We are taking a break from our usual Covid coverage to talk about the other big story for 2020, the upcoming election. We wanted to make sure we understand how voting will look and feel this year given everything going on, so we are bringing on an expert. We are delighted to be joined by Carol Harvey, Chair of the League of Women Voters for Somerset and Hunterdon Counties. Carol talks about the process of mail-in voting, getting your ballot, dropping it off, ensuring that you follow the procedures so that it's counted, and what to do if you run into any issues whatsoever. You can find more resource from the League of Women Voters at https://www.lwvnj.org/You can also check with the state's 2020 voting portal at - https://www.nj.gov/state/elections/vote.shtmlThere you can ensure you are registered, instructions for voting, locations to drop-off your ballot, or vote in person if you choose, and how to track your vote. No sides are taken, we just want to make sure all votes are count and all voices are heard. The good news for New Jersey is that the transmission rate is still relatively low. However, in one demographic group, 19-24 year olds, transmission rate is 3x as high, suggesting that going back to school is leading to spikes in Covid-19 cases across the Garden State. That being said, Big10 football will happen, which means Rutgers University will have the chance to play. And some YouTube influencers throw a party at the Jersey Shore where 1,500 people show up, and 8 are arrested. Some great news for the Garden State as we shift well into Stage 3 of Coronavirus Reopening. That means indoor dining, gyms opening up, and even the chance to return to the movies. Of course, there are still a lot of questions about schools across the state and concerns on how these changes will impact, especially with the holiday weekend. And it seems the transmission rate is ticking up a bit, so we'll see how long these last. But there's some more hope as researchers in Tennessee crunch Covid data through the world's second fastest supercomputer and find some pretty compelling results. With luck and time we may just be able to get a real handle on this. And stay tuned for an interview with a rep from America Works New Jersey coming up early next week after the long holiday. On today's show, Patrice and Mathew explore the current state of school reopenings in a Covid world. The Governor has made a big push to bridge the digital divide, the NJEA is pushing back on current reopening guidelines, and all of this as the infection rate among kids sends troubling signals. We also look at what reopening means for parents with younger kids and daycare, and how there appears to be no easy solution to any of these questions. Restaurants continue to plan for a return to indoor dining, but as of this recording, it is still a “planning” exercise. Some have been able to take advantage of outdoor space to set up tables and service, but others are still relying solely on take-out and delivery. Patrice Sikora went back to Passaic County to check in with Steve Kostadam who owns and manages the Falls Kitchen in Little Falls. The last time he spoke with Jersey Jobs and Biz was in April. Since then prices have risen for food and the paper supplies needed for take-out and he tapped his savings to help pay rent. He says he is ready to open as soon as the governor gives the OKYou can reach Steve at TheFallsKitchen@gmail.com.If you have a story to share please fill out the contact form at JerseyJobsAndBiz.com or you can email us directly at info@jerseyjobsandbiz.com.
A tale of good news/bad news for the Garden State on the Covid front. On one hand, we seem to be one of two places doing well to contain the virus. On the other hand, a new report from Covid Act Now suggests, we may be seeing a mutated, more troublesome version in our region. Due to growing concerns of the virus across the country in the wake of reopening, New Jersey backtracked on indoor dining. And scenes at the Jersey shore are not encouraging. And we talk about using pools, why some can't reopen, and what to expect if you are heading to one that can.
