Jocko has a reach I don't know he could possibly ever have imagined. I am a surgeon in Brazil of Italian-Brazilian double citizenship family and English is my 3rd language. However, this podcast has been a life changing experience for me. In a complete unexpected turn, I, a true librarian, a book hoarder and library worm, have to, at each episode I listen to, buy a book I incredibly hadn't known about, including Extreme Ownership by Jocko himself.

OK, while I loves me some Jocko-splaining, I need to quibble with one point around the 14th minute. When Liddell-Hart writes "lines of communication", he's not just saying "how people talk". In a strategic context, your lines of communication are the physical logistics paths by which you re-provision and reinforce units. So cutting a line of communication means they can't get ammo, food, fuel, etc.

Regarding letting go of your children and giving them autonomy: it's hard but you have to do it. The internet didn't expose more crime, it made the crime that was already happening seem closer to home. Take Japan for example, it is safe for kids to take the train because it's just a part of society already, they're socially collective/collaborative. It's when society deems each other individual to be unsafe that makes it bad. America has too many antisocial "independent" tendencies, and therefore it encourages people to do what they feel like without considering the greater good.
