Description

Jazz Matters is a not-for-profit hobby project that I’m extremely proud of.

It began life in May 2021 as NuDirections, a weekly radio show on a London community station. That spirit of discovery still runs through everything I do.

But today, Jazz Matters has evolved into a global podcast platform for Jazz and World music lovers — reaching over 40,000 open-minded listeners across 57 countries on more than 24 platforms.2025/6 marks a new era. My love of music has always gone beyond Jazz, so I’ve created two distinct but connected spaces here

Jazz Matters: Podcasts, Playlists and Music Videos.

Jazz Lines: Blogs, Interviews, Gallery & Pulse for Who's Shaping the Scene.

I’m also preparing a full digital relaunch from my new studio, from 1st May 2026, then every Jazz Matters podcast, mix, and special will stream exclusively from my website—no third-party platforms and no algorithms. Until then, you can listen here and on 24+ podcast platforms.

Alongside the music, you’ll find in Jazz Lines, my platform for blogs, interviews, gallery, and pulse that links to things that catch my ear and eye. A bold new chapter begins soon. New location. New music player. New studio.

Jazz Matters. Because the music — and everything around it — truly does.

Enjoy the music I love

Welcome to Mestizo Sounds. The new programme is called Party of My Mind. My new music selection looks at the world from a darker perspective. For that purpose, I have used more rock music than I usually use in my mixes. The rock of the post-punk scene fits perfectly with this view. Post-punk was a very inspiring period of musical creativity and crossing boundaries that still has repercussions today. You will find a Playlist and information in the info button and in the blog with more details on the tracks selected. I hope you enjoy listening. As May draws to a close, life is in motion. My house is on the market, boxes are piling up, and I've been scouting new places with room for a proper studio. My new mix for May 2025 is titled "Evolution to Rescue." While this name may seem random at first, it has a thoughtful origin. I spent a few days listening to the beautiful track "Evolution" by the Cinematic Orchestra, featuring the soulful singer Fontella Bass, who is known for her hit "Rescue Me." This connection inspired the mix's name. As you can see, it may be a bit random, but it carries significant meaning. We are living in times of change, and evolution can take various paths. I hope that this evolution leads to the rescue of all living beings, including humans and what we are good at—our creativity! The latest selection explores various genres and musical moods. As a mix, Boxes, Memories & Hidden Grooves flows like a journal entry, contemplative in places, ecstatic in others, and filled with the kind of sonic texture you can only get when memory meets music. There’s a gentle polarity here, between worldliness and intimacy, structure and space. The mix leans toward jazz fusion, spiritual jazz, and global jazz but it’s more about vibe than genre. Think forgotten fusion from Scandinavia, cinematic jazz-rock from Indonesia, soulful beat-led explorations, and the kind of live recordings that put you in the room. Whether you’re packing, unpacking, or just taking stock of the music that’s shaped you, this hour is designed to move with you. This week, I have a playlist for you that stretches across continents and moods, a rich tapestry of sound that celebrates both discovery and the familiar warmth of timeless artistry. I open with a gem from Russia — "Case" by the Ilugdin Trio, a striking piece that caught me completely off guard in the best way. Dmitry Ilugdin and his trio lay down something deeply melodic, harmonically rich, and full of understated elegance. A real find. Next, I tip my hat to one of my all-time favourite voices in jazz, the ever-cool Patricia Barber. Her track "This Town" is a reminder of why she remains a singular force — cerebral, sultry, and effortlessly hip. Further into the mix, you’ll find some fresh and fiery ensemble work from Clélya Abraham and company, the hypnotic grooves of Sean Khan with jazz legend Peter King and the luminous Heidi Vogel, and a cinematic journey courtesy of the Espen Berg Trio, joined by the haunting trumpet of Mathias Eick on "Vintermørke." And then there's "Eberhard" — a poignant, sprawling tribute by the late, great Lyle Mays. For those who, like me, hold the Pat Metheny Group close to the heart, this is a moving reminder of Lyle’s genius. His musical voice was — and remains — one of the most emotionally intelligent in modern jazz. I close with some adventurous sounds: the genre-bending "El Momento" by Sly5thAve & Roberto Verastegui, the dreamy textures of Rahill’s "Futbol," and an experimental nugget from Drift Lab that plays like a sonic science project in the best sense. This playlist is full of surprises, beauty, groove, and soul — the kind of mix that makes you feel like the world’s a little more connected through sound. So wherever you're tuning in — just press play and let the music take you. Thanks for listening. Welcome to Jazz Matters. Life is a little hectic right now—I'm in the middle of relocating and selling my home. If all goes to plan, a new home and studio should be ready by June or July. Until then, regular shows won't be possible, but I’ll put together the occasional mix when time allows. This session is filled with music rediscovered while packing—a collection of gems that had slipped to the back of my mind. It’s been a joy to reconnect with these tracks, and I hope you enjoy this March selection as much as I have. In my African Latin Music mix, I will lean heavily on an outstanding musician from this music genre, Pape Fall. He blew my ears apart when I first heard his music and his name resonates deeply within the world of African and Latin music. Pape Fall is a Senegalese musician, singer, and saxophonist, Fall has spent decades crafting a unique blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms with traditional Senegalese melodies with Latin influences. As the founder of the renowned band African Salsa, he has left an indelible mark on the global music scene, carrying the rich musical traditions of his homeland onto international stages. As the founder of African Salsa, he has brought his vibrant sound to audiences worldwide, blending the rich musical traditions of Senegal with Latin influences. A Journey Through Music Born in Dakar in 1947, Fall began his musical career in 1966 with Dakar Rhythm before joining the legendary Star Band in the 1970s. In 1976, he formed African Salsa, a group that quickly gained popularity for its infectious energy and innovative fusion of styles. Their first major international release, Artisanat, showcased Fall’s exceptional talent on the saxophone and vocals, earning him recognition as a pioneer of African salsa. Beyond African Salsa, Fall played a key role in other influential groups, including Nder de Dakar and Kassé Star. His career has spanned over 20 albums and extensive tours across Africa, Europe, and the U.S., spreading the rhythms of African salsa to global audiences. The Sound of African Salsa Fall’s music is a masterful blend of Senegalese mbalax and Cuban salsa, featuring intricate percussion, dynamic brass sections, and rhythmic complexity. His lyrics, sung in Wolof and French, explore themes of love, culture, and social issues, resonating with fans across generations. A Lasting Legacy With a career spanning nearly six decades, Pape Fall remains a celebrated figure in African music. His contributions continue to inspire musicians and preserve the legacy of African salsa, ensuring its influence endures for years to come.  Info Website - www.jazzmattersuk.com Supporting Blog - https://www.jazzmattersuk.com/blogs/jazz-matters-digs-african-latin For all social media links and more visit my Linkhub. https://www.jazzmattersuk.com/linkhub Jazz Matters Info - https://www.jazzmattersuk.com/about Email - jazzmattersuk@mail.com Info about me - https://www.jazzmattersuk.com/introducing-jazz-matters/introducing-ray #OnDemand #FreeToStream https://pod.co/nudirections  Stream in and enjoy the Music I love. The new programme by Mestizo Sounds focuses on folk music, mainly sixties and seventies. The idea for this programme is due to the new feature film “A Complete Unknown” about Bob Dylan's early days until he abandons the folk structures. The Folk scene was the catalyst for the most brilliant composers in the music revolution of the sixties. I hope the listener appreciates the selected music and agrees that Folk Music Matters! Soon, a new programme featuring more contemporary folk music will follow. Jazz Matters Mix

