workforce can carry out basic and even complex management tasks, it’s the leadership part that they lack. Because there’s a great difference between leadership and management. And, as we move forward in time, more and more individuals, organizations and companies are recognizing the need for leadership as a skill. The training, as we’ve noticed, results to more positivity, engagement, inspiration, motivation and ultimately better organizations. Kevin’s personal experience with leadership Leadership is something that’s engrained in Kevin’s DNA. Starting off as a young boy, Kevin was tasked with the responsibility of taking care of his younger brother who was mentally disabled. Long after he was married, Kevin had a kid with autism, a challenge he readily and happily took up in looking after the kid. Kevin, alongside his wife also run a ministry. A position that he got to after serving as a church leadership deacon. The different life situations and obstacles that Kevin found himself in, he used as opportunities of learning not just how to lead, but also to serve. Our Consistency in influencing people depends on; Integrity. If we maintain and sustain our integrity as leaders, then it becomes really easy to influence people to participate and get engaged in their duties and responsibilities. Nurturing. Giving people an environment and atmosphere conducive for their development and accepting the challenging assignments, knowing that we are there to give a lending hand. Faith. Demonstrating that you have faith in people and trusting them to get the job done. Understanding people. Understanding the people that you lead. What makes them tick? What do they like and dislike? What are some of the skills and abilities and knowledge that they have to be a great contributor to the team? Olga migrated to Israel from her homeland Russia when she was only 14 years old. She lived and stayed in Israel, where after she graduated, got an I.T job as a programmer and worked alongside her husband (who was also into I.T) In 2005, Olga moved to Canada with her husband. Inspired by Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad, Poor Dad (a book she defines as the bible for business). Olga opened a bridal boutique only 2 months after moving to Canada. The business took quite sometime to pick up. And, after 3 years of consistency and effort, it finally sprout, leading Olga and her husband to open 3 more stores. Olga has hired different professionals to effectively run her stores, her only job she says, is to keep track on how good the business is doing, and passively earn her income. Real Estate Investment. After being inspired so much by Robert Kiyosaki’s philosophy, Olga and her husband decided to venture into the Real Estate world. They found a mentor who was willing and able to guide them through the Real Estate world, and immediately started investing in different portfolios (this was way back in 2010). Through this investment, Olga was able to reach her life’s dream of early retirement. And, now at only age 40, she has multiple streams of income and total financial freedom. Mentorship Olga has her entire lifestyle and philosophy built around mentorship. She believes that mentors play the greatest role in helping individuals achieve the most desired outcome. Being a product of mentorship herself, Olga frequently searched for individuals online through Facebook and offers her help to the ones interested in business and real estate investment. But it doesn’t just stop there. Because life is an endless ocean of learning, Olga also uses Facebook to search for individuals she believes can mentor her to reach even greater heights than she is right now. Olga’s huge business tip Create a system with whatever you do. If it’s systematised, it’s so much easier to navigate, control and expand.

[35:39] Go in there, speak your voice, and don’t be afraid to speak out, especially for your child. Welcome to the jump podcast. Where we’re all about bringing interesting people on the show and having them tell us how they jumped into action, how they tried something different. Joining us on the show today, is Ryan and Shakira. My good friend Ryan runs a ‘hub’, The Afro-Caribbean business network, where he’s a co-founder. They work with entrepreneurs of Afro-Caribbean heritage and help them with their business ideas, strategy, implementation and growth. Ryan has tagged a student of his and entrepreneur Shakira Rouse. Shakira won the ACBN first ever grand competition with her Special Compass idea, which is an education service focused on helping students with learning disabilities and special needs. Shakira joined the competition to put herself out there. She’s always threw herself out there whenever an opportunity comes, and always takes the ‘No’ as progress and growth towards her entrepreneurial journey.  The program that Shakira runs is particularly interesting and dear to me, since I also experienced the same problem whilst growing up in school. Were it not for one particular teacher, Mr. Livingstone, who decided to approach my situation in a different way, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today. The Special focus campaign. Shakira started the special focus program because of her own personal experience. She was diagnosed with hyper learning disability when she was just at grade 2. So needless to say, it’s been a long and tough school journey for her. She struggled in all the ways she could, she worked really hard, put in the extra effort and talked to professors, but it all never seemed to help. She confided in a friend who also had a similar problem and found out she could get help on campus with her learning problem. She signed up and got the help she needed and eventually graduated with a degree in Spanish. Once she graduated, she went back and started on another undergraduate degree programme in French.