2025-02-0501:18:00

Hi all – sorry I’m a bit late this month. I’ve been caught up in a whirlwind of change lately. I’ve decided to sell my home and relocate, and let me tell you, the nightmare has already begun! First, I need to get my place ready to sell, and then comes the daunting task of packing up my music and belongings, all while trying to find a new home. It’s a lot, but I’m pushing through. On the bright side, a close friend of mine who’s a builder has generously offered to help create and fit out my new studio once I move. So, there’s some fun to look forward to amidst the chaos! Until I’m settled into my new space and studio, I’ll be putting out mixes instead of full shows. This mix, for example, came together as I started sorting through my music collection in preparation for packing. And let me tell you, I stumbled on some absolutely beautiful gems that I’m excited for you to hear. I’m also experimenting with making the mixes closer to 2 hours long instead of the usual 1 hour. Depending on your feedback, I might keep them around this length going forward. Thanks for sticking with me through this transition. I hope you enjoy the mix, and I’ll keep you updated as things progress.   Info Website - www.jazzmattersuk.com A blog supporting this Mix - https://www.jazzmattersuk.com/blogs/a-sonic-journey-through-modern-jazz-a-playlist-exploration For all social media links and more visit my Linkhub. https://www.jazzmattersuk.com/linkhub Jazz Matters Info - https://www.jazzmattersuk.com/about Email - jazzmattersuk@mail.com Info about me - https://www.jazzmattersuk.com/introducing-jazz-matters/introducing-ray #OnDemand #FreeToStream https://pod.co/nudirections  Please enjoy the music I love Jazz Matters    Playlist Dan Berglund, Magnus Öström, Esbjörn Svensson, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra - Seven Days of Falling GoGo Penguin - Initiate (Live) Paolo Fresu & Omar Sosa - La Llamada Rare Silk – Storm Kenny Garrett - It's Time to Come Home Morgan Guerin - With A Piece of Mind Pt.1 & Pt.2 Takuya Kuroda – Thirteen Shatter Hands – Exhausted Rescue Squad Daniel Freedman – Codex Emil Brandqvist Trio - The Clouds Are Clearing Pat Metheny - Come and See

In this episode, I will embark on a vibrant musical journey through the soul-stirring rhythms, grooves, and melodies of Brazil.  My Moments of 2024 is a selection of songs that have created special musical marks. 3 groups of artists have a very significant input this year. Fontaines DC, Kutiman and Ezra Collective have been my favourite artists for 2024. I have not only included music from this current year as it is not the music made in one specific year the only one we pay attention and my criteria for this compilation of great tunes is what music has stopped me in my tracks and made an impact on me as a listener. Moments 2024 is definitely not background music. The final song is an astonishing cover of the 1970s hit "Why Can't We Live Together" with a beautiful chorus of female singers chanting No More Wars, No More Wars. It makes a suitable final to a year of human tragedies inflicted through conflict finishes. You can say louder but never so beautifully stated. I hope the listener to Mestizo Sounds appreciate and enjoy Moments 2024.
